Any place has the potential to be amazing and beautiful, you could book somewhere for next to nothing and decorate it. Like what people do with old barns, I think they’re unbelievable x

We booked a local hotel, 3 stars etc, part of a chain, not too focused on weddings, more focused on restaurants and rooms, were having a party of 18 for day and additional 35-50 for evening, theyre covering cars, cake, decor, dj, piper, buffet for £2000, my advice would be to find somewhere similar with a low per person cost for the day guests, you'll usually find many discounts are given from suppliers through them x

It depends if you want the accommodation alongside for guests etc. If not- there are lots of barn/outdoor style venues which as said before look amazing and you can decorate to your own taste. So many things you could make yourself (signage, drinks station, candles in jars, fake flowers alongside real flowers, table decorations, seat decorations). This in itself can keep costs down.
However, if you are looking for accommodation- I agree to look for a hotel- I’ve found the packages are normally very good value and you can negotiate slightly on these things if you just ask! :)
One final point- weekdays and autumn will normally be the cheapest. Summer and winter (Christmas) weddings and weekends are a lot more! So if you could go for a weekday- you’d get a lot more for your money! Good luck with the planning! :)
