Hi fellow brides and grooms. H2B and I were planning on making our own wedding cake, nothing major, either a couple of small tiers with some floral decorations or one layer with cupcakes. We've had some trial runs and feel confident about it but others seem concerned about the pressure of completing this closer to the date. Anyone had experience of this? Have you managed it/found it was unrealistic and paid for a cake? Thanks in advance!

My sister and her husband made their own cake last year- it was a 'naked' cake decorated with berries, absolutely beautiful ! xx

There is nothing wrong with making your own cake, I make cakes myself, but I won't be making my own cake as I don't want to spend the day before baking. It's entirely up to you and how you want to spend the days before your wedding. Xx

It will be fine.... My mum made my first one 22yrs ago. & my future mother in law is making the 1s for our up coming wedding in August... Its nice to have a personal touch..
I think it’s doable however very stressful the few days before your wedding when you need time sorting other last bits and bobs.
Personally having the perfect cake was high up the top of my lists and I compromised on other things so that I could pay a good cake make to make my perfect cake.
However I did have each tier as a different flavoured sponge, the cost of spice cake is almost double. And because my wedding was very traditional I decided to make my own 2 tier spice cake couple months before fed it every other week and my bridesmaid helped ice it the day before the wedding.
Still cost about £50 in ingredients (including the bottle of rum we fed it with)
Only other thing you could do it buy plain sponge cakes from the supermarket and pay the florist to decorate them .. good luck with everything x
U can make sponge cakes and freeze them.dont taste any diff.then get them out a day b4 u Ned to ice them.if using roll out icing use cornflour to roll it out.soo much better then icing sugar to work with.need the icing so it’s soft before u roll it out with no cornflour on 1 st.have fun.xx
My dil.made their wedding cake...nothing posh .
She made 23 practice cakes before hand which I has to.taste (.tough job but someone had to.do.it). Chocolate cake with chocolate cigarello around outside topped with fresh raspberries.
It's going to be fine. Everyone reacts to pressure differently. As long as you book time in to do it, it's going to be great. We are making our own cake too x
