Postponement due to Covid-19

Hello, I'm in the position of postponing my wedding set for the 29th May 2020. My question is had anyone been asked to increase their initial deposit in order to postpone their wedding? We have been asked to double our initial deposit or face the cancellation fee of 50% of the wedding cost. Any advice would be greatly appreciated x

Did you take our insurance? I genuinely think that's really bad considering it's not anyone fault for the cancellation!!!

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

I know 2 people that had to postpone and neither have been asked pay any additional costs

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We still have to adhere to the original full payment due date of the 27 April but ours is being moved from the 27 May to the 30 December.

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We postponed from 23rd may to the end of the year, because of the circumstances we have not been charged or asked to pay any more as it's no ones fault

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We have postponed our wedding. We were originally told it would be £30 (registry office) but when we rang to change they didn't charge us as it wasn't our fault we postponed

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

No. My venue just moved the date across at no extra cost. My wedding is actually now on a Sunday instead of a Saturday so works out abit cheaper now. Balance isn't due now untill closer to the new date.

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We had to postpone. We was due to get married next Thursday and have moved it to a Saturday in December. They haven’t even asked for us to pay the price difference from a Thursday to a Saturday. They transferred it all and the balance now isn’t due until November x

If you are postponing to a date in the next financial year or to a better day eg from a monday wedding to a saturday then there may be an increase in cost but if not then I dont think there should be anything extra on top x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

My wedding was supposed to be 31st May but we are postponing until next May, we have not been charged any extra xx

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

I was due to get married in May. Our venue moved the date no charge and moved the final payment date too

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Postponed mine from April to October with no additional fees x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We have postponed from 10th April, untill next year venue and all other suppliers have not asked for any more ...

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We were due May 2nd but had to pay 50% of final balance as we were posting x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We haven't been asked to pay anything more to postpone ours from May to September...

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

No charge to postpone ours xx

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

I would take a look at your venue contract. I’m pretty sure they can’t do that probably managing their cash flow to compensate. If there’s a force majeure clause they can’t ask for anything other than your terms xx

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

My wedding was suppose to be in May we postponed to next May but no we haven’t been charged anything extra and final payment isn’t till next year now also.

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Ours allowed to change date for no extra charge x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

There’s a petition running at present to stop venues for being able to charge people for being forced to cancel and have to pay cancellation charges to do so and then claim it through wedding insurance here. Unfortunately it looks like some venues are trying to benefit from the current situation 😔

Ive booked a backup date with my venue and all our vendors. No one is asking for any more and are all honouring our initial deposit payment. I find that shocking what your venue is expecting of you and also a bit disgusting considering this isnt your fault. Id call citizens advice. That's what we were ready to do but thankfully we've dead on vendors and all were able to accommodate us.

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We moved ours from May to September, venue made us pay the balance before they would move the date x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We were suppose to get married last friday. Our venue just moved everything straight across for us at no extra cost to August......I would argue it as it's not your fault (unless of course you have decided to move it then that may be different) xx

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We’ve moved ours from 30th May to 24th April 2021. Originally they said we would have to pay 75% cancellation fee on top of paying for a new date but we spoke to them again last Monday and now we aren’t being charged a fee x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

I dont see how they can honor the booking, so they have to cancel or postpone as much as you surely! X

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Outs was tescedulr or refund they cannot ask you for more

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

My wedding was meant to be in May but now postponed to sept. Was ask to pay off the bulk of the bill to secure the date, not too bothered about paying it now as it was meant to be due in the next 4 wks anyway.

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We're postponing but all our suppliers are letting us do so without losing anything already paid or additional costs

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Just tell them you are not cancelling and you will hold your wedding at the venue on the original date. They will not be able to do it, as no doubt situation will still not be back to normal so soon. They will have to cancel it themselves. And then they will have to give you the money back.

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

No I was able to postpone mine which was at beginning of June, but they didn’t ask for a higher deposit, maybe just speak to them again as it’s not your fault you’ve had to postpone, I’ve been able to move all my stuff to November without any additional costs.

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Iv had to postpone from July to June next year and they have just moved it no extra Costs and moved the payment final date to end of May 😊 xx

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

I'm supposed to be getting married in July and have made a back up date for next year with all our vendors. Our venue has however said the deposit will not be taken off the final bill if we have to rearrange to next year which is a little unfair. I haven't questioned it yet. All the other vendors have been very supportive. X

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Erm no this is terrible we was ment to get married in June now we postponed it till March next yr ur deposit secures ur date so u don’t need to paye any more money for that

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

That was suppose to by our wedding date too 😭 not heard anything about money yet but we have moved to the 7th August
Good luck x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We have postponed from this June until June next year and haven’t had to pay anything extra with the venue or our suppliers - everyone has been amazing xxx

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

name and shame!!!!!

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Mine was ment to be on the 23rd May, I emailed/rang all my suppliers and venues and there all letting us move our deposit forward for next year, they've all been really good!

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

we’ve postponed from may 30th 2020 to may 1st 2021 and haven’t been asked for us to increase the deposit in fact we were told if we keep the booing with them for next year then they will know 25% off final bill x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Hello Everyone, thankyou for all your responses.
The venue's position is that they will be able to go ahead with the wedding reception on the 29th (as the government is meant to review this every 3 weeks) so if we wish to postpone we need to double our deposit so secure another date.
The venue stated in an email correspondence that they are charging this rate as other venues are making couples postpone to out of season weddings or mid week weddings - we haven't even put forward potential new dates at this point. However, I can see from your comments this is far from the case.
We have wedding insurance but it has a clause regarding government banning gathering.
The venue only had a cancellation clause in our terms and conditions, so is really pressing that clause to put pressure on us to pay an increased deposit.
All our other suppliers have been so supportive and helpful. X

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

i think that's unfair, these are extraordinary circumstances, no one would have seen this coming

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Just leave it....then they will be forced to cancel and give you a full refund. I'd then give my money to someone else....cheeky f***ers !

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

We've been asked to pay the remaining amount, as per contract, as though we were still getting married 1st May 2020 to avoid price hike of postponement to May 2021.

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Our wedding day was supposed to be 29th May too 💔. Our venue and suppliers moved our booking without any cost - the venue in particular were amazing sending every single date they had for the rest of the year. Seems really unfair to ask for money given the circumstances x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

That's really mean ,have you got insurance and I'm pretty sure its upto them to postpone the wedding due to closure and their own insurance should be covering this x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

I postponed mine from 22nd May until July, my venue and registrar moved it with no costs however if I decide to postpone it again then I have to pay the registry and notice due to it being out of date.

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

My wedding was 25th April 2020, we have now moved ours to 19th September 2020, all our vendors including the venue were great and really accommodating we have not had to pay any extra fees to move the date xx

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Trevelyan Dyer worth a read with your situation x

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

That's really poor form! I'm a supplier and have asked for nothing extra for postponements to next year. The situation is nobody's fault, so why should anyone be penalised?

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

That's disgusting of the venue at a time when we are all meant to be pulling together. I would say OK I won't move. It but when we can't go ahead I will be requesting a refund and changing my venue as I'm really upset at how you are handling things. Xxx

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

Are any of your guests being forced to self isolate for 12 weeks?? Half my sisters wedding party was having to self. Isolate so she had to move to next year so maybe that's worth mentioning to them to? Xxx

UKbride Member 30 Mar 2020

I run a small Catering company and whilst we have not ask for further deposits to postpone or held onto deposits for cancellations I am not surprised that some companies have. It is a real struggle for anyone in the events industry. We should be gearing up for our busiest time of year and yet we are now faced with having no income at all during this time. If they are still honouring your booking on a different date I wouldn’t worry too much.

UKbride Member 31 Mar 2020

You shouldn’t lose any money, you are not cancelling or postponing through choice, they are telling you that you have to do you should not pay anymore or lose out

UKbride Member 31 Mar 2020

We had to pay an additional deposit for the venue but lost no money. Our photographer and cake were both offers we booked and need to be paid up on the original dates set. I know its going to be tough for them to stay afloat so don't have an issue doing this if they are still going at the end of the madness xx

UKbride Member 31 Mar 2020

Most venues would move at no additional cost, that’s what the venue I work for has done. The other thing to consider is if they are asking for more of a deposit but freezing the total cost? If so that’s not so bad, the venue is just protecting itself and in the end you won’t pay anymore. 🙂

UKbride Member 31 Mar 2020

We were meant to be getting married in September but thought it best to postpone. We have now moved it to next June. Our venue is allowing everyone to choose a new date with no extra charge.

UKbride Member 1 Apr 2020

Was meant to be our date too 😪😪

UKbride Member 4 Apr 2020

I’m not altering my standard contract for any change of date and am keeping any existing booking fee paid without increasing it
