My mum's friend owns a bridal shop - her advice is about a year beforehand. A lot of the gowns take 4-6months to be ordered in specially in your size. Then that gives you flexibility in case of putting on/losing weight and the chance for any design alterations (e.g. Adding sleeves or moving the hem)

I went in Feb which was 17 months from my wedding . The dress I chose takes 9 months to come Hope this helps
