I have recently purchased my wedding dress from a sample sale at a size 18 - it is about 2 inches too small around the top - which is fine as i'm on slimming world and have just under 18 months to lose what is needed. The lady in the shop said the dress could be taken in two sizes, but as the dress sizes are smaller than high street i have no idea what size this would be especially when it equates to weight for SW. Am i best finding some measurements for a size 16 wedding dress and get as close to them as possible? Or does anyone know a seamstress i could get in touch with to get advice?

Hi if your dress is an 18 then it would actually be size 16 so you can aim to go down to 12-14 normal sizing good luck :)

The owner has of my dress shop is also a seamstress and she has advised losing no more than two stone which is around two dress sizes.

You don’t need to worry about seeing a seamstress until a month before, just be careful about how much you lose.

A good seamstress is dependant on your area x

My seamstress started working on my dress 6 weeks before my wedding, was done in 3 weeks! My dress was huge and she took it down about 3 sizes. Good seamstresses will be able to amend the dress to what is needed x

My dress had to be made earlier than hoped as it was discontinued by the designer. I had to order it in the size I was at the time, knowing I planned to lose weight. I was told the same, that they can only alter it 2 dress sizes. I go in and try my dress on every couple of months so we can keep track and make sure I don't lose too much. I don't get married until July 2018 so the dress will be altered around May/June.
I wouldn't go by how much weight you lose as an indication of whether you have gone down a size, as it depends where the weight is shifting from. I would find a reliable seamstress, explain the situation and maybe do what I am doing, have regular fittings to monitor how much the dress needs altering and build your weight loss around those two dress sizes . A good seamstress can advise you properly about how many sizes they can alter the dress by. Some dresses can be altered more than others. If the dress is a certain style/detail etc significant alterations could change the dress completely and then may not even be like the original look you fell in love with.

As a bridal seamstress I would day it is dependant on the dress. Some dresses can go in more than others as. It does depend on the skill of your seamstress too. I have brides come to me as soon as they collect their dress( sometimes a year before) As it gives them peace of mind they will be taken care of and get on well with their seamstress. Fittings can start anywhere from 8 weeks before the wedding again depending on how much work needs doing. I would definitely advise researching your seamstress meet them before you commit to anything. Feel free to message me for advice if you like. Hope this helps and good luck x

I purchased my dress before I lost weight and I lost nearly 4 stone and drop 4 dress sizes. The seamstress in the shop did an amazing job of altering it for me but once she began alterations I had to be careful to maintain

I purchased my dress 1 size smaller and needed a loss of 2 inches on my waist but i tried on my dress without loosing the weight and it fits fine.
If you google search the designer for your dress you can find the actual measurements in inches online and use that to measure yourself to see what size you need to be
