Dress shopping as a petite bride?!

I was wondering if there are any particularly petite brides, under 5 feet, who can share their experiences with finding a dress? Was it easy enough to have your gown altered down enough, were there any dresses you were told couldn’t be altered for your height, or has anyone gone down the route of having one made because nothing fit quite right? I’ve not tried any on yet because it’s an experience I’m dreading as I’m so small and clothes shopping has always been frustrating but it would be really nice to hear your experiences so I can have a better idea of what to expect! Thank you so much!

I’m 5’3, just got a normal dress made for me in a size 8 and had an appointment the other day where the seamstress pinned the dress so it would be the right length for me, she is altering it now and will be ready for me in a few weeks time 🙂 it was miles too long at first x

4ft 10, found a perfect seamstress to alter mine.
Was perfect in the body just too long which was no problem for her x

I’m 4’11” and some dresses were off limits. Things that have detail on the end. Fish tail is doable but very tricky so better to find a retailer who will alter your dress at a fixed price as they would need to unstitch the tail and take up the main part of the dress which independent seamstresses were quoting me £550 for alone.

I'm 4ft 11 and a half and went for a dress that can be altered to floor length. Not married yet so can't explain too much lol but happy to be inboxed for more details :). Had my first fitting and it needs to be taken up quite a bit but didnt have any issues and was not told I couldn't wear a certain style because of my height! I worried about this too but it was fine. The dress shop I've got my dress from has alterations included in the price of the dress too!

To be honest I'm 4ft 11 and I bought mine online i fell in love with it just needed it shortened a bit it was perfect xx

I’m 5ft 2 and ordered my dress in the shortness length they do and it is actually almost perfect so I will only be able to have a little heel on the day. I would recommend ordering the shortness length and then a seamstress could alter the length from there. Good luck in finding your dress 😁

I’m 5ft and I never had a problem trying full length dresses on. I was pinned into them to show more of how it was fit and I had some length taken off the bottom. My dress was lace so my seamstress kept the detail and sewed it back on c

I’m 4ft 10 had 3 alterations and was perfect

I’m just over 5ft but had to have alterations made on the shoulders and length of my dress! It really helped having a dress with no lace trim around the bottom because it made that a lot simpler especially as my skirt had loads of layers!

I'm 5ft and never had any problems. I ended up with a lace mermaid/fit and flare gown.
The seamstress took about 6 inches off the bottom to make it fit but worked absolutely fine.

Im 4’11” and ended up buying a made-to-measure dress from an online shop, but tried on a lot in boutiques to find the style that suited me and never had any issues. It is difficult sometimes to picture how a dress would look when it’s altered to your measurements but every shop I went to had really knowledgable staff that showed me how different parts of each dress would fit on my body.

I'm 5"1 so just a tiny bit above that. I never got told anything I tried on couldn't be altered however in the end I picked a ballerina length dress and had 2 inches added to the length which made it a full length dress on me.

I'm 4ft 11 and I bought a bridesmaids dress from my local shop as traditional bridal dresses drowned me and were too heavy (getting married in summer and didn't want to be hot). I wouldn't advise a fishtail as fittings can get expensive here. But you can go for any style other than that. Mine is an empire line simple dress and the same shop does the fittings. I'm also curvy on top of my height and had to order a few sizes up to have plenty to work with. Good luck!

I had mine made bespoke but nearly all wedding dresses are too long and will need to be shortened standard length is for 5 ft 8 tall people!

I have the opposite problem - Morilee dresses (which are beautiful) only size up to 5’9” length wise. Being 5’10 and a bit this immediately put them off limits. I don’t know how short they stock but may be worth having a chat with a local supplier

If your wanting something very fitted go for made to measure as it might end up being cheaper in the long run. If your looking at big dresses you can buy one and get that altered easier. I would go for one with les underskirts as they would have or alter all the skirts which they might charge extra for . Maybe go for a train as you might not need as much alterations then.

I'm 4' 9.5" and had no problems whatsoever. It's possible they didn't show me anything that couldn't be altered, but given my budget and style, I think she showed me pretty much everything.

im having mine made for me here in Dubai. My dress, my size. I'm 5' and quite petite

UKbride Member 14 Jan 2020

My mom is 4ft 11 and she bought her dress from a normal bridal shop and had it altered by their seamstress. I’m 5ft 2 and did the same

UKbride Member 14 Jan 2020

I am 5ft 1 and the only one I couldn’t try on was the sample sale one as they said it needed to be ordered in a shorter length it was a stripy Mori lee fishtail with ruffled layered over skirt

UKbride Member 14 Jan 2020

I am 4ft 10 and I got a normally length gown but had it altered. The wedding dress shop I bought the dress from gave me a list of local seamstresses and my dress fit perfectly on the day. Its finding the right seamstresses that gets your vision of how you want to look on your big day. Lots of wedding dress shops do petite sizes though too So shop around. Good luck. My dress was from Stockport Wedding Dress Outlet. 🤗

I’m 5ft 1, the only dress I had issues with was one with a tulle skirt, that had a lace layer around the bottom edge. They said it would have to be unpicked and then cut and then restitched and that would get costly but could still be done.

UKbride Member 14 Jan 2020

I'm about 5ft and I bought a normal dress and had it altered (very patient seamstress who took up all 12 layers of skirt and petticoat). Use local Facebook pages or word of mouth to find a reliable seamstress - mine gave me all the offcuts of fabric in case I ever found a use for them!

UKbride Member 14 Jan 2020

I’m 5’1 and found stuff easily that looked lovely. My dress needs about 14 inches off but it looks fab otherwise! Good luck

UKbride Member 14 Jan 2020

I’m 4’5 and the experience for me was amazing. I went to Ava Rose Hamilton in Colne (the shop doing say yes to the dress) and they were really understanding. Don’t let past experiences in shops stop you. The people who work in these places are absolute experts. I would suggest going to a shop that has an in house alterations

UKbride Member 14 Jan 2020

4ft 11 no problems unless you pick a dress with a lot of detail on the bottom x

UKbride Member 15 Jan 2020

I'm sure you'll find just the right dress and you'll look absolutely beautiful. When is the big day. So happy for you xo

UKbride Member 15 Jan 2020

My cousin is about 4 foot 4. Good job I'm a seemstress. Lol.xx
