DIY Hair and Make-up

Has anyone regretted doing their own hair and make up on their wedding day? Or is anyone planning to do their own? I've had some trials and a couple of goes at doing my own at home and I'm fairly confident but everyone keeps telling me I'll be a nervous wreck on the morning and I shouldn't bother with the extra stress!

I didn’t gave a make up artist I went to several male up counters before the wedding to get tips x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I would definitely leave it to the professionals, you want to be able to relax and not think about making sure everything is perfect, they will have done it so many times before they will know the timings off by heart

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

Myself and my sister did for her wedding. We did the bobbi brown bridal make up class before hand, which i would recommend!

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I am no good at hair and makeup but if you are good at it - go for it. It will be more relaxing than worrying about somebody else getting it right.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I thought about doing my own make up as I struggled as well but I found someone and I'm so glad I did as there is no way I could have done it on the day x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own make up and went to several trials before hand in boots and Debenhams to learn skills x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I am capable of doing my own but on my wedding day I want to be treated and I also don’t want the pressure of it going wrong 😂😂 I can sit back, drink Prosecco and enjoy the getting ready process then (hopefully 😁)

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own makeup and used tester pots to help get the perfect finish I always wanted a more natural look so was easy and stress free x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own makeup with a little help from my sister in law and niece and had a friend do my hair and was very happy with it, it saved us a small fortune and I felt more "me" which was nice x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

Iv got my friend who cuts my hair doing my hair on my big day. Also my best friends sister doing my makeup as she very good at it and keeping the cost down. Sometimes its who u know as some places will cost a fortune plus travel expenses

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I had mine done by a professional and hated it. The makeup she did was fine but didn’t suit my face at all. She enhanced the features that I hate and did subtle make up on the features that I like best. I have very small eye area and I like to do my eye make up a certain way and she did the complete opposite .. the point I’m making is that you know your face and your style better than anybody and if you think you could do a better job yourself then go for it!! Xxx

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I'm getting married july 11th and dont want to do it myself it's my wedding day I want to be pampered lol also have 5 bridesmaids that need done too lol

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I done my own for my first wedding. It was fine and I was happy with it. It was an extra stress on the day though. Also done it when I was bridesmaid for a friend and I was really pleased with it then but, again, the same with the extra stress on the day. I've had trials for my wedding this time and they are just that bit better and it'll be nice to relax and be pampered and not worry about it going wrong.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own make-up & didn’t regret it at all - I also did a few trials & lessons at counters, and had a few practice runs. I felt much more relaxed doing it myself as I knew I would have it exactly as I wanted, & found it quite a nice bit of quiet time to sit down & do my make up on the morning of the wedding.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I would also recommend to leave it to the professionals. Bridal make up is more than a nice look, you need the skill to make it stay all day and night and very good quality of products as well..

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own make up but that's as I wanted a natural look. I didn't find it stressful at all.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I didn't do my own hair and make up because I too thought I'd be a nervous wreck (I stress out at every little thing normally, including the wedding planning) but on the day I was so calm! Even I thought I'd be stressed but not a moment of stress at any point! I don't think I've ever been so calm!
You can practice as many times as you like if you do your own makeup, in hindsight I probably could have done my own but it was nice to be pampered for one day ☺ X

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

Did my own makeup as I know my face best. But as I'm useless with hair I went to my friend at her salon. Nothing wrong with getting a trial for either and making an informed decision.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I had mine done and although I think I’m ok at doing my make up I’m not at the level my mua was. Also it lasted all day and night which when I do my own it doesn’t last as well. Well worth it for me! have trials and make sure they know what you want on the day. When I went for my trial they wrote everything down on a little blank face and took pictures to check back against on the day.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

It depends how confident you are. I did my own hair and makeup - check profile pic. I also done my bridesmaids hairs too and to be honest if relaxed me more because I was content with getting ready not focusing on the big day! Xx

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I am planning to do my own hair and makeup with the help of my sisters, as I don't feel comfortable with the thought of someone I don't know going so close to my eyes ( sounds ridiculous I know)

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I got mine done professional both hair and make up and gad trials before and discussed what i like and didn't etc. Its your special day so i would enjoy getting pampered and chill out with a wee champers calm the nerves x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own makeup. The thought of someone else plastering makeup on me would have made me feel awful on the day. Wanted to keep mine light and fairly natural. My hair was minimal fuss too but I did have a family member do it who is my hairdresser too. However, if she wasnt free to do it then i was happy to do it myself.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I'm having someone do my hair but doing own make up, but only because I know how I like my make up. After a few trials my make up is being kept fresh and neutral

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I regretted not doing my own. I spent hundreds on my makeup artist, though it was good, it wasnt how I wore makeup and felt unhappy on the day. I love doing make up myself and wished id gone with my gut of doing it myself!

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own makeup and loved. One of my bridesmaids did my hair and between me and her we did all other bridesmaids and hair. I loved it and so glad i did it did not feel stressful on day at all i was totally relaxed with it xx

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I’m doing my own as I can’t afford hair and make up so I’m just paying for hair. I don’t do too bad and have learnt a lot from you tube

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

Didnt do my own hair but then again I saved over a year to have a professional hairdresser to do it and got my daughter to do my makeup as yes you are stressed enough without worrying about these things x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I'm doing my own make up cos I've been doing it for the last 27years I know my face and I know what make up looks best!! But my hair I'm having done at the hairdressers for sure! I think you do whatever you feel is best for you x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I’m doing my own makeup. I’ve had makeup done before and I didn’t like it. I’m just going to invest in some really good makeup and practice different YouTube trials. My brother-in-law2b’s girlfriend is doing my hair because I can’t do hair to save my life! Xx

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

No not at all ,my bridesmaid is a hairdresser so just pinned it simply and I did makeup but even if not I would have , not worth spending hundreds spend it on your honeymoon or something else I've never regretted it

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own hair and make up because I couldnt afford to have someone and because I like how I do my own makeup. I didnt regret it. I did just straighten my hair though. I wouldnt have been able to knock together an up do or curls myself

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I don't regret doing my own make up, I just wanted to look like me so didn't see the point in paying someone to do exactly what I do. But hair, yes! Wish I'd had someone do my hair, it looked nice, just not as nice as it could of! X

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

As a hairdresser I’m doing my own Barnet, purely because I don’t trust anyone else to do it the way I want it🙈
I have plenty of time to practice, and I’m sure with a bit of help from mr Prosecco itl be fine 😂😂

I am having a MUA to do my face xx

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I did my own makeup and was totally happy with it! It was actually a good moment to relax and focus on something else for 5 min 😂 xx

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I had my hair done the day before, highlights and curled and it kept okay for wedding and my friend did my make up for me. Wanted to look like me not have a complete transformation that I wouldn't recognise.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I’m having a professional do both my hair and make up.....but only because I’m useless at both lol... my problem is I don’t like people touching my face but the person I’m booked in with has done it a few times and she always does my nails so I trust her completely x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

If you’re happy with how it looks then go for it, leave yourself plenty of time in the morning so you’re not rushing and it could very well be therapeutic! Me personally I love having other people do my hair and makeup because I just stress myself out 😂 but if you enjoy doing it then definitely go for it! Great way to save money 👍🏻

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I have booked MUA and hairdresser combined to do mine. Had a trial and it was amazing. Even though I'm pretty good at doing my own make up my Fiance wanted me to be pampered. Deffo wouldn't do my own hair xx

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

Im having my hair done by sis in law she hairdresser but doing own make up only prob is we get married at 10.45 early night for me

Always preference to have my hair done for wedding whether bride or guest. If having makeup done I advice a trial first

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

My future wife is really good at make up and researching the best brands for each product so she has bought us all new stuff for roughly £200 but with 2 brides that's cheaper than make up artists plus we get to keep it after

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I was lucky enough to have my eldest daughter doing my hair and make-up, and was over the moon with the result.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I had a makeup/hair person and we shared the make up. I don’t think anyone can put make-up on better than yourself. I’m not into looking completely false, too much make-up, false eye lashes look. I wanted to look natural and like me, but having someone to help do bits was really good x

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I can't find anyone that will do myself and my 11 year old / 6 & 2 year old bit of lippy if they want it for less than £300 so I'm having to do my own. Not worried about the kids but mine I'm useless with hair :(

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

I had a very low key wedding so did my own hair and make up. Loved it! Very natural as I wanted and still looked like me, not an airbrushed version of me.

UKbride Member 27 Jan 2020

To be honest, for me, taking that half hour out to do my makeup actually helped with the stress levels. It gave me a chance to breathe. And av a little bit of me time amongst the madness. And definitely don't regret it. x

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

If your happy with your ability to do your makeup then go ahead and do your own . If your not entirely confident maybe try a few makeup artists and see if you like them .

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

I'm not worried about makeup, it's hair that I think I need to get style professionally. I'd never be able to do any of the hair dos I like. Makeup I don't like to over do and would worry a makeup artist would put too much on and I wouldn't look like me. I'm just intending buying more expensive waterproof makeup and a setting spray so it doesn't run. If you like how you do your makeup already, just give yourself plenty of time to do it.

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

Ignore them and you do you 🥰

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

I went to some friends weddings last year and the year before, both did their own make up how they liked to have it but they did have someone do their hair because they didn’t want the stress of doing it wrong or running out of time before they had to go

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

I had a hairdresser friend do my hair but did my own make up. I'm not a big make up person and all the ones in our area were the fake eyelashes, contouring type...just wasn't me and saw no point walking down the aisle looking nothing like the woman he proposed to so i did my own and he still says it's the most beautiful I've ever looked ☺️

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

I did my own hair and makeup! I just made sure I had plenty of time on the day but it all went really well!

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

I had to do mine on my wedding day after a friend bailed 2 days before, so my wedding day was the second time I’d applied full makeup to my face 🤣 I just kept it simple curled my hair and looked a lot like me on my wedding day. Yes the fancy new hair do I had planned and better makeup outcome would’ve been nice but I’m happy I managed and look like me in my wedding photos. I can recreate the magic any time I want 🥰

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

Makeup is a very personal thing and I would go woth what ever you feel comfortable with but I think your hair, even if is just washed and styled rather than an up do is always nicer when someone else does it for you. It's a relaxing hour for you to sit maybe enjoy a glass of fizz and it will last you much longer if done professionally xx

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

I was planning on doing my make up myself, I can't do my own hair for buttons haha. My friend who is an MUA told me she's doing it and I can stop being silly haha. I was shocked, she lives like 4-5hrs away and she came up for trials and everything before hand to make sure it was all perfect.

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

It's not the same, but I got my hair and makeup done from a salon for my leaver's ball from school a good few years ago now and it was the most stressful experience of my life! She put thick dark blue sparkly eye-shadow from my eye-lids all the way to my brows and I was devastated, as I had this idea of what I'd look like and I didn't expect to look like I'd been punched in the face!! After that experience, I will definitely be doing my own makeup for my wedding: only you know how you like it done and what suits you and if you've practiced enough it'll be come second-nature anyway! Good luck and have a lovely wedding ☺️❤️

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

My makeup artist was unexpectedly unavailable (had to start her maternity leave early) and the girl the salon hired to replace her at one week's notice was clearly amateur... My maid of honour ended up having to fix what she had done and most of my bridesmaids redid their own. The hair was good though, but as for the makeup... I wish I'd just stuck to my guns and done my own in the first place. Or booked it well in advance so I could find one I could trust (I only booked 2 months in advance and was "lucky" to find an artist available)

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

Hello! As with anything wedding-related, doing your own makeup just takes careful planning and a little practice to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible on the big day.
It could be a little nerve-wracking to create your own wedding day beauty look, but also no one knows more about your contours, your skin texture or how makeup tends to settle on your face like you do.

UKbride Member 28 Jan 2020

So in your Mind wat look would u like ?
I was a hairdresser and done makeup but on the day I wanted the stress taken away and wanted my make looking awesome 😎
I had a trail which I loved and my bridesmaids showed her pictures they looked amazing x

UKbride Member 29 Jan 2020

i had my hair done for me but i did my own makeup, i wanted it to look just right an no one knows better than your self x

UKbride Member 29 Jan 2020

I had mine done but I wasn’t a nervous wreck in the morning, I was the calmest I have ever been. X

UKbride Member 30 Jan 2020

I was planning on doing my own makeup but can’t do hair for the life of me, I did end up getting someone to do both for me and honestly I’m so glad I did, I was lovely and calm on my wedding day even though a few things went a bit wrong and it really helped having a lovely calm morning! There was no running around being crazy it was just pure calm, I had time for a good breakfast and everything!
