Hey so finally engaged after 10 years ???????? but I can't believe how expensive weddings are ???? I want something more than just a registry office and then a meal somewhere (absolutely nothing wrong with this, it's just not us!) Also don't want a church wedding lol, we're in Scotland and I've been looking at some lovely hotels but they come with some not so lovely price tags ????. I should say we are also in the process of applying for emigration to Australia which once all done is going to have cost us close to £10k ???? so I really can't afford £6k+ on venue packages ????. We want to get married before we emigrate, and as it'll be the last time for a long long time that we'll have all our families together I do want it to be a lil special. Has anyone any ideas on how I can search for cheaper options. Google is being no help at all ???????? x

Not sure where in Scotland you are, but we're getting married at maybe house hotel near Dumfries, they don't charge for venue hire, so you only pay for your food/drink and obviously person to marry you. And you get the function rooms to yourself. X

I downloaded the app bridebook and it's really good, I've found planning my wedding that you need to negotiate prices (most places have wiggle room in prices they rather be in use then have nothing booked) x

Look at Best Western hotels. We got married in one that really didn't look like a budget hotel (Scores) and the wedding package now is actually cheaper than it was when we got married in 2015.

UKbride Administrator

Have you considered a simple registry office for the legal part of marriage. Then you could have a blessing ceremony anywhere that respect your tastes. X

A weekday wedding is always cheaper and probably going for a month that's not so popular, I.e maybe October. Also wjen looking at photography, make up/hair contact a local college to see if a student wants experience. Also as for dresses look at preloved/ ex sample so muxh cheaper but just as beautiful. Make your own flowers with artificial I made mine and 3 bridesmaid and 20 button holes for about 30 pound. Hope soem of this helps xx

could you hire a nice golf club or something to host a "leaving party"? As soon as you say the W word prices magically seem to increase so if you can have a wedding in a registry office then take the party over to the reception

Where are you in Scotland? I married 2 years ago in Aberdeenshire, meldrum House and the venue package was no where near 6k. Obviously once you start adding things on then it creeps up but you have control over that. Also look at mid week weddings, venues are cheaper, often photographers etc will do you deals as well if it's not a Saturday

We got engaged after 13yrs together, married after 14yrs! We have 2kids& couldn't justify a big wedding bill. We found a lovely manor house that did everything...ceremony & reception so we just had to get the registrar. We got married on a weds as it was a lot cheaper, ceremony was later in the day (4.00) so we only had to feed people once! I had a paper bouquet, bridesmaid/flower girls had wands & I decorated jam jars & grew our own sweet peas to fill them instead of flowers/florist. Fb pages & ebay for finishing touches. Whole thing, everything except honeymoon cost £5.5k.

Katharine O'Connor

Have a look at the time of year- a lot of venues have great deals for winter weddings and also the day of the week. I have also noticed on things like Wowcher and Groupon there have been wedding packages but obviously check out all of the information/terms first x

If you sign up to various sites like UK Bride, Confetti etc. they often have venues offering lats minute packages etc. at bargain prices so that could be an option if you're on a bit of a deadline? The venues would rather have some money than none so you can often get them at a fraction of the advertised price :-)

Groupon have good deals but think about what you want. For us we didnt want the wedding breakfast so have opted for a later service and hot evening buffet. It saved us thousands x

My wedding only cost us just over 2k for the lot I started to get bits early on My dress was bought December 2012 (we married in November 2014) and only cost me £60 £60 to have it altered to fit so if you get a few bits when you can it not to bad a lot of my stuff I got off eBay good luck with it all

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 16 Aug 2017

Have a consider to when you fix your date- day if the week and time if year can reduce (or increase!) the price by loads!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 16 Aug 2017

We're doing registry office. But then have a beautiful venue for afterwards for the whole day and night that's worked on a minimum spend. So we only had to put £100 deposit down (redeemable against the bar on the night) and as long as our friends drink plenty we won't have to spend anymore! Other than catering it's been super cheap .
Try looking at venues that aren't typical wedding venues. Ours is an old lock keepers house turned into a bar. It's stunning (and haunted )

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 16 Aug 2017

I was at a wedding in Glasgow in July at a venue called st Luke's and the winged ox - not sure about price but service, atmosphere and food were amazing and a really unusual venue

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 16 Aug 2017

Do a village hall if you look around there are some lovely ones, it is exclusive for you, they always come with outside space and you can supply your own drinks without corkage :) x

GROUPON sometimes have wedding packages that are reasonable although you may have to be flexible on the places. I found a wedding package for 2.5k in York at the Mecure Hotel and it was beautiful so it is out there

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 16 Aug 2017

Look into getting married during off peak wedding season! Sept-Feb
My venue would have cost me £4200 more than I'm paying if I got married in August compared to when I get married in October!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 16 Aug 2017

Get a late deal. We booked 3 months from the date, and it was so much cheaper!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 16 Aug 2017

I'm confused!
Are you asking us if you're engaged after 10 years (question makes indicate you're asking a question. Perhaps ask your partner if you're engaged?)

Also, are you telling us, or asking us how expensive weddings are (again.the question mark thing)

I'm also failing to understand whats funny about not wanting a church wedding (I didnt have one, but the reason for the "lol" goes straight over my head?)

Are you asking us, or telling us that you've looked at hotels, and come away with high price tags ( "?" means you're asking a question) I would just suggest, if you're interested in a hotel wedding, that you shop around, or maybe try google searching "£999 wedding" and see if there is anything in your area. There were several wedding packages local to me, that were budget friendly.

Once again, your use of question marks, in relation to the Australia thing is confusing, if this is a question, then I know nothing about immigration, so cant help there. Although perhaps you're telling us (rather than asking)that you're immigrating, that it'll cost £10k, and therefore highlighting the reason for needing a lower budget wedding?

In terms of asking us if you can afford a £6k wedding budget, this is a question to ask yourself. You need to establish yourself what your budget is. This needs to be your very first step, from there you can consider the best option for your wedding.

As for how to find cheaper weddings, I suggest deciding exactly what your budget is, and then going from there, try a google search again with "2k wedding package in ......" Trt and go to local wedding fares to you. Have you considered getting married abroad? Or, maybe recisdier the idea of a registry office?

Apologies if i've missed the point of this post, in confused my little dyslexic brain trying to establish what you were saying, and if much of it was questions or statements!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 16 Aug 2017

we've saved half the venue cost by booking midweek! Your guests will need a bit more notice to take the day (and maybe the next one) off, but doubt many of them will mind :) then you can put the money saved towards the meal/dress/whatever else you still need to pay for. Best of luck!

Emma Richardson
Emma Richardson 16 Aug 2017

Why not get married through the week package deals are cheaper and as long as you give people plenty notice I'm sure they could get the wedding off and maybe the day after off.

Emily Barnett
Emily Barnett 16 Aug 2017

UKbride Administrator

I got married in January in my dream venue (which made it cheaper) it really depends on the venue & also compromising is the the key! A friend made my cakes (they were perfection) my dress was in the sale, decoration I bought myself etc I shopped around & spent £3500 all in! It's doable but you need to put in the work & shop around xx good luck & congratulations! (We married on our 10 year anniversary lol)

Try a village hall or golf club or something. Our local cricket club lets you use the venue for free if you have 50 people coming. Then call in some favours for cake and food etc or buy from your local supermarket. They do some ace cakes too. I had this discussion with a colleague of mine. They didn't believe you could do it on a low budget. He's now taken some of my ideas and using them. Most of my budget is in my venue but there's loads f ways to keep the cost down. There's apps too for photos so you could skimp on a photographer. Or like I did, I entered a competition online and won a discounted package. I'm planning on making my own origami flowers too. Good luck!

Have you tried your local town/village/community Hall? We were married in paisley town Hall and it was reasonably priced for the rent of the whole building for the whole day. You then just need to find reasonable catering.

You've got a lot of replies, so not sure if this has already been suggested - but if you're prepared to do it, a lot of venues offer discounted packages for dates that are both out of prime season and nearing - as in spring 2018. We booked ours for February 2018 with 10 months to go, and got it at half the price it should normally be! xxx

Try looking at alternative venues. I got married in the planetarium at the centre for life in newcastle. The package for a full day wedding breakfast evening do and dj was only 2500. I didnt want to spend a fortune on a wedding either. So ive opted for a short church wedding (our vicar is so down to earth and is happy to have us married and out the door in half hour ) and then the local social club which has its own private hall with stage area ect. Small buffet with the market food van coming at around 7pm for hot food. For everything we have spent less than £1500 & we have 110 guests to the day & another 100 ontop for the evening. You can still have an extremely special day at a cheap price. It all depends on what you want aswel. We have been together 5 years and tbh see a wedding as just a name change for me, a big family get together & a piece of paper that tells us we are a partnership. So for us cheap and cheerful was a way forward xx
