Hi bride to be's! I'm going wedding dress shopping end of the month for the first time ever, so feeling very excited/nervous all at the same time! I've basically found a dress that I absolutely love, and after ages looking finally found a bridal shop that stocks a sample (a 2 and a half hour journey but hey ho!) I called to ask about it and the lady said it's a size 8 sample - I'm a size 12/14! It's quite a fitted dress anyway so I already know that it probably won't look that great on me (if I can even get it on!) The lady said it should be okay since it's made of quite elasticated material inside the dress but that doesn't make me feel much better! Has anyone else a bit curvier tried a dress that's multiple sizes too small before or have any experience in this at all - so nervous and don't want to just not bother with my dream dress because of the sample! Thank you!

Hi, I tried a dress that was 2 sizes smaller than me was a corset style dress so some give anyway. It is the only dress I have fallen in love with... didn't want to take it off! Hope this helps x

When you try on dresses they normally tell you to go for the size up because they’re small. I tried to try on a few my own size and small and they wouldn’t go over me but everyone is different, also I went into dress shopping thinking I knew exactly what I want, come out and changed my mind completely x

I’m not sure about weather it would fit or not, but I’m also. 12/14 and chose my dress in the shop and then they’ve made it using my measurements. Based on my measurements the owner used a wedding dress sizing guide and the size she’s ordered is actually a 16 in wedding dress size as they are usually smaller. The one I tried in the shop was. 14 and yet it was too small but I buy a size 12 on the bottom and 14 on the top for bust. So I understood why she did this. Saying that, If it’s stretchy then never say never! Personally I’d be a bit worried about how flattering it would be being several sizes too small, but you can only go and try it you might be surprised, congratulations and happy wedding dress shopping

I am a size 20 normally and dress I picked was small sizing and had to get a 28

The bridal shop I went to only stocks sample sizes. They can still tie them up and slot in a back piece for you to get the general idea. The sample of the dress I bought was a few dress sizes too small when I tried it on but could still get a good idea so I ordered it to be made.

Hi, I tried on lots of dresses in smaller sizes and the fitter did an amazing job of putting in panels at the back and letting the Material hang enough for me to see what it would look like in my true size. Sometimes it can be hard to imagine what it would be like fitted properly but it’s also hard to try on all the dresses you want in your size, try and keep an open mind. I was absolutely dreading doing wedding dress shopping but ended up loving it all because of the shop owners and their customer service - they really do make the day for you. Good luck xx

They'll make it go on for you to get an idea. Bridal shop ladies are very clever at what they do & they know we're not all stick insects. Just go with an open mind a sense of humor and good underwear!!! Xxx

You have to go up 2 sizes in bridal. Sounds like she's just trying to get you in the door

I tried a size 8 fishtail on and I’m a 12. It was hilarious as they couldn’t get it off but it did go on and I could imagine it.
It’s very strange as I heard you go up sizes in wedding dresses but the one I bought they ordered in a 10 (I’m 12) and it fit perfectly.
You’ll probably get something else anyway it’s unlikely what you think you want it what you end up with! Xx

Hello, my dream dress was wayyyyy too small in the shop, but the ladies in there were amazing and pinned me into it with extra material so I could see what it would look like done up! I went ahead and bought it and went back last week to try my dress on and it’s even more perfect than I ever imagined! I say go try it on as even without it fitting perfectly you should be able to get a good idea of what it’ll look like! Good luck! Xx

They have ways of making things fit, don't stress. You'll get an overview of how it'll look

I tried on my dress was 3 sizes smaller than my normal size the ladies put a panel in the back and pinned it to give me an idea of wat the dress would look like .... these women in the bridal shops know wat they are doing so trust them when they say they’ll get u in the dress coz they will x

I got measured at a size 26 and tried a size 14 on in the shop and picked that dress. I fell in love with the dress and how it looked and felt. Yes obviously it was far too small but I didn't care. I have lost weight since then and have just picked my dress up from alterations and I couldn't be happier. Good luck in your experience xx

It’s very frustrating that a lot of stores only stock smaller sample sizes. Surely it would be easier to go with a mid range size that can be clipped together for size 8 ladies and give a better idea of what it will look like on larger ones.

Bridal comes up smaller than your actual dress size... I was mortified when a dress in my size did not fit....trying squeeze in something smaller makes you feel rubbish!! If go to a reputable shop show them the style you like they will find something simlar.....also what i had in my head is the complete opposite tp whay i purchased the ladies at wed2be were amazing!! Good luck xx

I was forced into a dress 2 sizes smaller than i 2as (so between 3 and 4 given how small bridalwear is) and couldnt even move my legs to walk and ended up uo with huge red marks all over my legs. I was so embarrassed as they made me go out in the dress that i walked out in floods of tears. I definitely would not recommend it and in all honesty, any bridal store with a good reputation should not be allowing you to try on never mind trying to sell you a dress that doesn't currently fit you (again just what i found after going to an independent retailer who tried to sell me 4 different dresses in 4 different sizes and then each of the other stores i went to had a policy that they wouldnt sell you a dress that was so small you couldnt have it altered)

Go and look at the dress! No it’s not going to fit but if you 100% love it then you can order one in your size.

I did the same I found 2 dresses I absolutely loved and then found a stock list of them went to try them on the one I liked the most just wasn’t right on me and I ended up trying on 7 in total all different styles turned out my second choice was perfect a little large I’m a size 10 and very short so out of the 7 none fitted some were too big some too small all of them way too long but it was great trying on all the styles to see what suited me most and I the dress I got you just know it’s a bit like falling in love you just know .

I'd personally go try other dresses on first or at least one similar in your size. If you've never been dress shopping before you might find what you didn't think suits will be perfect and vice versa xx

Sorry but it definitely sounds like she’s just trying to get you in the door to try other dresses on or order without trying on as you already love it. Bridal often runs 2 sizes smaller, saying you’d fit in an 8 is a bit naughty. Hope you don’t end up disappointed x

Well my dress is a size 10 and I am a size 12 and it’s still bloody massive on me. So will need to have it taken in a fair bit. So you may be alright with the size. X

I went dress shopping the other day. I managed to fit into dresses a size too small for me but most of the dresses that fitted well we're 2 sizes larger than I am. The shop lady did say that wedding dress sizes are nothing like high Street sizes

Stephanie Dorricott
Stephanie Dorricott 3 Jul 2018

The lady in the shop I went to said dresses come up in all sizes, too big and too small, the dress I bought fit me absolutely perfectly and was a size 8, only adjustment required was length, the only size I buy on the high street are sizes 12 or 10 x

Deffo need to go two sizes bigger, I tried dresses on that were bigger than my normal dress size and they were no where near the size I needed x

I’m a size 10-12 and my wedding dress is a size 8! I’ve always heard that wedding dresses come up small but mine didn’t, so I think you’d just need to try them on and see xx

My dress was as size 8 sample I squeezed in parts of it and I'm a 12 I love it when it's doesn't fit properly so I know it will be amazing when it does

Ami Hallford
Ami Hallford 3 Jul 2018

First of all, I'm shocked that their sample size is only an 8! They are normally a 12 as standard. I would go and see the dress, try it on and don't worry the dress shop workers are very good and have tricks to tie up the back with ribbon and things if it doesn't fit. Good luck!

I’m a size 12 and had to purchased size 14 in the designer I liked however tried on smaller ones in diff designers they just all come up different sized by designer x

It's apparantly standard to go up a dress size for the right fit in a wedding dress (as if we didn't have enough difficulty with inconsistent sizing in regular clothes stotes) so it's unlikely that a dress which is 2 to 3 sizes too small. I'm a 14 (New Look size clothes) and curvy and I struggled to get anything less than a 16 over my hips/butt. If the zip goes low at the back you might be in luck but it would be a shame to drive all that way to not be able to get in it. Most stores can order in a larger sample (provided the designer has made one) for a fee (c£40) to cover courier costs.

I tried sample dresses that were too small and too big but the bridal store staff are all so good that they do things to help give you the best idea of how it looks on. If it’s too small, don’t worry you’ll get it on but they just won’t do it up but what they will do is pull the top had round your back so from the front it will look like it fits. Just remember it’s to give you the best idea of how your dress will look so try not get too disheartened if they don’t have your size. I bought my dress from a sample size that was miles too big for me but when the dress came in that was my size it was so perfect. Enjoy the experience and try on as many different styles as you can,

Beware that wedding dresses come up incredibly small. I saw one online and the shop ordered one in in my size to try and i couldn't even get it on let alone do it up! Have ended up buying a dress 2-3 sizes bigger than i am! Wouldn't want you to travel all that way for something that possibly won't fit! X

I would go anyway, as you may well find.something you love more by chance and discover you don't actually like your dream dress in the flesh once you've seen it. Or you may try it and it looks great. You never know

I agree wedding dresses are usually smaller. Went dress shopping a few weeks ago and was surprised at the difference, the lady doing the appointment said you can't judge on sizes at all when it comes to wedding dresses. I bought bigger and it only just fits so no weight gain for me x

Just go with what ever you want doll it's better to have what you would like if you want a fitted dress get one to your size I'm sure you will still look amazing no matter what x
