What sort of price should I expect to pay for a wedding cake? 3 or 5 tiers with minimal decoration and red velvet filling - I've received a variety of different quotes which has just confused matters :(

We are having a 3 tier cake which is coming in at £450 with free delivery and set up and she can hire us the silvery stand. We were quoted £375 by one lady but then she wanted £68 to deliver and couldn't supply a cake stand so we would have had to buy one.

We are having toffee cake on the bottom but we were warned that red velvet is too soft for on the cake. As a result we have a dummy tier above the toffee cake but have the red velvet tier as a cutting cake out of sight. The top tier is then a red velvet one for the two of us to take home.

My 4 tier cake is costing £425 inc. delivery and stand.
I'd go and meet a couple and do a tasting- the tasting is what swayed us to the lady we picked as they were so much nicer than the others

My auntie makes cakes for a living and a 3 tier cake that I wanted she would normally charge £450 for. I took this as a rough guide for wedding cakes generally x

My friend had red velvet for her wedding cake and because of the ingredients they use to make it red it went rotten by the day after! Just be aware of this before you choose red velvet.

Try m&s...I don't know if they do red velvet, but wedding cakes are stupidly expensive...I couldn't justify paying hundreds for a cake so we're looking at m&s.

I'm not sure how much they usually cost but my friend makes cakes and she's amazing!

I went for a 3 tier xske out of M&S. It was delicious. Cost me £65. Bottom layer fruit, then the top 2 sponge. It was ample for 100 guests. I wished I had have done the 4th layer for another £40 and had that as fruit and then the top 3 layers could have been sponge. Even if you still think you don't have enough, you can buy matching cake bars for £22. They have a brochure for all different cakes, I just had the cheapest.

I’m having 4 tiers with fruit as my bottom tier which is generally a lot more expensive than sponge. There will be a swirl of butterflies from top to bottom spiralling around the tiers and then scattered edible crystals and pearls too, and a little more. The cost of mine is £415 including delivery and set up. This is from an award winning cake maker.

I think it would depend where in the UK you are, I paid £90 for a 3 tier cake and the lady who made it was based in Leeds, but m and s will be the same wherever you are xx

Just wanted to say I'm a cake maker and just wanted to explain that you pay for the skill level which is why prices vary so greatly. Don't necessarily go for the cheapest just because you think it will save money as you are probably paying for a lower skill set and may not receive the cake you desire. If you're after perfect sharp edges on your icing, flawless decorations and perfectly level deep tiers for example, you will have to pay out a little more. Look through the portfolio of each decorator and compare them to see what sort of finish you would be happy with
