Hello, we are planning on getting married in 2019. We are both in our 40's and it is the 2nd time for both of us. Rather than a full wedding breakfast/reception we would like to have the wedding followed by a vintage afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones and cakes. We really do not want an evening reception. Has anyone done this before - has it gone down well? We are struggling to find a venue that can do the ceremony and the cream tea reception as well.

I have been to a wedding where they had afternoon tea instead of a full wedding breakfast, and although a nice idea and it was yummy, they didn't serve it until 5pm, by this time everyone was hungry and for a lot of us we just wanted a proper meal instead of cakes. If you make sure you serve it earlier in the afternoon (perhaps seat everyone between 1pm-3pm) I think this would be absolutely lovely. This is something quite popular at the moment - especially since afternoon tea on average tends to be cheaper than a 3 course meal - I am sure you will come across a venue that will do it for you.

I am having an afternoon tea instead of a sit down meal and our venue has been more than helpful. They've told us we can choose anything we like such as fillings and cakes etc and it's all included, we are also having the ceremony there as well. However we are having an evening reception at the same venue. That might be why you can't find a venue as most venues would prefer a wedding that lasts all day as it's better for them, you might find closer to the date venues will be more helpful. If not, it might be worth looking into having a separate ceremony venue and group book an afternoon tea in another venue x
