We're getting married August 2018, do we need to send out save the date card...

We're getting married August 2018, do we need to send out save the date card or should I just start preparing the invites now?

Hi Aimee you don't have to send save the dates, they are an American tradition :)

I get married August 2018 too. As it's a summer wedding we sent save the dates out this time last year. We are now sending invitations out so I'd skip save the dates and go straight to invitations. We only sent them out as we booked our wedding so far in advance so wanted people to keep it free.

We're not sending save the dates. They cost more and at the end of the day you can just call to tell people the date to put in their diary.

I only sent save the dates because my OH really wanted to. If it had been up to me I would have just got the invites out around now instead x

We're getting married next August too - we completely skipped saved the date cards and sent our invitations out this summer (I'm a teacher so have limited time to do wedding stuff)
My cousin is getting married in 2019, and just sent us a whatsapp message to let us know!

Just invites. People need full details ready for putting in holiday requests at work.

We didn't bother with save the dates, it's more expense and between deaths, fall outs, break ups, new relationships & health issues, our list has changed several times in the past yr/18 months, we sent invites 6 months prior but most already knew when ours was for the 3 yrs since we booked it x

I would send the invites asap. People may need to book the time off work and it can get quite competitive.

Im getting married September 2018 and have sent save the dates already. We have family up the line and also gives you something to talk about with others. I did mine very cheaply through vista print, I made business cards into fridge magnets, all in all, including printing business cards, magnets and small envelopes I spent £20 making 100.

If you can afford both and want to thats up to you. Just invites would be ok you can always tell people when you see them so they can save the date

You don’t have to send out save the dates, it is personal preference really. It isn’t a must. Save the dates just give people that little bit more notice.
I get married in August 2018 also, and we sent out save the dates in August just gone, 1 year before. Only because we are getting married in the middle of the summer... so people are booking summer holidays , and we are getting married on a weekday , so we wanted to give people plenty of notice for work etc.

Why do you send invites so early. Here it is a standard 6 weeks before wedding. I sent mine out mine out 2 months before

UKbride Member 26 Oct 2017

We are also getting married Aug 2018, we sent save the dates Aug just gone, only because I found them very cheaply on eBay, we have lots of family having to travel, and it is on a Sunday so they would need to book the Monday off work. We are currently starting to send out our invites now so that the evening guests also have plenty of notice (we only sent save the days to daytime guests)

We're getting married end of July 18, and sent save the dates out last February because it's summer holidays and wanted people to be able to keep the date free before they booked holidays away. We're sending proper invites Feb 18.

I have sent save the date cards out only because there could be a possibility we have to change the wedding venue due to the council may stop doing weddings there. We are getting married August 2018.

We get married in August 2018 and sent save the dates in August of this year; we wanted people to know the date in advance of booking next year's holidays. As it is, one family of 4 had already booked their holiday but a number of others told us it was useful to have the save the date when they did. We will do our invites nearer the time... perhaps at Easter... so people don't put off RSVPing or shove it in a drawer to think about nearer the time and then forget. We are using vistaprint for all our wedding stationery which is far more reasonably priced than other places.

We're getting married August 2018, we created a Facebook group to ask people to save the date and we phoned the people that aren't on Facebook.

We sent out save the date cards and sort of wish we hadn't. All the people you are close to will know your wedding date and save it anyway.

I'm a designer so had fun making save the date business cards a year in advance...waste of money though as it turns out even some family didn't save the date!

I think I'm going to send save the dates as our wedding is 2020 and to send invites now is too soon. We are only doing them so people know not to book holidays etc

Our wedding guy told us save the dates a year before in case people book holidays and then actual invites 6 months before x

We get married August 2018 and sent save the dates back in September. We sent them because it is a weekday wedding so people will need to book the time off Work etc which may have been a problem if colleagues book off for summer holidays. Also, quite a lot of our guests will need to travel and stay over so will need to book accommodation before everywhere fills up.
