Wedding Rings

The traditional wedding ring always used to be gold, silver or platinum. But now there is a new metal on the market - paladium.

When choosing your wedding rings, platinum or white gold are generally the obvious choices. A lesser-known precious metal called palladium seems to gaining popularity, however.

With over three quarters of the world’s palladium produced in Russia and South Africa, it is a scarce metal and is proving more and more popular in the engagement and wedding ring market. Weighing around 50% less than platinum, it is a far more cost effective solution whilst maintaining a white finish.

“Palladium is fast becoming very popular since the metal is naturally white and wear-resistant,” says Mark Johnson, master jeweller and MD of Serendipity Diamonds. “The metal is also hypoallergenic and nickel free, making it perfect for those with allergic reactions or sensitive skin.”

But Mark feels the best reason to buy a palladium engagement or wedding ring is the price. “A ring costs considerably less than both 18 carat gold and platinum, whilst keeping in the same quality range.” With prices starting from just £325 including insured delivery, it’s only a matter of time before palladium becomes a household name.
