If you are 100% sure it is 'the one' then go for it, but do not look at any others after you have brought it.

I bought mine 3 year before the wedding. Only went to look and found the one. Only downside was 3 year later...the year of the wedding I'd lost 3 stone. So had to get it seriously altered. You just have to remember to make sure it still fits or your looking at expensive alternations xxx

Get it. There's nothing wrong with changing your mind though, 5 years is a very long time and tastes change. I know a lady who had fallen in love with 4 dresses in the last 7 months! Granted that is unusual but not impossible that you'll also see other dresses that you like.

Ps just wondering why are you waiting 5 years? X

I wouldn't, I would change my mind or doubt myself, but if you've always been dead set on it then go for it, I get married 2019 and I haven't even been dress shopping yet, obviously I've got an idea of what I want but I'm not setting my mind until I've tried a few on xx

Almost 5 years for me is such a long time to be able to commit to a dress. You have to consider alterations and everything else. If you love it. Get it but don't look at any other dresses x

I'm getting married in June 2019 and don't plan to start looking until at least January next year. My best friend got her dress almost 2 years before her wedding and it's a stunning dress and looks amazing on her but she's told me I should wait as she feels she got hers too soon. 5 years is a long time away and our tastes change. What you like now you may not feel same about in 5 years time

way too soon!! fashion changes and so does the body! (sorry!) I get married next year and havent even found a dress yet so 5 years is a big commitment to one dress

I personally think it's too far away. We have a 5 year engagement and we didn't actually start booking and buying things till about 2 years before hand.

From personal experience I wanted to get my dress. Made as I knew what I wanted, but settled for a bridal shop dress for Β£1500 which I could have used to make the dress I wanted as I was quoted the same price. As much as I loved my bridal shop dress I regret not going for what I wanted. But it was a quick choice as we had to rush our wedding so whatever you do I would say.. take your time in your choice you don't want to regret picking one and then it not being what you thought it would turn out to be you have a few years yet but it's not about what any of us want it's about what you want. So do what makes you happy.

Hi I would not get my dress so much in advance styles will change and you might like another dress even more :)

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 25 Jul 2017

Go and try different dresses on.. the one you have your heart set on might not be what you like when you see it on.. trust me.. try all different dress styles even ones you wouldn't normally go for even if it's just to 100% rule them out and have fun with it!! X

Definitely way too early! I wouldn't personally recommend looking until at least a year before, so much can change in 5 years. In the space of about 3 months I totally changed my mind about what style of dress I wanted and I'm glad I didn't get the one I thought I liked, and that was only 15 months before the wedding. I definitely wouldn't recommend doing anything just yet, keep it as something to look forward to nearer the time :)

I think 5 years is too soon personally. You could change your mind, body shape can change, fashion and styles etc. You might spend a fortune now and in 5 years time not want it and be unable to sell it x

I'm getting married May 2019 and won't start looking until January 2018 ... fashion changes so quick and unfortunately so does my weight hahaha, you could start looking and trying on styles so you know what you like but I'd probably not buy xxx

I picked my dress in May and get married in November this year and I'm already questioning my choice - don't do it too early - you may drive yourself crazy over the choice with such a long time to go x

Best off waiting tbh

I'd say it's too early.. plus the type of dress you think you want may not be the one. I had my heart set on lace etc. I ended up with satin as they are completely different on. Enjoy the hunting tho. I loved dress shopping. .. x

I'd wait a while! I'm getting married August 2019 and wasn't going to start looking until mid next year, just because I'm going to lose quite a bit of weight before the wedding so don't want to get one now and have to get it altered over and over again.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 25 Jul 2017

I wouldn't buy a dress that early. Chances are that your body changes a lot until you get married, same with your taste. I'd suggest to try on a lot of dresses and collect tons of inspiration and then get serious about a year before the wedding date.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 25 Jul 2017

Definitely wouldn't get it five years in advance, your body could completely change in that time and your taste too, I would wait until at least 2020.

I wouldn't get it yet, had my heart set on a dress in 2013, bought it and then lost 9st so got to start again

UKbride Administrator 25 Jul 2017

I get married in 2019 and haven't even started looking yet, I wouldn't organise anything dress wise yet if I was you, I wanted to get mine as soon as I got engaged last year and was told it was too early as styles etc change so I'm starting after the summer this year

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 25 Jul 2017

I get married next November and am starting to look between now and November this year so allows just over a year to find the right dress andfor it to be made etc and also allows me enough time to lose weight

Far too soon! Five years is a long time to be organising a wedding. That's 5 years of changing your mind. Plus styles change too.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 25 Jul 2017

If you believe it is the one, go and try it on! I wasn't going to start dress shopping for ages but I saw the one and when I tried it on I knew it was perfect for me. You know yourself and you know whether your taste is likely to change! My tastes haven't changed at all throughout my life so I doubt they will now! If you feel you are likely to change your mind then don't start looking for a few years! Enjoy xx

I'd suggest waiting. I saw my dream dress and wanted to buy it but am glad now I resisted the urge. In that time you may no longer want the dress or it may no longer fit. You'll find another one in around 4 years time😊

I get married October next year and have my dress but i think 5 years it too soon. I had mt heart set on one, was like it had been made for me, until i tried it on so deffo try a few diff dresses and styles. You will kmow yourself though, if you tend to change your mind a lot etc. I tried a few on and had to get the one i have, i haven't looked at others since but i also having avoided seeing others and i wouldn't look back. I love mines xxx

Oh wow 5 years! I had a week to get my dress! Found it in a charity shop, spent an evening altering it a little....22 years later, still happily married and would not change a thing! I'd wait with the dress. Your taste will change in 5 years!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 25 Jul 2017

I'd definitely wait. Nothing wrong with shopping around but you never know how much your body may change, never mind your taste and fashions x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 25 Jul 2017

I ordered my dress a little over 2 years in advance and although thankfully it is still the one I have stressed and shopped since then worrying that I might see something I like more so although I still love my pic I caused myself a bit of stress ordering it so early, and when I found it, it was a new collection so the shop still has it in stock now, I could have waited. I have no regrets but maybe don't rush yourself thinking you might miss out.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 25 Jul 2017

I got mine 10 months before and I was still thinking I wanted other dresses and had I made the right choice.go in open minded cos what you want isn't necessarily going to suit you.i wanted OTT ended up simple and elegant!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 26 Jul 2017

If you really want it that much would you be prepared to buy it now and sell it on if you change your mind? Yes you'd likely lose money but would that be worth not chancing losing the dress?!? πŸ₯‚

Katie Dury
Katie Dury 26 Jul 2017

You need to start getting it one year before according to the bridal shops I've been to.

Amy Pritchard

Thank you all for the feedback, I've seen a few people ask why I'm waiting 5 years well we have 4 children under the age of six. With our children being the ages they are now is hard work as they get board very easily and can get into some mischief at times and wount stay with babysitters for the evening. And my youngest is a newborn so I'd really want her to be old enough to take part in the wedding rather than being in her pram, I think I'll wait for as long as I can as I did see a post about creating a dress right for me so If the dress I want is no longer available and I still want that style I'll have one made xx
