Hi brides . Question about passports. My passport is due to run out end of this year. Im getting married july 2019 and we are planning our honeymoon after we get married in october. Do i renew my passport this year. Then change again after we married as my name will change. Or do i not bother until next year? Also can i change me name before im married on my passport .? Or something else. Im a little confused .
If you change it now it will have to be in your maiden name ,to change to your married name you have to wait for 4 months before your due to get married then you can fill out a form to have your married name but you need it signed by registrar. I would personally wait into four months before you're due to get married otherwise you will have to pay twice unless of course you are going away this year as well . Congratulations to both you and your partner I hope you have a wonderful life together hope this helps
Thank you so much. X
I’d just wait as long as you don’t need it before then! And then at least you haven’t gotta mess about twice xx
We got married on July the 2nd and I flew with my new name on the 4th July.
Mine is due to expire next year and we got married last year. We just book holidays under my maiden name which is completely acceptable! X
I was told that my passport needs to be in date to do our notification of marriage so I need to renew it but I believe you can travel in your married name if you take you marriage certificate with you
I let mine expire and then renewed it a coupe of days after the wedding. Thankful it was back in time for the honeymoon 4 weeks later. Phew! X
Be aware 3 months before you get married you can get it changed and your registrar will charge to complete the form approx £35. £75 for passport
I get married 14th July and go on honeymoon Sept, my passport ran out Sept last year as I didn't need it I waited to renew under married name, you will have to pay full price again if you want to change your name, you get a small form from post office and the registrar will sign in 3 months before your wedding and you send this with normal form and it becomes valid once you are married, although it is not a legal requirement so it's your choice, hope this helps x
I have just done mine in my what will be my married name ..It cost me £10.00 for the registrar to sign the form..c
You can change the name on your passport up to 12 weeks before your wedding. Just means you can't use it until you're married
I was also faced with this dilema.
Really it should only be an issue to wait if you are likely to want to travel before your wedding. My passport ran out in January and I am getting married in July. At our pre-wedding meeting with the registrar I asked her to sign the form which she did with no charge. (Necessary form can be downloaded from gov.co.uk) You will need to make a postal application rather than on-line because of the name change. My post-dated passport arrived 9 days after posting. Be aware that you should only book travel once you have your new passport and the name on travel documents must be as per passport. If you choose to renew now and then change the name you will pay twice.
I got married on 21 Oct and was going on honeymoon 24 Oct.. I got the post dated passport form filled in by the vicar and ensured I had it in plenty of time. Start date on passport will be your wedding date.
This was the best way for me as otherwise you have to pay renewal fee for the name change. Plus i thought it was lovely going on honeymoon in my married name
Don’t bother. It’s not illegal to have a different name on your passport as long as it matches the name on your holiday booking.
My passport doesnt expire till 2022, so i haven't bothered to change mine. I am currently on my last day of honeymoon now and all you need to do is remember to book your holiday in your maiden name so it matches your passport. However if yours is due to renew then it's worth waiting but depends how much time you'll have between the wedding and honeymoon to do it. I have heard somewhere that you can do your passport in your new name before getting married if you get a letter from the registry office that you have given your notice to but I'm not sure; worth looking in to
I got a predated passport. So I got my passport about 6 weeks before we were married in my marriage name but I couldn’t use it before our wedding and then if we decided not to get married I had to hand the passport back to the passport office.
I'm currently looking at weddings abroad and the official advise is that you must travel on the name you currently have and then change it when you get home as your current name is the name you will have when you travel out there
Take care if you don’t get a new passport for your honeymoon as most countries require a passport be valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of your trip x
I didn't realise you could have it in your married name so renewed it in my maiden name...4 years later it's still in my maiden name, lol x
just go careful as I had to renew mine so it wasn't out of date to use as proof of ID when giving notice of marriage! Good luck ️
You can change it 3months before wedding to your new name but need to have a form signed off by person marrying you, its quite easy just done mine didnt have a problem
You dont have to change your name on a passport. I haven't bothered. Unless you have no other form of ID, the only complication would be if say you changed you name on a bank account, and had to have photographic proof on you one day and it had your old name on. Then you'd need to carry you marraige certificate too. Thankfully a driving licence gets rid of all that nonsense. Just remember to book holidays in your maiden name.
If it runs out this year and you’re not planning on going away. I’d wait until May 2019 to renew it, and then renew in your married name using the form issued by the Registrar.
So glad this was asked as my passport runs out August 2019 and I get married in May 2020! I’ll now wait till January 2020 and renew then getting the registrar to sign so I can go in my married name as we go on honeymoon straight after!
Remember to have enough time left on your passport to travel if you decide to leave it! (i.e. some places need 6 months left before the expiry date to fly)
