Good health and natural beauty go hand in hand. The link between one’s health and looks becomes more apparent with the passing of years. 40+ beauty is based on taking good care of yourself: eating healthy foods, drinking lots of water, wearing sunblock and taking care to go to the doctor for regular physicals, mammograms, etc. More than ever, beauty at this time of your life is based about yourself.

It is a fact of life that as you get older, you lose colour in your lips and your face. Gravity takes its toll on your face and your body. Exercise is one one sure way to bring colour into your face and make you feel and look your youngest.

If you live in a warm climate, try not to spend too long in the sun. A leathery appearance is ageing and never attractive. If you like a tanned look, learn to use bronzing powder instead. Be sure to wear sunblock on chest and hands too.

Blending – Be extra careful to blend foundation up into your hairline and down over your jawbone. Find the sunniest spot in your home to double-check your make-up; using a hand mirror, make sure your make-up is well blended. Wear your glasses when applying make-up. Make a point of checking that your foundation is a perfect match to your skin every six months or so. The most careful blending will not fix the wrong colour foundation.

Make-up for dry skin – Use a moisturizer that isn’t too greasy but that hydrates skin well. Wear moisturizing foundation, (with yellow undertones) and make sure your powder is silky and light. Wear cream eye-shadows, creamy lipsticks and cream blushes. The trick is to apply cream blush just after foundation, then dust on face powder. Apply a pop of powder blush on top.

Lipstick feathering – To avoid feathering: Line your mouth with a lip pencil or apply powder over foundation and just above lip line to prevent colour from running.

Glasses – Always define your eyebrows with a brown-toned shadow so that your eyebrow, rather than the glasses frames, is defining your face. (If your glasses are a bold colour, focus on a great complimenting lipstick colour).
