I had my first dress fitting and my dress is too small. The shop tried telling me I had put weight on, I asked to be remeasured and my measurements are the same. They measured the dress and it is too small, they say its the manufacturers. They can not get me a new dress in time for my wedding so they wish to change the back from buttons and zip with diamantes into a corset. I'm not happy but what else can I do? Please help can I demand a replacemet dress or a refund and then where do I go with 7 weeks until my wedding?

Hi I believe that if the correct size was ordered you are within your right to ask a refund or if you have insurance try that :)

Naomi Chappel
Naomi Chappel 26 Jun 2017

I think you should have the right to request a refund. See if your insurance can help if you have it. I would then go around as many shops as you can to see if they have anything off the peg that you like x

That is outrageous! Fight it in whatever way you can don't let them walk all over you!

I was told that if the dress was faulty they had 2 weeks to send it back and get it changed. Get them to contact the manufacturer whilst you are in the shop.

If you let us know where in the UK you are we might be able to point you in the direction of places u can buy off of the rack x

Request a refund and buy one off the rack and have a seamstress do alterations if you need them lots of bridal shops have ready to buy and other places too! Don't panic it's Do able!

UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Wow!!! I'm sure they can source you a similar dress. Do they have any in stock available in a similar style? It may be sample that's the only thing with 7 weeks to go. Unless you go to an outlet like Wed2Be. That's awful that they've done that. I had to sign disclaimers to say I'd ordered a certain size etc. See if you can get a refund and or a replacement dress at least! It's their fault!

UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Try wed2b if you have one near and request a refund for the one you've already bought. Wed2b.co.uk do amazing dresses at low cost, mine didn't even need alteration x

Oh dear what a stress You should definitely fight to get a refund if you're not happy with the change. But maybe first go to somewhere where you can try on off the peg? I had to buy 2 dresses for my wedding because after I bought the first one I found out I was going to be 7 months pregnant when we got married, but I bought them both from wed2b and they were both stunning! They have around 1000 dresses in store so it would be hard not to find the one I think! Good luck! X

Demand a refund it's there fault.. and see if there is a shop called wed2be near you they are off the rack dresses and great prices.. I got mine from them and they are lovely... I eouldet the shop alter ur dress if it's not what u want x

Id go to Wed2be they're dresses are bought off the hanger so you can take it home that day OR I'd ring around a few bridal shops and ask what dresses they have available off the hanger in the size you need (usually sale dresses so cheaper too). Good luck!

UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Depending where you are in the country the shop told me the same but then my seamstress said there was no need she could alter the dress I'd ask to see the shops one and ask her opinion and make the shop pay if your near Trowbridge I'll happily give you mines number

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I had the same, they did all the alterations free of charge for me as couldn't get another dress in time and at the end of the day it's ultimately their fault! Stand your Ground!

I bought my dress and planned wedding in 10 weeks. Wed2be are amazing. Go there x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

If the dress was ordered using the correct measurements and the manufacturer has sent an wrongly sized dress then the shop should be contacting them to ask what they will be doing to correct it. Don't let them make you change your dress. It's their mess up and they should either sort it to your 100% satisfaction or give you your money back xx

UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

See if any one us selling one I have just got married and ian sure lots of other people have put your size on eBay or Facebook and see if anyone has got anything you like I know it's second hand and maybe not what you want but it's an idea x

The dress is not fit for purpose you are with in your rights to ask for a full refund.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Can you tell us who the retailer is? I'd like to avoid that. Bless you what a stress, I hope you get a gorgeous dress.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I agree fight to get a refund if you don't want a corset go off the peg somewhere else, mine was off the peg a size too big so had it taken in and it was gorgeous!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Is there room in the seams to let the dress out at all?

Our bridesmaids dresses arrived smaller than ordered, was a stress but luckily I ordered really early in the first place. It took about 8 weeks to return them and remake but in this instance they should ship a second without first waiting for yours to be returned surely?!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Request a refund then go to wed2b if there is one near you. You can take away your dress on the day and they have lots of choice x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Oh no. They always go by your biggest area or at least they should do. Definitely put your foot down they need to sort it as it's their mistake especially if your measuring the same as when you was originally. This should be a lovely memory not upsetting. If they can't get the correct size in ask for a refund . I hope it gets sorted for you xx

Siobhan Ireland
Siobhan Ireland 27 Jun 2017

Can they not order a dress in a rush. I am sure the manufacturer would want that too!!! Xx

Jenny Collier
Jenny Collier 27 Jun 2017

Who is the retailer? Sounds awful and very stressful. I think you're in your right to have a full refund or they replace the dress with a off the peg one of your choice maybe xx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I think they have a duty to help you get a new dress in time for your wedding even if it is the one off the rail being only 7 weeks now. Definitely fight it. Do they have your dress on the rail that is a bigger size? I know it's not massively ideal as you wanted a new one but the store should really offer you something for the trouble. They should have checked the dress properly when it came in . Good luck!

Laura Roberts
Laura Roberts 27 Jun 2017

I'd be demanding they contacted the manufacturers to see what they were going to do since they sent it too small, or asking them for the number to do it myself, either that, or a refund. You ordered the dress cause that's what you wanted, don't let them make you change it when it's not your fault that it's wrong! X

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I had a similar issue. The shop ordered me a dress size smaller than I would normally wear as I have a small waist but didn't consider my hip measurements. My dress is highly embellished and has a shear back so I couldn't have any panels added. Luckily when taking the bottom up, my seamstress was able to increase the zip allowance that goes to the base of my spine and that was enough to make it fit properly. Have you seen a seamstress yet? Xx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

You should head to wed2b you can walk away with one the same day xx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

If the designers are at fault with your dress then they have a duty to fix it using their own seamstresses or replacing the gown. The shop should be on their case until it's sorted.

Samantha Kay
Samantha Kay 27 Jun 2017

Demand a refund then find a bridal outlet like wed2be xx

Alys Brierley

I would just lose the weight than stressing over finding a new dress

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Tell them to call the designers and explain that they have sent the wrong dress.....the designer still has a chance to fix this xx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Can they not put a panel in down the side rather than switch to a corset?

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I don't think going and buying a new dress is the answer, especially if this is "your" dress.
Your contract is with the shop and they have the contract with the manufacturer so they need to contact them to resolve it urgently. Don't let them talk you into a corset back if that's not what you want. It will completely change the dress. Talk to the shop calmly but firmly and insist it is sorted, even if at worse, it means them ringing other suppliers to see if they have a sample in your size that can be transferred over to you and then a percentage of the cost and/or compensation be returned to you x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Corsets can be beautiful! If it is still your dream dress, go with it x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I'd insist on a full refund then go find another dress, whether it be an off the peg one or in a sale. It's not your fault. The blame lies either with the shop for ordering the incorrect measurements or the manufacturer for sending the wrong dress. Don't be fobbed off with changing your dress for someone else's error.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

You can fight for a refund as it is your right. But.... you most likely not get another dress in time for your wedding. You could go to wed to be, but you may not find your dream dress. Maby try on another dress with a corset on it it a see how you feel in it? It may be worth a try xx

Samantha Buxton
Samantha Buxton 27 Jun 2017

Under the consumer goods act the dress is not fit for purpose and as they did not properly check sizing then they should offer you a suitable alternative or a refund. If they do not then you can report them to trading standards. Good luck!

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I would request a refund deffo. If they can sort out the dress I think a corset style sounds nice.... but u want compensation for the inconvenience. If manufacturer has sent wrong size they should foot the bill, supply a new dress free of charge or fix the one u chose and give u your money back.

Gabrielle Baker
Gabrielle Baker 27 Jun 2017

I would ask for the alterations be done for free and a partial refund 10% of the dress for there mistake.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I had the same. I had the zip removed and a lace up back put in and it looked so much nicer. X

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

My circumstances were slightly different but I ordered a dress a few sizes smaller cos I had over a year before my wedding n I didn't lose all the weight I wanted to. They did the same with me changed it into a corset and £300 later my dress fit. It's a difficult one cos they will have ordered the size according to your measurements xxx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Refund as it is clearly their issue. Then you can go to Wed2b and choose, try on and take your wedding dress there and then! The most they cost is £600 and they are lovely too. Good luck. x

Elizabeth Tooke
Elizabeth Tooke 27 Jun 2017

Get on the phone to the manufacturer. Is there a chance they sent the wrong dress. Accidents can happen cxxx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I had the same problem with bridesmaids dresses... they were wrong size and colour, only way I could get them in time with like 5 days before my wedding was to have all of them in the same style. Very frustrating!!!

Jessica Nicholls
Jessica Nicholls 27 Jun 2017

Full refund or as a last resort have the changes done for free this is awful!!

Celine Harland
Celine Harland 27 Jun 2017

I would suggest you let them alter the dress so you have it as a backup but definitely with the condition that you are also refunded. At the end of the day if they had time to replace the dress the manufacturer would be taking a loss so it's their error, the most important dress you will ever wear so let them fix it

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Fight them for full refund as the sizes have not been met and therefore they have broken the contract they have had with you. There are lots of places do dressed off the rack, so look about. This is obviously a sign your dress isn't actually the one xx

UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Hi this happened to me for all of our dresses with three weeks to go and we managed to pull it off, we went elsewhere and they were absolutely fabulous, it can be done! xx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Let them change it to a corset back and demand a refund for the stress. That's ridiculous! They should of had you in as soon as your dress arrived instead off waiting untill your first fitting. I'd be going crazy at them! If they don't do anything threaten to take it all over social media they will soon change their mind and help you out! Hope you get it sorted and have a fantastic day x

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Surely the fact that they are willing to adjust it shows that they take responsibility and therefore liability that they have made a mistake!! I agree with others full refund in order and get a dress off the peg. I bought my dress off the peg as I have left it quite close to my wedding next month as wanted to lose weight first! I still managed to get the dress of my dreams! This sounds so stressful at what should be an amazing time. Wishing you all the best of luck x x

This happened to me... only the shop insisted I had gained weight as suggested I lost weight. I explained I had no intentions of losing weight (I'm a size 8/10)
They had ordered the dress in the wrong size but as I didn't have a size written on my paperwork I didn't have a leg to stand on.

I got them to let it out as much as they could and thankfully it fits.
I was going to demand that they gave me the sample dress instead so maybe you could try that and get a refund on your dress xxx

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Speak to citizens advice & they'll give you the legal lingo to use. My dress was completely wrong & she refused to refund me but with the advice I got I was able to make her. Then I got a dress that I adored (amongst the panic, don't worry it'll be fine!). I ended up getting one I thought was too expensive before but I got the one used in the shop for ppl to try on so discounted. It was perfect condition but cheaper. You can always get someone else to alter it last min. The whole shit situation meant it worked out better, same could be for you

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

Go to wed2 be afther demanding a refund tell them its there mistake not yours i would not risk them putting a corset incase they make a other mistake good luck and hòpe all goes well

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 27 Jun 2017

I used to work for a store that were notorious for doing this! They'd use all the excuses in the book but at the end of the day they have to provide you with what you ordered so don't let them push you into something you don't want.
Fight it with them, they have either converted your measurements incorrectly and ordered the wrong size or the manufacturer has sent the wrong size. They have to provide you with the dress you ordered in the size you ordered or a full refund x
