Hi as many of you will know I have pretty much got everything under control....

Hi as many of you will know I have pretty much got everything under control. We get married in May 2018 and the one BIG thing I haven't sourced is my photographer and Im struggling. Neither Tony nor I feel very comfortable with photographs and I have left this task pushing it to the back in the somewhat vain hope it will go away. Don't get me wrong I don want some beautiful pictures but I don't feel comfortable with me being in the pics. Those photographers that I have spoken to are really expensive starting at £1400 going up to over £4000. Like everyone we are on a budget and to be honest I could just about manage the lower figure. Give me some advice my bridal friends please

Where are you located? I am in Hertfordshire and was looking through the links on this site the other day when I found one in North London around £700 (under suppliers on this site). We also feel like you about photographs but at the same time will want some.

Hi £4000 is very steep there should be some cheaper ones out there :)

Personally I would go to some wedding fairs so you can meet with the photographers. You can normally get a discounted price there too. The prices you are quoting are high to very high. Good luck x

Is there a local college where a student would do it in return for using the photos in a portfolio? We're using a family member who recently won a prize at a photography competition.

I got mind from gumtree, told him I just wanted natural shots mostly, him and his wife went to the venue before to see my husband setting up , then cane to photograph the get ready but then stayed at our venue till we cut the cake after 9pm, must of been with us over 12 hours and charged £350, I love our photos!

Personally I think you get what you pay for and it's worth investing in a good professional photographer. Our photographer stayed with us from 1:30pm until midnight. I told him at 10pm to clock off and just enjoy himself but he carried on taking photos of everyone dancing and enjoying themselves. He has since put his prices up but I feel he can do as he's won awards for his photography. He's such a lovely guy and does a fantastic job. Steve Grogan Photography

Lisa Reynolds
Lisa Reynolds 14 Oct 2017

My top tip would be to meet with a few photographers, it is really important you feel comfortable with them, we met 3 and booked the one we clicked with most. I wouldn't worry too much about actually being photographed, a good photographer will be able to put you at ease so you shouldn't really notice them. Is there a college near you? If so you might be able to find a photography student that would do your pics cheaper than an established photographer.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 14 Oct 2017

We found a documentary-style photographer. You have your day and they stay in the background taking photos so there isn't a lot of posing and obvious focus on you. If you are based near notts pm me and i can send you his details

Your quoted prices seem very high we have been 2 4 or 5 local wedding fayres and there r usually lots of photographers there all the ones we spoke to quoted about £1000. We found it best to talk to the photographers and found one that was lovely n we felt comfortable talking to. There going to be a key part of your wedding day so you need a photographer you can chat easily too. The one we like also does a pre- wedding photo shoot included in the price so you can test some photos out before the big day.

I got ours £500 cheaper through meeting her at a fair. The package includes a pre wedding shoot to. She also works in the way that you don't really know she's there so get some really natural shots, this might be a better option for you if you are conscious of being in photos

There is so many cheaper photographers out there I know one in the plymouth area and she has all different budgets to suit your needs. I would try and haggle with them. If you don’t feel comfortable with so many pictures taken then only ask for certain pics to be taken. But I really wouldn’t worry about that cause on the day you won’t care who’s taken photos cause your feel and look amazing and your groom will look lovely too you won’t stop smiling all day to the point it hurts but not falsely. Have you got wedding groups in the area your from? If so then put an add stating what your budget is and I’m sure some people will comment

To be honest I felt the same. We get married in 3 weeks and I was dreading spending a fortune on something I knew would make me feel self conscious and awkward. After a bit of shopping around however I found a reasonable photographer who's photos I love. We met up for a chat and a couple of practice photos and actually he made us both feel really relaxed with his happy quirky nature. I'd recommend speaking with photographers in person rather than telephone or internet searches cos if you find one with the right personality you will relax and the money won't matter as much

I just got married this year in Hungary and had Arts Illustrated Studios as my photographer. They have several packages and are based in Hungary so the prices are way better. We have a wonderful wedding video too so if you don't like a lot of photo taking I would suggest you ask for a video, less directing there! My now husband didn't like the thought of the photography session but the guys were super professional and friendly, after 5 minutes we were completely comfortable. You can discuss your concern with them and they will work with you. I would be happy to send you some photos and our video to see what they did, PM me if interested. :)

We had Andrew Fletcher, he is a documentary photographer based in scunthorpe. Whoever you choose, you possibly need to head towards a natural and documentary style. Good luck xx

There are many professional photographers that will provide you with superb photos and albums for less than £1,000. Just make sure that you meet them in person, check their previous work, look for reviews (online is a good way of getting accurate reviews), and make sure that they are fully insured.
As someone else suggested, go to a few wedding fayres.
Using a novice/student is NOT a good idea, you really need an experienced photographer that knows how to produce what you want - you only get one chance, so make sure that you don't risk a disaster!
Professionals usually have top quality backup equipment, so equipment failure is unlikely.

Hi , i to am getting married april 2018 and what i have noticed alot is that when people hear the word wedding there prices immediately highten. Funnily enought when i attended an open day were we are holding our reception the photographers we chose were also there displaying there work. I took to them straight away. A husband and wife who were very relaxed. Weren't pushy at all. And catered to your needs and not so much packages. That and they were amazing photographers. We have booked them from 3:00pm til 11:30pm and have paid just under £400. We explained that we to were on a budget. What we want and what we didn't want. And they were very helpful. Look around. Gather quotes. Alot of people i know chose not to have photographers and let there guests take there own photographs so they could see it from there perspective. Hope you sort it soon xx

I was exactly the same when we were looking for our photographer. I hate having my photo taken and my other half always dislikes photos taken of him. We didn't want too many posed pictures and just wanted natural shots to really capture the day. We met with quite a few photographers, most of who made us feel uncomfortable or tried to tell us that we had to have certain shots done. That was until we met Tim Stephenson. He made us both feel at ease, was brilliant at dealing with my dislike of photos/ having photos taken. He was friendly, unassuming and put me at ease on the wedding day (I was a bag of nerves). I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Hi we used Tim Stephenson for our wedding almost two years ago. He's very relaxed, low key bit also professional... He's unobtrusive and captured loads of images for us that we were unaware he'd taken. We referred to him as the ninja photographer as he had a knack of reappearing and getting shots when least expected and we barely noticed him a lot of the time. Thoroughly recommended

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 15 Oct 2017

Any photographer worth their salt should be able to get a couple to relax. Meet with some and ask how for specific examples of how they get couples to relax. If they can't answer then they probably lack experience. I use various methods from just talking to getting the couple to play a game that will produce the right result for the shot I want. Take a look at my page for plenty of examples Shooting Pixels. Any photographer you consider should be able to show you examples of genuine emotions.

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 15 Oct 2017

Check photographers reviews on FB, a laid back photographer who knows what to do and how to mix well with your guests and have a laugh with you will help, tbh nobody likes having their photo taken that's where personality comes in. Plenty of photographers out there that will stress you out! Find someone you like as much as their photos. They should also be able to guide you through the day if they have experience. Don't go cheap like I did years ago :-( May 2018? Better hurry up! :-)

Hello, I'm a wedding photographer. www.joshuawybornphotogrpahic.com is me. Don't worry I'm not here to sell myself although if you like my work and want to book then amazing! however, I offer monthly payments for my clients. maybe ask photographers if they offer this? I also offer credit card payments too as some clients find that easier?

Feel free to get in touch if you wish but also see if the ones you've looked at would offer this? All of my clients love the monthly payment option. After being a groom myself last year I found how crazy this world is and so I re did my entire business to be client lead not industry lead! :)

Hi. In a previous thread I too raised my concerns over the cost of photography. I simply don't buy the hourly rate charge. If you genuinely feel you won't be happy in any photo by any photographer then why pay that kind of money? I marry in June 2018 and booked my photographer 2 weeks ago. She is Peterborough based and charges around £400. Thats for all day too x

Hi get friends to take pictures on their own phones, you'll be much more comfortable and some smartphones take great pictures. You can get them printed on free prints which is in the app stores plus many more apps. The quality of the prints is very good and you only pay postage.
