Dress alterations? Has anyone had any experience of buying the dress but having it altered else where? I got my dress as a local shop was closing down so it was reduced by £900. It will need to be altered nearer the time but I'm worried if other bridal shops will do it or if I would be better of just finding a seamstress with there own company? Thanks xx

I’d personally find someone who will do it for you rather than a shop. Ask people who have had there alterations done by this person too

I bought my dress and had it altered nearer the time and my bridesmaids dresses altered. I had it done by a seamstress that works from home and she done a fantastic job and didn’t cost a fortune. So I would advise finding someone to do it for you rather than the shop x

I have decided to use an independent seamstress recommended to me by a different bridal shop to where I bought my dress. The place i bought my dress their after sales service was appalling and I wasnt prepared to give them anymore money. This woman has over 20 years experience and has worked on my style of dress before. I would recommend you do your research and go with who you feel comfortable with. Oh and my lady also is coming to my home to do alterations too so they tend to be more flexible to your schedule :)

I bought my dress on sale but had it altered elsewhere as the shop is purchased my dress from was two hours away, I emailed local bridal stores they were all happy to do it for me, and didn't cost a lot of money either..

I struggled to find someone with a reasonable price that I trusted. Finally found a fabulous lady in Leeds if that is any good to you? If it is, reply and I’ll send her details x

When I bought my dress they gave me a list of seamstresses that they recommended. I contacted the one closest to me and made an appt to go see them to see how I felt with them! I also read online reviews etc. I am now booked in with them for when my dress needs altering.

I bought mine at wed2be almost a year early and they recommended a seamstress who is awesome. If they shut down they probably have the inside info on who's good.

The shop I bought mine from couldn’t fit me in for alterations and I ended up finding a local lady who worked from home who specialised in bridal alterations. It worked great.

I had mine altered by the seamstress recommended by the shop. Thankfully she was amazing as she had to remake the entire bodice as the dress shop screwed up with the measurements.

I did, bought mine then moved away so had it fitted by someone else. Was a recommendation from a dress shop. If your near Coventry I can pass on the details? X

I bought my dress online, but bought my veil & tiara from a local bridal shop. The seamstress is doing my alterations for both me & my bridesmaids xx

I got my dress online and had it altered at a local dress shop, the seamstress was absolutely lovely and did a fantastic job, she was quite shocked at how well the dress had been made based on what had been brought to her in the past!

I had the same thing happen to me.....the dress I ordered came into the shop (from abroad) 2 sizes to big so had to pay out again for alterations wasn't impressed at the time at the extra cost to my wedding dress & bridesmaid dress & had to take the dresses to their recommended dress makers who I have to say they looked after us better than the bridal shop did... All the bridal was interested in how much you were prepared to spend xx

I brought my skirt & top from a shop & then used my tailor who usually does my repairs & alterations.... Just Ensure you demand it's done several months ahead , NOT in last 2 weeks when you are stressed !!!!!

Sorry to jump on, can anyone give rough prices as to what they paid for alterations please? Got an appointment to see with a seamstress but want to know what's reasonable to expect xx

I've personally gone for a steam stress that runs her own business rather than a dress shop. X

I bought my dress today and payed for alterations in the shop which I'm now regretting.. They are charging £200 pound for alterations and then extra for the straps I want fitting..x

Just be careful who you get it got alterations done by an independent dressmaker and she was atrocious. She had my dress 8 months before the wedding and refused to touch until 2 days before wedding and kept cancelling appointments she had 3 bridesmaids dresses 6 months before wedding and she was to make the mother of bride outfit she sent my dress back to me unfinished and mother of the brides outfit and it was unfinished. And told me it was my fault as she wasn't fit for that amount of work my response was she shouldn't have accepted a deposit and took the work on if she wasn't fit for it as I could have got other dressmakers to do the same work in half the time and would have done a better job

Strange Question
Does Anyone Know Of A Trusted Seamstress In Edinburgh Scotland Who Won't Charge A Ton Of Money To Get Some Special Dresses Altered ???

Emma Raisborough

There will be plenty of seamstresses that will do it. I brought my dress from a place that only sells discontinued dresses but the lady doesn't do alterations herself - she just recommend a seamstress to me and she done a great job
