How much can should we expect to pay for a photographer? I have no idea what to look for and most photographers do not have prices on their sites. If we talk to photographers are we likely to be able to swing some sort of deal? It is so expensive but is probably the most important cost so really want to get it right. Any advice will be much appreciated!!

You can negotiate with some. Our photographers have fit our package to what we needed and we got all we wanted for a really good price. Good luck. X

My advice is speak to people who have got married I was looking around and we where quoted nearly £1,200 just for the day, but after speaking to others who had got married we have a local lady who charges much less than that and does engagement shoot aswell as stay all day and night x

Don't skimp on your photography, we're paying £895 with mates rates other wise it'd be a good £1200

Ours is £1500 and we went with a recommendation.

Mine is costing £1595 but that's including a pre wedding shoot which will be used in our guest book they are making too x

Depending on your package you are looking around £1,000. You can get coverage of the full day from getting ready to after the first dance or for a selected amount of hours. The price will also vary for what you are getting e.g USB, prints, album. Sometimes you also get an engagement shoot included. A photographer will generally charge for any extra miles they have to travel to your venue outside of their area. The best thing to do is contact the photographers who have portfolios you like the look of and ask for quotes. Communication with them from step one is the most important thing! My photographer is £1,800 for all day and USB.

when we were looking most in our area wanted over £600 just for a basic package and that didnt include what we wanted lol others were over £1000 lol luckily i compromised with one i found told them we just wanted photos taken at church ceremony before and after and all photos just putting on a stick and only a few edited as my mum could edit them :) they were local and listen to what we wanted did what we wanted for £170 which helped us save loads x

I spent £350 for a day package from bridal prep to first dance. Two prints and access to all the photos on a USB drive.

Can not warrant spending so much money on photos!!! My friend is doing ours for free!!!!

Contact your local uni and see if anyone in photography needs a weeding for a port folio (most of them will) they will all be almost qualified and they do it for free unless you want editing hours in which case I think they charge £10 an hour so looking at no more than £120

We paid £500 for our that was initially two photographers one at mine getting ready and one with my hubby then down to one from church right through to first dance and cutting of cake :-) she was totally amazing I got an engagement shoot plus memory stick with pics and memory stick with wedding pics on xxx

Depends what you're after in terms of package, style, how many photographers, any pre wedding shoots, etc. We paid £975 for ours on the day, including two photographers, a pre wedding shoot, all photos on a USB and a print. We did haggle and get £200 off and the print thrown in. However, I charge £600 for the day, one photographer and all of your final images on a USB, no pre wedding shoot. I would recommend investing thought in to this and not doing as some people advise and get a mate to do them for free. Photos and videos are the one of the few things you take away from this day and worth investing in. I haven't met anyone that had a family member do them yet, that hasn't gone wrong, unless their family member already does wedding photography and are doing it as a gift. x

Hi I'm a wedding photographer based in Bedfordshire, but willing to travel (your post doesn't say your location, travel costs may apply, these are listed on my website)... I do have prices on my website, plus a gallery of my work and testimonials. Feel free to get in touch! Have fun planning your wedding xx

My advice is don't skimp on a photographer. After the venue, they were the most important thing to us. Different areas will affect the prices too. One thing I'd suggest is don't waste money on disposable cameras either...I know too many that did this and their photos are appalling. Having lovely photos to look back on is the best memory you'll have. You also got to remember that although their prices will sound alot, it's not just their hours at your wedding you're paying for. In total I think your average photographer will spend around 60 hours completing, editing etc all your pics. We have a couple at our wedding, a man and a lady and we're paying over £1500 and it's totally worth it in our opinion. X

We were lucky a friend did ours for a wedding present. She's a professional photographer and was very good. We were quoted from others from £200 up to £1000. Ours went to the hair salon with me and did photos at home and at the venue and reception. We got our photos on a memory stick and could get ones we wanted afterward. We've one big one of me my hubby and sons blown up in a frame. My advice is to shop around as there is some good ones. Facebook also have them advertised. Ask friends if they know any good photographers

We paid £900 for 2 photographers all images on USB, 75 of which we had edited to how we wanted and they were made into a photo book. Also the did a photo booth option ( they controlled the camera it wasn't an actually booth ).

We paid around £1700 for an engagement shoot and full day coverage, all the images were amazingly edited and available to everyone for free download
More importantly the photographer was a really friendly and engaging person, everyone commented on how great he was and how he got such brilliant photos.
Totally worth it

We're paying £995. That includes an engagement shoot. A frame photo as an alternative guestbook. Prep till first dance (about 9hrs) 500-600 retouched digital images with all the copy right (not everyone offers this!) And a story book album. Most importantly find someone you're happy to have that up close and personal with. We're going for a relaxed/kodak moment style with a few traditional photos for families

Look for photos you like from photographers and then contact for prices and availability. They will explain what the package includes too. Ours was about 2k I think but included a pre wedding shoot and big print of that (we used for people to sign) 2 photographers from prep to first dance, easy download of all pictures so we can order our own prints and a photo album that otherwise would have been £500 extra. They had cheaper packages with only one photographer etc but I knew what I wanted exactly and their style was perfect. The photos are amazing and I am so glad we used them!

It really depends on what you want and how long they will be there for. One bit of advice I would give though is a have a think about what you want from your wedding day. I wanted my photos to be relaxed and very few 'formal' photos. I hate getting photos taken and prefer them to look natural. My photographer was great at the in the moment shots and it was exactly what I wanted. Meet potential photographers and make sure you feel comfortable with them. I really think that's important (or it was for me). When factoring in the price you need to think that they will probably be doing more work after your wedding with editing etc than the time spent on the day. I was £1200 and that was from getting ready all the way through to the start of the evening. Included USB and a gorgeous leather engraved photo book. I'm based in Scotland so if your in Scotland I can give you a couple of photographers names that are fab but your right to see it is an important cost so don't be tempted to go with deals that seem too good to be true.xx

I got mine as a deal, originally £600 down to £325. I know they can go up into the thousands. I don't want anything flashy, just a USB with the photos on.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 4 Mar 2017

I would say defiantly do your research, some photographers are a lot more expensive then others. For example I got quoted £1,400 from one and £800 from another for the exact same package (bridal prep to 1st dance). So it's worth getting a few quotes and see what one you like the best. X

We can't afford that much so my fiance's father is taking our pics.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 4 Mar 2017

I found that if they don't have prices they were way over priced! Don't believe the people who say 'don't skimp' you can find amazing photographers with deals under a grand. We went with Rob Freeman who was £925 with 50 prints and the rest on a personalised USB. The photos come in a wooden presentation box which is like a display in its self. We were never going to get an album as they cost loads and you never look at them. We also got an engagement shoot included and a second photographer.
Honestly shop around and my advice is be comfortable with them, they're with you all day! X

We are just having a photographer for the ceremony. I'm not fussed about the evening reception and I really don't want someone in my face while I'm getting ready in the morning. Some photographers offer a "special moments" deal where they capture a specific point/moment that you want. My photographer is D.T Miles (Danny Miles) and the package is £200. We also considered a photography student from one of the local colleges as you get a cheaper rate and they get to build their portfolio so everyone wins!

We paid £900 for ours. He was top of the trade had everything we wanted was absolutely perfect we fell in love with his work. The night before my wedding he was rushed into hospital and needed emergency surgery. Luckily he works alongside all the photographers in his experience and excellence. Which meant we had a substitute Photograoher. This was all covered in the cost we already paid. Thank goodness we paid the extra for a decent photographer or we'd have nothing. Make sure you check what their policy is with regards to emergencies. Something I always tell people because it could happen to anyone. I never thought it would happen to me but it did. Xx

I do wedding fayres with a few mega talented photographers, and they're around £1000 - £1200. You really do get what you pay for when it comes to camera quality, editing and photo styles.

I've had a such a huge range of quotes from £600 - £1700!! We've now booked our photographer and are paying £800 for a full day plus edits and access to an online album plus the edited photos on a USB. We decided not to pay for an album as we'd rather scrapbook our own and make it more personal x

Location seems to be the key. Where I live all of the good packages start at about £1500 for a full day. But I know that they are cheaper in other areas. Go to some fayres, do your research & find a deal that you like x

I paid just under a grand and he was insanely good! You can't retake any photos so I think photos are with splashing out for. I know too many people who got a cheap deal and wish they hadn't. You get what you pay for and I reckon a grand is a good budget xx

There isn't always a perfect outcome with this .. I found most of the expensive ones edited photos to within an inch of being real photos or being graphics and they didn't like being told what shots we wanted or how we wanted it to look. I appreciate it's their work but they are commissioned by you to get the images and memories you want of your big day.. not a free for all! I do amateur photography at friends weddings for free because I don't believe in paying £1200 for photos of your wedding. I gave up with the highly recommended places and looked around .. We found a photographer whose work we liked, we got to know him .. found out how and why he does what he does .. and he did 10 hours at our wedding for £300! He is a dear friend after getting to know him for the last two years and I love the photos we got. His name is Ronnie Murphy .. check him out .. xxx

We paid £895 for ours. He did from getting ready to first dance, but stayed a bit longer in the evening to take a few extras. We got a little box with a USB stick and a bundle of the photos printed out. He knocked £100 off as he'd been recommended to us

We were originally paying 450 for our photographer who was also throwing in an evening photo booth for free, but now 3 months before the wedding I was browsing his Facebook page and the pictures were just hurrendous and lots of customers were upset saying they have no good memories of their big day because the photos were a disgrace. We went in to a major panic and looked for recommendations, one great one we found had a studio shoot booked in but moved things around to shoot our wedding. We are now paying 900 and that's with a discount, so double what we were originally paying but he is incredible so I guess you definately do get what you pay for. Be careful if they seem very cheap!
