I think it would be best to contact your local registry now so you can get your head around how it all works. You will need to speak to both registry offices for where you live and where you are getting married as they will need to work together.

When I did it I provisionally booked my ceremony time with Cambridgeshire first and then they gave me a deadline in which we needed to give notice in Hertfordshire which is the district I live in. Most councils will only allow you to book your ceremony a year in advance and no sooner but there are a few councils that do allow you to book earlier. I think the same applies for giving notice of marriage - I think this expires after a year so you cannot do it any sooner. You are best contacting the registrars from the district you are getting married in and they can go through their procedures with you.

I had to phone the registry office for the district in Wales to get the provisional date (which I can confirm a year in advance) and hen arrange the legal licence to marry in Bristol. Hope that helps

I done a wee bit of research then phoned the registry office of the district we are marrying in, and she told me that they only book for the current and next again year (we're getting married Nov 19) so to call back in January. That's to book a registrar and discuss what we need. Then 3-4 months prior to wedding date they want to sort out all the paperwork and legal stuff.
So I take it we need to register in our own district too?

We had this - you book the registrar through the district that you're getting married in and you do the notice of marrige with your local district. The registrar one is your priority as that's the one which you need to check dates with.
Both of my districts were London Boroughs but I imagine it will be the same regardless.

We are doing the same... You book the registrars in the area of the ceremony but you must call your local council to give notice. You can book the registrars now so you have the date and time saved but you can only give notice within 12 months of your ceremony date!

I'm getting married in Shrewsbury and my local council is Dudley. I phoned up Shrewsbury registrar more then a year before and they didn't have a huge amount of times left tbh. They explained everything to me and send you an email explaining what you have to do. We have to book an appointment with Dudley council a minimum of 28 days before our wedding otherwise we can't get married as we need a legal document from them. If you phone up they are really helpful, apparently we could of had a registrar from either council but just though it's easier getting one from Shrewsbury xx

I was told You can book the registrar up to a maximum of two years to the date of the wedding and that You would have to call the local registrar for where your venue is. I got this info from the local registrars office when o enquiried... Hope this helps.

We are getting married in a different district to where we live. We booked the registrar in the district the wedding is taking place, well over a year in advance/probably about 18 months before (awesome because we got to pick whatever time we wanted) and we now have to give notice in the district we live. This needs to be don’t within 12 months of the wedding but at least 28 days before the ceremony.
