Hi Alys the seamstress can't give you a rough idea unless she knows roughly how much needs altering. :)

I'm in the same situation. My seamstress said if it can be sewn with a machine then it's very straight forward, if it requires hand sewing that's where it takes more time and becomes more expensive. If there is edging on your dress and it needs taking up then this will have to be done by hand which will cost a bit more. Until they know how long it'll take them and how much work is involved they can't give a price unfortunately.

Main problem is at my first fitting I have to pay 50 percent but I can't budget for 50 percent cost of the alterations without having a clue about how much it will be

At a guess I'm thinking a couple of hundred but hoping it's cheaper. Are you able to over budget and then hopefully have some money left over. Hopefully someone can share how much it cost for them to get similar alterations done.

Could you take the dress down to her so she can see what she's working with? She may have a better idea of how much work is involved in the alterations then and be able to give a rough price xx
