Hi All, I've set my wedding date for 11th August, I was hoping to start looking for a wedding dress March and aiming to buy one by end of April. I'm not looking for a big one, more sleek and lace. I've been told by a few people and mags you need to have your dress bought 6 months prior-which is now stressing me out as I'm still trying to lose weight! What is your experience and can I leave it to this level of time? Thanks for your insight!

You need to have your dress bought by your wedding day! 6 months is only a guide, I ordered mine on-line and love it. Could have worn it the day I got it. I think the 6 months guide is to ensure any alterations are done and that you have peace of mind.

If you were to order a brnad new one from a bridal store you would need at least 9 months but if you plan to buy one from like a wed 2 be you can leave it up to a month before.

Phew! I'm getting married in September but hoping to lose some serious weight before then. So dress shopping for me won't start until May / June. So relieved the six month rule is just for guidance. Thanks ladies x

If you get your dress from a bridal shop then it can take up to 6 months to arrive because it’s made for you to your measurements. It depends if you’re going off the peg or not. My dress was 16 weeks to arrive and only because mines didn’t need anything altered as I was a standard size and fitted in to one of there sizes

If you're planning in buying brand new from a bridal salon then it can take 3-6 months for them to order it and the dress to arrive for the designers. Mine took 3 months to arrive x

Depends where you buy it from. I ordered mine in July 2017 and it was delivered to the bridal shop last week. Dresses can always be taken in 2 sizes.

Im also getting married on the 11th August. I got my wedding dress last week... It will come in store in June for fittings.... Which again take 4/5 weeks to do all the changes needed. I was told to try have it done by mid Feb... U can buy off the rack, sale dresses if u can find what u want... As u can take it there and then... Wed 2 be is good... But definitely look at sample dresses... Where are u in the country as different areas have different things available...

I ordered mine in early November and the very earliest it was able to arrive was end of March - so basically 5 months. That was a boutique and then when it arrives I then go back in and start with the first dress fitting and alterations. I get married end of May so it gives me 2 months for alterations x

I bought mine in a bridal sample sale locally and took it home that day (got a bargain) and it was perfect not a mark on it. I then had it altered nearer my date - the six months is only a guide if you shop around there are always dresses ready to bought on the day

We get married April this year and I bought my dress 1 year ago but only just had my first actual fitting for alterations (exactly 3 months prior) but the seamstress is on site so depending where you go, 3 months would even give you plenty of time 😃 enjoy!

I'm getting married on the same date and I ordered my dress before Christmas as the bridal store said if I leave it much longer there might not be time to get alterations done and things. I would say get it as soon as possible.

I ordered my dress in size I was with months to go, then got it taken in before the wedding with weight I'd lost, most seamstresses work on the dress 2 weeks before big day for final fitting, that way you can lose as much or as little as you want x

I feel like that’s a long time, I could change my mind 6 times in a 6 months. I have 9 months no idea when to start looking in case I change my mind.

Personally I got mine ahead but only because I was excited to get it. Wed2b do dress sizes according to your actual clothes size and you can take it home that day or whenever so you have time to lose weight and get your dress. You don't need to follow the set time limits. Everyone is different. I didn't even have the set 12 months to start from I only had 8

I bought mine from wed2b straight of rail 2 months before my wedding I went from a size 22 to a 14 and didn't want to try a dress on while I was bigger in case the style didn't suit me when I was smaller so I found this best option for me x

I only started planning my wedding 7 months before the date so by the time I shopped for my dress it was less than 6 months, I bought it from a place where I had to organise my own adjustments and have had these done with still 5 weeks until my wedding, March will be fine I’m sure.

hi i own a dress shop The Wedding Dress Barn and it will depend on the brand of dress you are looking for and also if the shop sells off the peg and if they do if they have it in your size! we sell off the peg but if you came in and were a size 8 you may have a more limited choice for off the shelf than if you were a size 12. if you wanted to order in an eddy k dress for example you are looking at a lead time of around 5/6 months as eddy k make the dresses in italy for us to order. i hope this all helps have a wonderful wedding day xxx

It depends if it has to be made or you are buying off the rack. Mine arrived in 5 months but they suggested leaving three months for alterations. I would start looking now as dresses can usually be altered by two dress sizes but I would check before buying. I think you will neck to order off the rack with 6 months to go so you have chance to get it altered.

If you get it off the peg then you can buy whenever just depends on how busy the seamstress is for alterations. Minimum from most places is 5 months if you have one ordered.

If you go to an outlet store you can buy off the rack and get it altered a bit closer to your wedding date. I get married same date as you and bought my dress from WED2B. Its a lace sheath dress and hangs beautifully. Will barely need altering x

Bethan Roberts

I can’t see how.
As long as your happy to buy off the shelf then there’s no need for 6 months before. People book weddings for a few weeks away so i wouldn’t say its a rule xx

I bought my dress in November and I am getting married in September... My dress is being custom made so I won't have it ready till April with final measurements 6 weeks before the date.

If you are buying off the rack then you don't need to adhere to the 6 month guidance but if you are buying from a boutique which will be made to measure you will need to get one ASAP as some may not be able to cater.

Hala Al-Chalabi

If you don’t want a traditional dress you can get some lovely dresses from high street stores. You could probably buy these nearer to the wedding, however if you start looking now bear in mind the dress may be gone by the time you want if you’re planning to loose weight. If you’re planning to loose weight I’d wait till nearer the time. If you’re planning to buy from a traditional wedding shop you would probably need 6 months.

Depends where you get it from. Wed2b tou can tame it gome the same day. Some bridal shops will have to order it in which takes 6 months.

Don't forget that a dress can be taken in by at least 1 size, if not 2. I bought a dress that was actually too big but looking to go down 2 more sizes. I've been told that it's not a problem :)
