MEMBERREQUEST As we cannot legally get married outside in this country we are having to get married in a registry office the day before and have a blessing in my mum's back garden the next day (I've always wanted to get married outside) . Has anyone ever done this and if so what did you do in terms of a script for the blessing?

As far as I’m aware you can have your ceremony outside and sign the licence indoors

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

I didn't know you couldn't get married outside.... why is that?

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

You can have the ceremony outdoors and legally sign the license inside. We was offered this at a venue we looked at previously

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

We got married outside and signed the register outside too!

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

Currently the register needs to be signed under a permanent structure. Some venues do allow for outdoor weddings if they have a permanent gazebo or such like. Worth looking around.

In the UK, marriage ceremonies are legally meant to be under a structure. My cousin got married outside but had to stand inside a little hut that the venue had purpose built for wedding ceremonies. I believe it has to be a permanent structure of some kind too, so you can’t just put up a tent and then do it there.

I'm having mine at a barn so wedding outside you then go inside to sign x

If you don't mind travelling you can get married outside in Scotland.

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

I've seen people have handfasting ceremonies outdoors, didn't know this wasn't legal. I am in Scotland though so it's maybe different here? Xxx

You can on Bournemouth beach 🏖

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

You can get married outside just has to be under a permanent structure. Weather permitting were getting married outside under a small wooden structure x

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

We got married outside under a permanent wooden gazebo

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

Sonja Lanchbury you did something similar didnt you xx

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

I shot an outside wedding at Knebworth House so you absolutely can get married outside. As others have said, you just sign the register under a permanent structure.

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

Yes we did!!

I basically copied the standard English ceremony, it was basically identical 🙂

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

We are doing something similar but luckily my cousin is a celebrant so she will perform our non legal ceremony.
You can hire celebrants to help you plan your blessing.

I got married outside at Ferrari's country house. X

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

I had a wondering ceremony outside I can email it across if you like it was personalised and had the odd element of being religious. We did it last October

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

Iirc you can be married outdoors if it’s a religious ceremony but not a civil one. (At least in Scotland)

We did this, we legally got married on the Wednesday with just our best man and maid of honour there as we didn’t want to see it as our wedding, we called it our ‘paper day’ then we had a whole wedding and reception at a beautiful outdoor venue and got married on a hill overlooking the cutest little village on the Saturday . We had a very personalised wedding script that our best man and maid of honour delivered as we thought who better to marry us than the people who knew us best. I googled it and wrote it all up with slight changes to personalise it to us. X

Depending where u are some areas do have a outdoor venue area. Some venues near us have 2 places u can get married indoors and outdoors

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

We did this . Had a registry office on thursday and then are wedding on the saturday outdoors. We had are blessing read by our fathers and incorporated the father of the bride speech into this as we wernt having other speeches on the day. We then read are own vows.

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

You want a celebrant for the outside bit. They will make it the best ceremony ever. My favourite is Starr Gazing Ceremonies who does the most awesome personalised ceremonies you could ask for.

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

Some certain places do the wedding outside then signing of the register inside. If this is something you would like to do, ask your registry office about places you can do this x

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

Just use a humanist

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

You can get married outside in the UK, as we are. You just need to ensure that your chosen venue is licensed for outdoor weddings. Our venue has a lisenced pagoda

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

We did the same, married legally in reg office with just witnesses, then big white wedding in back garden on our farm. Got a celebrant in to perform ceremony & wrote the whole blessings/vows ourselves. Was perfect ❤️

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

We did exactly this, we actually got married about 2 months before our 'wedding' we had a hand tying ceremony that my twin sister lead ( as it didn't need to be legal) so it was very special.

We still wrote our own vows, it's just for show so we went all out. X

My ceremoney was outdoors, it is legal but there is laws that if there is an outside area there must also be space indoors in case of bad weather they would then make decision on the morning of wedding if it needs to be indoors. It cost us more to have it outside and there is a risk it might not happen with English weather.

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

You can have the ceremony outside provided that official proceedings are in a permanent structure that is registered for weddings. We had our ceremony outside on the terrace of a country house but had to sign the register and do all the legal parts inside. So basically we had our ceremony, then went inside with our witnesses for the legal part while guests stayed outside with some music playing and chatted amongst themselves. We then came back out of the building and the registrar finished the ceremony off to say we are now legally married.

You can find details of local celebrants through the Celebrant Directory

I really don’t see why people can’t get married outdoors, as long as there’s a licensed person doing the ceremony and a marriage certificate...what’s the problem??

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

Get married in Scotland. You can get married outside there!!! X

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

We are getting married in a registry office but having a blessing ceremony 2 days later in my friend's apple orchard

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

How primitive. A big percentage of Aussie weddings are outside, including our daughter Megan's approaching wedding

UKbride Member 9 Jan 2020

We did something similar but had 2 close friend do the ceremony. We followed a humanist ceremony structure, it was amazing!

UKbride Member 10 Jan 2020

Yes, we have White Rose Ceremonies - Wedding Celebrant & Planner doing ours. They give you script options to choose from:)

UKbride Member 10 Jan 2020

They are reviewing wedding laws so the rules around where you can get married may be changing soon

UKbride Member 10 Jan 2020

My friends got married in a registory office and then asked me to perform the outside ceremony two days after. I'd never done anything like that before so I just wrote them a really personalised speach kind of thing about love and then I done a handfasting and bought them a broom to jump. It was all conducted at sunrise on a field/cliff overlooking the sea in Anglesey. It was so beautiful and personal. 😊

UKbride Member 10 Jan 2020

Me and my H2B are getting married in a woods! And know we have to go to a registry first!
We got in contact with a celebrant to do our ceremony.

UKbride Member 10 Jan 2020

You can legally get married outside in the UK as long as it is under a fixed archway which is registered for marriages and is conducted by a proper registrar. There is a list online in the government website with locations that are registered for legal outdoor marriages. https://www.hitched.co.uk/wedding-planning/ceremony-and-reception/perfect-venues-for-your-outdoor-wedding-ceremony/

UKbride Member 12 Jan 2020

I'm getting married outside. We're going to a registry office the day before to do all the legal paperwork etc. then our actual wedding will be conducted by a celebrant the next day. Easy to do x

UKbride Member 12 Jan 2020

You CAN get married outside legally in the UK. (Registrar and everything) It’s just the venue’s outside area must be licensed to hold ceremonies. There aren’t too many venues which do this, but you can find them on “hitched” website I think and filter the venues that hold outside ceremonies.
