Cheap Wedding Insurance: Is it precautionary measure, or a waste of time? We speak to the experts at Dreamsaver Insurance to get the low down on covering your big day...

Last month The Evening Gazette reported the closure of popular North Eastern venue Pinchinthorpe Hall Country House Hotel. As news of the hotel’s collapse emerged, many couples were left both disappointed and concerned as their intended wedding venue announced that it had ceased trading.

Once an award-winning establishment, a spokesman from Pinchinthorpe Hall blamed the recession for the hotel’s collapse.

Guisborough bride-to-be Abigail Webster and her 28-year-old fiancé Simon Hadfield were amongst the couples left in the lurch following news that the venue had subsided.

“I’m really, really stressed. I can’t sleep at the moment because I’m thinking, going through all these different options in my head” said Abigail, who booked the country hotel last January for August 6 this year.

Although Pinchinthorpe have assured customers that refunds have been arranged for deposits on weddings and other functions, not all couples let down in the run up to their big day fare so well if they've failed to take out cheap wedding insurance...

With an increasing number of bride-to-be’s spending upwards of £10,000 on their weddings, I’m sure many of you will all agree that the cost of insuring your big day is a small price to pay in a bid to prevent marital mayhem!

It’s extremely common for couples to be fretting about finances in the run up to tying the knot, and let’s face it — cheap wedding insurance is one of those things that if everything goes to plan, it’ll feel like a waste of money, but if things go horribly wrong and you’re left out of pocket, you’d seriously regret not considering it!

Our exclusive UKbride poll revealed that 42% of our members have taken out, or plan to take out, an insurance policy prior to their wedding day. Whilst 11% said they wouldn’t even consider it — deeming it a waste of money and completely unnecessary — 47% of brides-to-be who answered our poll sat on the fence and said that they’ve considered cheap wedding insurance, but think that the decision is ultimately dependent on the total spend of a wedding.

We spoke to the experts at Dreamsaver wedding insurance, who offered their guidance on why couple’s planning to tie the knot should think about taking pre-nuptial precautions...

“All wedding insurance providers have slightly different cover levels so when comparing policies make the time to read the policy wording to check that it is suitable for you needs, rather than just comparing on price and assuming the cover levels are the same,” said Adam Underhill at Dreamsaver.

“Anything expensive that you can’t afford to replace regardless of what it is should be insured to protect you from financial loss — a wedding is no exception,” he added.

“Think about all the people who are involved in the weddings, in terms of services you rely on — any one of those could go wrong.”

“In which case, could you afford to have them replaced at short-notice? What happens if a company goes bust before your wedding date?”

In addition, proportionally, funding a cheap wedding insurance policy would only constitute a fraction of most bride-to-be’s budgets, a point on which Adam expanded;  “Wedding insurance is incredibly cheap when compared to the overall cost of a wedding — something like 0.3% of the total cost.”

One factor to bear in mind when considering cheap wedding insurance however, is that policies do not cover disinclination to marry or getting cold feet; “No wedding insurance policy covers this,” said Adam.

The three most prominent issues to consider for wedding insurance include cancellation cover, re-arrangement cover, and financial failure of wedding suppliers.

“Financial Failure of wedding suppliers is very important with the current financial climate and covers costs if a wedding supplier goes bankrupt,” said Adam.

“This cover will usually only start after a period of time to discourage people taking out a policy, when they know a company is in financial difficulty. Make sure you know what this time period is,” urged Adam.

Cheap wedding insurance can protect against a range of unfortunate events, but asking yourself the question 'is it worth taking it out?' is ultimately dependant upon the cost of your wedding and your fear of things going wrong. Whilst it cannot magically solve any discrepancies, it does provide financial support if any suppliers or services let you down.

Our advice; don't put yourself in a vulnerable situation where you will end up paying the price for events beyond your control. At the end of the day, cheap wedding insurance is merely valuable for peace of mind, enabling you to feel relaxed and comfortable enough to enjoy your day.
