Hi all. We have finally decided on our venue and want to book it asap. However the date we want is March 2019 and the registrar will only book ceremonies a year in advance. They have told me that I am pretty much guaranteed to get my preferred date and time as long as I call them first thing exactly 1 year before the wedding. I am now worried that I will book the venue and not be able to get a registrar. Has anyone else been in this situation and am I panicking unnecessarily?
You will be fine if you do it when they suggest, otherwise you will lose your venue too won't you!
Can they not take a deposit to grab that date first as soon as it's a year before? Xx
You will be fine as we booked our venue a year and half in advance and told the registrar and they penciled us in and we then paid and secured the date 8 months before hand and it was fine.
We booked our wedding with the venue more than a year in advance and was in the same situation as you where we had to wait until we could book the registrar. I phoned them up exactly a year before our wedding and it was all fine and they got us booked in.
I think it depends what council your under as we booked ours more than a year in advance xx
I booked my registar in january last year for my wedding in November last year. Had no issues and choices of times etc.
We booked the venue before booking the registrar and we got the date and time we wanted! Congrats and good luck x
We were fine, booked our venue way before the ceremony for the same reason and it was no issue at all
You will be fine :) book your venue and then your registrar the year before. People think things get booked up but they really don't. Particularly for March. The main benefit of booking things early is it gives you time to pay for it. I wouldn't worry at all. Enjoy wedding planning!
You will be fine just ring a year in advance Iv not heard of anyone not getting there date when calling this far in advance. Stop worrying it's a long way off. X
I was able to book 2 years in advance...
We provisionally booked our registrar 18 months in advance. We then have to go in 1 year in advance to give notice. I'm sure you will get your date
We booked our venue in January this year to get married June 2018. When I called the registrar they made a temporary booking and took a deposit but have to call a year before to go give notice
I did the same it was all fine :)
We booked the venue more than a year in advance but just made sure that exactly a year before we saw the registrar, and got our chosen time and date
I booked my venue first & rang up first thing in the morning exactly a year to the date & got it. There shouldn't be a problem xxx
I paid £35 to reserve the date 19months before then the year before I booked. They do make you worry unnecessarily but enjoy every moment
U can't legally book the registrar until within a yr of the marriage date so it should be fine, as for the venue, we booked ours 3 yrs In advance x
Some counties will not let you book more than 12 months before...but don't worry, because nobody else is able to book them for that date either. Just set a reminder for exactly one year to the date and ring that morning! X
Yeah we haven't booked our registrar yet. We get married April 2018. X
A year is standard. There are lots of registrars so I'm sure they can get one for you. Do not panic and start putting on existent obstacles in your way xx
I booked my venue in Oct 16 for July 18 and was told the same. Don't worry. Im gonna play dumb around May and try to book and see what they say
Our registrar said the same thing. I called them a few times and eventually they let us book it earlier. Try not to worry, maybe ask them to pencil it in? Happy planning Xox
I am gonna arrange to start late that day so I can ring them first thing
We've been able to book our registrar and secure the date with a deposit .. that was almost 2 yrs in advance .. but I guess it depends on the County Council ...
You will be fine - I called my local registrar about 3 months ago to ask about the banns (we get married in April) and they asked if I wanted to hear my options for halls that day (but we're getting married in the church) they only had one booking in 1/5 halls on that day and it's a Saturday)
I was able to book amd pay a deposit 18months in advance just cant do any of the legal paper work untill the wedding is less then a year away.
We booked ours 2 years in advance- cost us an extra £50 for piece of mind, but couldn't do paperwork until less than one year to date.
I get married September 2019 and i wanted to sort my registrar before I booked my venue, I was able to provisionally book my registrar for my date but I can't pay the fee or fill in the legal work until September next year, I think it's different for different parts of the country though I'm from Northern Ireland
I paid deposit and booked 2 years in advance x
I thought the same but was fine! As long as you have your marriage meeting with the council you'll be good to book your date with the registrar. We got our date all be it half an hour later than we wanted. We booked it about 10 months in advance as we'd have the marriage meeting 12 months before at the council.
We were able to pencil in with the registrar but not actually book it. They wrote us in and said phone back on the day 1 year in advance to guarantee.
We can book registrar 2 years in advance, when i spoke to them They said ring up on exactly the date wanted and book it then so i would say same for you as well
You could use a Celebrant instead and book it now x
I was able to book mine 2 years ago foe may this year pay £50 deposit then we had to go anytime betweens when you get married till 3 months before ti register you marriage incase anyone objects or your already married and things like that then in april we have to pay the full amount x
We have booked our date ( next April) and are going to make our registrars appointment one year exactly from our date. I was told on the phone it was a firm booking, we just need to take our paperwork in and pay our fee one year before the wedding date.
We were able to book more than 2 years in advance with a £75 deposit. We then went and gave our notices of marriage last week which has to be within a year of the date of the wedding x
We had to do this but I phoned up first thing and got my choice of time without a problem! I remember feeling stressed about it but we had no problem! X
Yes I did this and like you I was worried as most things venue ect were booked before the registrar ... and on that day one year before bang on 9am I rang and got exactly what I wanted ... xx you'll be fine xx
I was exactly the same. Our registrar booked 2 years in advance only.
Booked the venue 2.5 years early, then rang up exactly 2 years to the day before the wedding and booked the registrar.
No problem and got the time we wanted.
Our venue said that if the worst happened and we couldn't have that day/time then the would let us pick a different day for no charge.
Things don't get as booked up as you think :) we're getting married on the most popular day of the year this year and we even managed to get our preferred time
I get married in March 2018 & have my registrar provisionally booked from June last year. They've told me that as long as I've got back in touch & booked an appointment to see her by end of April this year, we are fine. Obviously if we don't get in touch with her, she'll take it as though we don't want the date & let it go to someone else. Ive also seen on here (on a similar post a while ago now!) that some other areas ask for a 'holding fee' of £50. Does your area not offer anything like that?
I booked my wedding in January last year and didn't get round to booking a humanist until last month. Don't panic, there will be plenty of registrars available, just book your venue as they are harder to get the longer you leave it.
You will be okay!! We booked our venue in March 2014 and didn't get married until 30th July 2016!! We phoned registrar early July 2015 and was able to book it. Enjoy planning! X
You'll be absolutely fine. Nobody else can book the registrar that far in advance either :-) I'm pretty confident you're going to secure a registrar for the date you need. I'm in the same boat as you but I'm not worried. Relax, plan & enjoy xx
I am getting married next year in march and I have already found my venue so they have pencilled me in for that date then I can let them know wen booked register office xx
We only booked 4 weeks ago for 9 weeks time and I was the same But they had 0 bookings that day so you'll be fine xxx
It is one reason people book a Celebrant for their ceremony (and do the legal bit with two witnesses mid week in cheapest slot). Firm bookings can be taken well in advance and often Celebrants will only do one or two ceremonies in a day, whereas Registrars may have to take more. Of course couples then also get to know exactly who will do their ceremony and have the ceremony written especially for them with no limits on content.

I had the same thing, I made sure I was on the phone as soon as registrar opened on the day that was 12 months before our wedding. I got booked in no problem and got the ceremony time I wanted too xx
We did this however when i called they had the daye nut not time so we're having to get married an hour earlier than we wanted xxx
It'll be fine! We're getting married in march (3 weeks!) and only got engaged last April. We've had less than a year to do it all. Being in march it has been really easy as nobody else really has a wedding then so everyone is free. Don't stress, just enjoy it all, you have plenty of time
I was very similar situation. I booked venue 2 and half years in advance and registrar booked 2 years in advance. I booked the registrar first thing exactly 2 years before, then a few weeks l needed to change the time. It was fine.
they book up 2 3years in advance a booked registrar last month and am not gettin married till sep 2018 xx
I think most people have this problem we booked our venue ... the registrar pencilled us in but we had to call and pay the deposit and make an appointment to give notice a year before, its nothing to panic about its the same for all .... no-one else can book before then eitherx
I booked my venue and registrar for 2018 in 2015!! I would think as long as you phone a year in advance you would be fine!
We did it, called the registrar exactly a year before, no problems x
Im in the same boat. Luckily I have the day off this year and am determined to phone in first thing on the day to get the day next year. You'll be fine
our registrar said this but he also said if they dont have one of their registrars then they would bring one in from another district to do the service so dont worry i started booking thins in july 2015 for our wedding in august 2016 and it all went very well
We booked our venue but then when we booked registrar we couldnt get the tine we wanted. Luckily the time we got offered was only a hour later than what we wanted but otherwise we would have had a 'fake' ceremony on the day and do the legal bit earlier in the week
I booked my venue in Sept 2015 and booked the registrar in August 2016 xx
We struggled to get a registrar 18
Months in advance. And we can only get married at 5pm. Which we have accepted and are working around but not ideal. Just be careful xx
What is the usual fee of a registrar? My wedding is in a hotel not a church x
My wedding is 23rd March 2019, we booked it in September 2016.
Ring your local registrar and provisionally book the date. I think we paid £30 to hold our date then we have to ring a year in advance and pay the full.price xx
I had to do this and booked the morning off work to ring one year before! All times were available and it was in July! I think I worried to much but even if u didn't get the time you want (which I am sure you would) you would take any time given x
Same for me, don't worry just ring first thing on the date
You will always be able to get an officiant. Doesn't have to be person from your registry office where you get your legal papers from
I did the same I booked my venue 22 months in advance and booked the registra a year later. All worked out well
I booked my venue first and had to wait to book my registra, everything was fine :) xx
Worst case scenario you could find someone else to conduct your ceremony :-) we chose a humanist.. however I'm sure you would get one no worries anyway so don't panic and book away x
When you book the venue, ask the venue to put a clause in saying that it is subject to the availability of a registrar. The venue should be happy to do this. The contract can say that the date will be confirmed by a date one week after the first date you can book it.
Our Wedding is 18 months away and the local registrar could only just fit us in on our date. They don't do the legal paperwork more than 12 months in advance but they did allow is to reserve our date and time with a deposit. If I was you I'd call them and ask them again
