I have a close male friend attending the wedding, and would really like him to have some special part in our day. We have other people doing our readings, and are only having a maid of honour and best man (no bridesmaids/bridesmen/groomsmen) because it's a small wedding. Best man will be ring bearer so that role's gone too. Any ideas on something we could give him to do that would make him feel more a part of our day than just a guest?

Maybe a speech at your reception?

Maybe he could be a witness?

He could help seating the guests on the day and help the best man with general "on the day" duties x

I would ask him to hold the rings! The best man will have other jobs to make him feel special and it's a nice gesture that he would have to stand up and present your rings!
