I sent mine out a couple weeks ago for our wedding in Sept. We sent out just the day ones so we can assess numbers before we send out the evening ones. Incase people say they can't come. Someone could get bumped up from the eve xx

Getting married in December, sending day invites out end of April.

There's no need to panic. Set your RSVP date a month before your numbers are needed at the venue. That way you've got enough time to chase.
If it's a summer wedding, either send save the dates or send them out before summer holidays are released by travel companies to save any "Oh I wish I knew sooner I just booked my holiday".

It really depends if you've sent a save the date as the invitation is then just a formality? General advice is 6 weeks but that sounds too short to me so I'd say 3 months before is a good window. If you do it too far in advance people will forget to respond and you'll spend ages chasing them up. The caterers etc. won't need to know final numbers until 2 weeks before so 3 months will give you plenty of time! :-)

6 weeks is more than enough time. .. 3 months is too long ... save the dates should be 3-4 months and invitations 6-8 weeks

Will be doing our save the dates beginning of next year and the invitations maybe 6-8 months before wedding day... We've got just over two years until the big day so no rush..
