I would work backwards. How many weeks before the event to you have to finalise numbers with your venue? 4 weeks? Then you need at least two weeks before that so that you can chase people up if necessary which would mean 6 weeks at least. On our invitations we asked for replies by 8 weeks before. There were still a few maybes from people overseas trying to get flights etc but we managed.
