Please can I ask how much everyone is paying for their wedding cake, I didn't realise they would be so expensive and does anyone have any cheaper options?

We got ours from M&S.
Cheaper option plus you used to be able to get taster samples of the cakes they offer

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

My mother in law to be is making ours. X

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Paying under £200 for ours, but a lovely friend is making ours.... Maybe pop a recommendation on facebook? We decided to use our friend to support a local business! It's the best feeling ❤️❤️

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Was going to do a cheese and pork pie cake 😁 also can do Costco tray cake to be carved up

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We are having doughnuts instead from Krispy Kreme £89

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We are paying 550 for a 4tiered cake to fed 120ish people. We looked at M&S aswell though as their cakes look gorgeous and are much much cheaper, they also do sample cakes you can order online.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We are paying £270 for our cake which is a 4tier and should serve 150 x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Get them ready made and iced from marks and Spencer’s or Tesco’s they are delicious and look amazing . Pure white and different sizes . Look at them on Pinterest to see how to really make them your own .

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

£195 for a 2 tier. My friend got hers at M&S and it was wonderful for a really reasonable price x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Ours was 400 for 3 tier cake

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Not sure what area you are in but I found a lady in Leeds who did mine for £90. Will attach a picture to this comment xx

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We had a naked cake 4 years ago, the cake maker told us they worked out about half the price of iced cakes due to the amount of work that goes into decorating an iced cake. Neither of us like icing anyway so it was an obvious choice and with some flowers it was stunning.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Were having a 4 tiered cake its costing us £395 i have made each tier bigger....

Where abouts are you based ? Our cake is being made by Croxley cakes her cakes are amazing

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We paid £400 for a four tier semi naked cake all different flavours, I’d say just look around and see what works best for you. Bit harder with there being no actual physical wedding fairs ( we found our lady at a wedding fair and fell in love with her cakes) but at the end of the day it’s all down to personal choice 🙂

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

My Dad make professionals cakes, we’re paying him £500 for a 6 tier beauty and the beast bridge cake

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Got mine from Waitrose and had a friend decorate it for me 🙌🏻

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Cupcake towers or naked/semi naked options are cheaper options 😊

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We are having doughnuts 🍩

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We have having two polystyrene tiers and only one real cake tier to feed 100. It will all be decorated so no one will know. Cost £150 xx

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Do you know someone who can bake and could do something simple for you. Hubby’s stepmum made ours.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

£800 but thats a cake and over 100 cupcakes

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We are having a pork pie cake which is £50 for two tiers and then serving it with cheese and crackers at the evening x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Were having a cake instead of a wedding cake with cupcakes and its cost is under £200 😄

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We paid £200 for our wedding cake. It was home made 4 tier. It was from someone who did them at home rather from a shop. I was quoted double from a shop rather someone who worked from home for the same design etc

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Cloud Nine Cake Centre do iced cakes and post out all over the UK.You can get cake kits, they send you the iced cakes and everything that goes with it and all you have to do is put it together or just buy everything separately. It means you can change coulours and get the exact cake instead of just plain white.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Ours cost £366, we had 3 tiers but loads of decoration and little bits on it so it added up

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We got a friend to make ours and it was amazing! So any budding bakers on your guest list just ask!

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We are having 4 theirs different flavours and some fresh flowers for £350

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We have paid £250 for a 2 tier x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

I got mine from 3d cakes on a deal 4 tier cake for 179

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Just get a cake from a supermarket hun, no one really cares, at the end of the day it's just a cake xx

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Somebody that can do fake cake

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

£120 for a 4 tier cheese cake with other slices of cheese around the edge 😊😊 although doubting its going to go ahead so will be hosting a cheese and wine party...

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We made our own, £75 for the pans, ingredients and decorations

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

£385 for a 3 tier in Dorset, area does alter the price of the cake too.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We got a family member making ours for a small price, she’s great at baking cakes so 100% trust her to do a good job.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

M&S do cheap plain cakes and sheet cakes to cut up. You can decorate it yourself.
I'm having one small top tier and cup cakes so I can keep the cake to freeze for our 1st anniversary and then a cupcake for each person. My cake lady is charging £250 for 8' top tier and 160 cupcakes, plus a bit more for cake stand and set up.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We’re having 4 tiers of cheese 😁

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

WOW l cant believe how cheap some of you are paying. I can barely see your bakers making a profit from some of these cakes let alone a wage.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We got ours from M&S, we bought three tiers that were already iced , and then my Dad decorated it with edible flowers and our cake topper. X

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

£200 for a 3 tier cake

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

One of my best friends made our wedding cake as our wedding gift. We had a 2 tiered red white and gold cake with red velvet and chocolate cupcakes around

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We had rounds of cheese with little bride and groom mice on top 🐭 it doubled up as evening buffet 2 savings in 1!

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

I paid £160 best cake I’d ever eaten 3 tier x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

270 i think ours was 3 tier and all different flavours that she (local) designed herself based on our cats living at home . You have to remember tho that you have pay for labour, design, materials so that all adds up and is why wedding cakes arent cheap

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

I had a semi naked wedding cake 3 tier with fresh flowers from florist £270 but hardly got eaten.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Our friend who has a cake business made our 4 tier gluten free wedding cake and it cost £120. Picture in comments

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

It really depends what
You are going for. There are much cheaper options if you are willing to compromise. My friend made out cakes and I paid her just for the cake tins and stuff she needed specifically for what I wanted. But labour was free. I had 2 cakes and a cheese tower as well on different height stands. My brother went to a wedding where he and a few other friends each made a different cake, which was nice because it was something personal and then people had a choice. So if you went for 3 individual cakes then might be cheaper. Our stands were actually flower pots which was cheaper than actual cake stands! Just some ideas

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Me and my mum made ours. It was a naked cake, which is what we wanted anyway, it wasn’t nearly as stressful as you might imagine either and saved us a fortune! X

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Check out local cake makers on fb rather than ones at wedding fares etc. We paid 1/4 of the price for ours and it was amazing

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

2 tier made of 3 cakes in each tier £100. Look for local cake makers they seem to be cheaper

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Mine was 150 for 3 tier sponge cake x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We had a 5 tier rounds of cheese and a 3 tiers pork pie cake from m and s xx

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We got our bottom tier from asda and I made the top tier and decorated it.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

I’m not gonna lie, it may just be easier to make and decorate your own. Or re-decorating a store bought cake.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

I'm in the same boat as you. Was quoted £170 for a two tier cake that feeds 40 guests. I still thought it was a bit much, especially since the top tier isnt cake but a rice crispy treat moulded into a campervan.
I know M&S discontinued their wedding cakes, but their other cakes look great and are very reasonably priced. They have a naked cake which can be an ideal wedding cake, you or a friend can decorate it yourself x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

£230 for a small top layer and 130 cupcakes with lots of different designs. They would have lent me the cake stands. They did some gluten free and some lemon and some chocolate cupcakes. They also delivered to the venue on the day and set it all up.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

M&S then decorate yourself that’s what I did x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

£170 for a 3 tier xx

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We’re paying £375 for a dessert platter which includes 2 3 tier cakes, 2 loaf cakes, blondies & brownies and will feed up to 170 people 😊

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We're getting wedding Connie and Colin from M&S
- We have a children's party theme (but no kids allowed)

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

M&S cakes. Decorations and a fancy stand from Ebay can look stunning and is one of the cheapest options x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We had 3 tiered cake and our cake lady charged us 170 which also included delivery to our venue for us and set up. It had 3 flavours- plain as the bottom tier then coffee flavoured tier and top tier was blueberries. We had a top hat and shoes as our cake toppers. We were extremely happy with it 😊 x

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Ours was £150. Simple chocolate and cherry rectangular cake. No tiers, no frills. Just some ganache, white writing and fruit for decoration. Simple, tasty, effective. Enough for 70 people even though we only have 50 coming. It's a local cake shop. Ask on your highstreet

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

My auntie made mine as a wedding gift.

However I Really liked the idea of using all the Mr kipling minis and making them on a tiered stand like batenburg and cherry bake Wells. My wedding was very British, in a beautiful English pub. But Honestly no one eats wedding cake and this way they can take things home in goody bags. Xx

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Buying a cheap top tier from m and s then buying doughnuts for 3 other tiers!

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Make it yourself..its not hard...and decorate with fresh flowers....the prices they charge are crazy

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Ours was £250 for 3 tier 3 flavours.

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

We had 4 tiers of different flavours (all edible, no pretend tiers), including delivery and decorations on the cake it cost £300 X

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

Waitrose. Cakes are delicious. £120 worth of cake fed 100 guests and we still had tiers left over

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

£450 3 tiers it really depends on the design, time & labour xxx

UKbride Member 16 Oct 2020

350 for 3 tiers to feed 90 people

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

Usually too much is spent on the wedding day the focus is the temple keeping simple

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

You don’t need to have a cake at all. Just a thought 💭

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

£200 for a 5 tiered flavoured cake decorated with flowers, macaroons and fresh fruits. That includes delivery to the venue too

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

I'm a professional cake maker, wedding cake prices can be anything from £100 - £5000 . I know that sounds ridiculous but it is dependent on so many factors. Design is a huge factor but also the skill involved in making the cake, the time to make it, materials, overheads as well as travel and set up to get it to the venue. Anyone selling cakes should also be registered with their local council and insured for Product and Public Liability.

If you're opting for a 7 tier opulent and intricately designed cake that is to be delivered 300 miles away, it will of course be more expensive than a two tier naked cake only going up the road. It's extremely difficult to compare prices without knowing all the background information and the design of the cake itself.

There are a lot of unregistered bakers who may only charge you to cover their costs (unregistered bakers legally cannot charge for their time or skills), but you then run the risk that they will be inexperienced, uninsured and should anything go wrong you will have a tough time to rectify any issues.

I hope this helps! 💜

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

Naked wedding cakes are a lot cheaper than fondant.

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

My auntie made mine, if you have any family or friends that can bake ask them, saves a lot of money 😊

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

195 for mine 3 tier with roses xxx

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

You can have a cupcake decoration competition. Buy plain cupcakes (or make them) and buy stuff you would like your cake to have, then, ask your guests to put them on a tier stand, and you can have the most thoughtful wedding cake. You can buy "love words" printed on edible paper so the guests can put on top of their cupcakes and all the sudden, you have an original wedding cake with lovely thoughts and sentiment

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

The plain ones from Marks are very nice n quite reasonable can then add your own touches

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

My best friend made mine and it was as beautiful as any professional cake, ask around your friends and family. Plus, the cake is not usually what you remember afterwards unless it's vitally important to you, I'd cut costs here and spend money on the things that you will never forget/just cannot go without. Good luck xxx

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

M&S do some affordable wedding cakes online X

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

You could get your mother in law to do it for free as a wedding gift. That’s what we are doing 😁xx

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

Get a small pretty one and then bars in the same flavours. It all gets chopped up anyway!! M&S are good

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

Mine is a two tier that's personalized for £150.

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

A girl quoted me £750!! And I’m getting the same cake and an extra tier for £200!! 👰🏼

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

We came away from. the traditional cake, we opted for a white castle with a Scottish theme and sugar paste figures of us and our Son and dog. Then a friend made cupcakes for us decorated with our colour theme and we had a cupcake tower. It was a beautiful set up x

UKbride Member 17 Oct 2020

I paid £355 for 8 layers in a custom design, 8 different flavours, including delivery and a topper. Shop at local delis, they tend to be much cheaper. My first quote was £980. X

UKbride Member 18 Oct 2020

I got mine from Marks and spencer 3 tier and I decorated it myself cost about £60. I had chocolate, sponge and fruit.

UKbride Member 18 Oct 2020

I think around £300. It was absolutely delicious and everyone raved about it so I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Thinking of asking her to do my 30th in the same flavours next year!

UKbride Member 19 Oct 2020

I'm lucky enough to have an awesome auntie who is making mine for the cost of the ingredients and the equipment- before she offered though I was looking at Marks and Spencer which seemed to be the cheapest or if you're having a fruit cake and you feel confident in your baking skills you could make it yourself months ahead of time. Good luck x

Ours is £400 for a 3 tier that feeds 80 people - included in our venue's wedding package. I also can't believe how much the wedding cake costs, we actually decided to pay only for a 2 course meal and have the cake as dessert to save a bit of money because otherwise the £400 cake is wasted and won't even get eaten!!!!
