So, I really want to go on our Honeymoon in my married name, but obviously...

So, I really want to go on our Honeymoon in my married name, but obviously my passport will still be in my maiden name. We are planning on going to the Honeymoon (Or at least Airport hotel) straight from the reception, so won't be any time to sort it out afterwards. I know you can renew/update your passport, but don't you have to wait until you have a marriage certificate before changing the name on your passport? Because surely until you are legally married, you can't just change your name? Or is it best to just suck it up and go on honeymoon under my maiden name and then sort it out later? Anyone else done this?

I went under my maiden name. Didn't bother me in the slightest. It's all about how YOU feel. One thing I learned planning our wedding was keeping ourselves happy

My passport expired too a few months before my wedding and I was able to get a new one issued in my married name. I had to go to the registry office and get them to complete a form that accompanied my passport application. I imagine there is something similar you can do with a church wedding if that is the case. The passport isnt valid until the day of your wedding and if the wedding doesnt go ahead then it is never valid and has to be returned

I have booked honeymoon in my married name, we go 2 days after we get married. You can apply 3 months before, you need to complete a PD2 form on the .gov website and send to local registry office, once you have this back you need to complete the passport form online or at the post office sending this form with passport photos etc and will be processed within a matter of weeks

I got mine predated about 6 weeks before my wedding. It wasn't valid until my wedding day. You just need to get your registrar to sign to say they're marrying you x

I'm getting married in September and flying out on our honeymoon 4 days later.. You don't need your passport to say your new name.. The travel agent said it's obvious you'll go in your maiden name. Get it sorted when you get back.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 31 Jul 2017

Our travel agents (Thompson) said it was fine to keep maiden name (we're going 3 months after Wedding) and they've noted on our hotel booking it's our honey moon

You can get it made up to start on your wedding day with your name. It is a bit awkward I believe and I've personally chosen not to risk it.

You can apply for a passport in your new name, they just put the start date for the day after your wedding. Think you have to get the registrars/church to sign something to say you're getting married and on what date x

Sorry to jump in but does anyone know the rule for an Irish passport as I'm going on my honeymoon in new name and my passport ran out years ago

UKbride Administrator 31 Jul 2017

I didn't change my passport for 3 years after I was married. I couldn't care less what my name was as I knew I was married. I changed other things though but you don't legally have to change your passport.

Your can change the name on your passport 3 months before you get married for instances like this. I have mine already and we don't get married for another 4 and a bit weeks. It is valid from the date we get married. If you go on the .Gov website it tells you what you need to do xxx

Get a new passport before the ceremony
You can apply for a passport in your new name up to 3 months before your marriage or civil partnership ceremony.

Your old passport will be cancelled. Your new passport is ‘post-dated’ - you can’t use it before the ceremony.

Some countries won’t issue visas for post-dated passports - check with the country’s embassy or consulate.

You must send a ‘passports for newly weds and civil partners’ form with your application. It must be signed by the religious minister or registrar who will conduct the ceremony.

You can order your passport in your new name and it won't be in date until your wedding day therefore it will be in your new name

I still have my passport in my maiden name as i had like 6 years left on it! Wasnt going to waste it altho everything else is in my married name x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 31 Jul 2017

You get a form off the internet and send it to the registrar or whomever is marrying you and get them to sign to say you will be married. Mine came back in days and then i sent it off with my passport application and the new passport was back within 10 days. It gets dated from the day you get married

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 31 Jul 2017

I still have 7 years left of my passport I'm not paying another 70 quid for a new passport just to put my married name on so in 7 years i'l change it then. But everyone is different and have to do what is right for them x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 31 Jul 2017

I flew 2 days after our wedding in my married name. You can apply for your passport in your married name so many months before. Google will tell you! Our vicar signed paperwork and I had to sign to say if we didn't marry that I wouldn't travel. It was dated from the day we got married xx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 31 Jul 2017

You can keep your maiden name on it, and use it until it expires just make sure whenever you travel until it expires, you book in the maiden name as it is on your passport. I wouldn't waste money changing it. My bank and passport are born still in my maiden name. It's just hassle to change it! My driving licence has only just been changed as it needed renewing x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 1 Aug 2017

When I filled out all of the information for the registrar, there was an option to have a passport created in your married name for an extra cost, so you could travel straight away if you wish x

UKbride Administrator

You can apply for a passport in your married name 12weeks before you get married. You get them required form off the direct gov website and will need whoever is performing the ceremony to sign it. The passport will be valid from the day of your wedding. I did this and had my new passport within a week (I was told it was going to take 8wks). Your old passport will be cancelled as soon as a new one is issued but they add on what's left on your old passport to your new one x

UKbride Administrator

I would just go under your maiden name and sort it out when you get back. You don't need that sort of stress!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 1 Aug 2017

You can do it but you can't apply for a passport in your married name until 3 months before the wedding but you then can't leave the country in those three months because it won't be legal until your wedding (this was the case when I got married three years ago, check the government website for up to date info) so I didn't bother as all the issues they had with delays on passports around then put me off. I was told just to take my marriage certificate with me just in case I was questioned by security but that was only because we went to the USA, all was fine. We just booked all in my maiden name and then just changed it all to my married name when we got back. You'll be listed as honeymooners anyways so there will be no need for you to really travel in your married name, it doesn't make much of a difference if I'm honest.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 1 Aug 2017

You can change your name on your passport prior to your wedding with a letter from the registrar of your intent etc. X

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 1 Aug 2017

You can have your passport changed 3 months before your wedding date to your married name, the person marrying you signs a form and you send it off to the passport agency, you new passport will not be valid until your wedding day, you can then travel on your honeymoon with it. I did the my first wedding xx

There is a form.get from post office and get sent of to be signed by the registrar or or minister. Then send it off with passport application in it new name. I have done it. Can't do it before 3 months until he wedding though

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 1 Aug 2017

You can do it before if you really want to. It makes no difference though because I travelled on my maiden name but we were still referred to as Mr and Mrs Milnes all holiday because the resort knew it was our honeymoon x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 1 Aug 2017

I did this but was warned it can cause problems if you want to use your passport and driving licence as ID as they will be in different names!
Best to take your wedding cert with you too which is what I did.
As it was, there wasn't a problem when we hired a car in Cyprus. You have to full in a special form and get it signed by the registrar when you will get married.
It is then the registrars responsibilty to report you if you don't get married!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 1 Aug 2017

You can change your passport 3 months before your wedding to what your married name will be but it is only valid from the point of your marriage. I've had the same problem my passport has expired and I wanted to renew but this what they told me. X

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 1 Aug 2017

I changed mine before I was married you fill in a form.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 1 Aug 2017

You need to get the registrar to sign a form to say you are planning on marrying on 'insert date here' you send it off with the renewal form, you get your new passport but you can't use it till your married. If worse comes to worse and you don't get married you return the passport and assuming get your old one back

I got married last year and changed my passport before the wedding as I flew to the USA 2 days later you can get it changed up to 3 months before (the only thing is that you can't apply for the ESTA into America until your passport is valid on your wedding day but only took 10 min) x

Hi, i get married this weekend. My passport ran out in June. We looked on line and you can pront off a form called a PD2 get who is marrying you both to sign it. You also have to fill passport form in aswell. Its really straight forward. I got mine fast tracked so i went to Liverpool. With my details and pics( no need to sign them). All was ok and i received my new passport in the same week. It is only valid on my wedding day.
Hope this helps.

You can legally depole your name to your married name before the wedding it dosnt cost much, solicitors do it and there's legal online sites. The only thing is to ask the Regestry office just in case it affects the months notice but can't see why it would if you bring them a copy x
