Hi, I bought my wedding dress (rather unexpectly) at the weekend. I was expecting to just try stuff on and have a few girly shopping trips before actually buying but we found a dress that there are only 10 of and it was sort of buy it or lose it! Has anyone ever bought a dress that has literally been the complete opposite of what they thought they wanted? It’s everything I said I didn’t want but when I put it on, I loved it. Now I’m feeling like I’m unsure all the time because it was so sudden and so unexpected and the dress is so different to what I thought I wanted. Every time I look at the pictures I love it again but I guess I just want some reassurance that this is normal??

This also happened to my friend. She had a list of what she wanted and went for something completely different. She loves it. It has definitely made me keep an open mind about my dress when I start looking. xx

I thought I knew what I wanted. Then saw a picture of a dress total opposite. I can't get that dress out of my head now and don't like all the ones I did before!

Your experience sounds like the exact one I had. I went looking with my sister because we never get the chance to do it and I tried on a dress that I never thought I would like and loved it, it was in the sale that day so I had to buy it then or lose it. Even though its not what I thought I would like, I still love it and can't wait to wear it.

I did the same as you as the bridal shop was closing down. I love my dress and I am now losing weight to fit into it

I did the same. Always dreamed about a mermaid dress and hated princess dresses... First time I've ever been looking tried this dress on and knew it was the one, so bought it straight away. And it is a princess dress!

I've been married before but I do remember that the dress I was in love with the the shop window was awful when I put it on. I could have cried until they brought out a completely different one which I would never have looked at and it was perfect. Even more perfect as it was on sale.

Ditto. I saw the vintage lace style I wanted but when I tried it on I didn't like it. Tried on lots of styles but then tried on a very simple one and was stunned. It's hanging in my bedroom and I have to resist trying it on again.

yup - normal - had my heart set on a tapework number a la Downton Abbey, tried it on and it looked like a nighty! Was flicking through ebay feeling sorry for myself and saw the dress which I bought there and then. Red bodice with gold embroidery and a full tulle princess skirt with train. Can't wait to wear it!!!

Mine is the complete opposite of what I thought I wanted. If it wasnt for my mum and bridesmaid I would have never even taken it off the rail. However when I put it on tjere was no doubt in my mind that it was the one for me

Yes I was adamant I wanted sleeves or a bolero with dress, with no train and quite plain, and without a veil. Had no sleeves, veil, lots of detail and a decent train. I didn’t even have it fully on and started crying. When u know, you just know

I dreamed of a tight fit fishtail style dress and then when I tried it on it just wasn’t for me! Ended up with a strapless princess style dress something I never thought I’d have and it was honestly perfect even my husband was shocked when he seen me with it as he imagined me in what I had originally wanted!

I had exactly the same experience. I'd tried on 1 other dress before hand. I have the same feeling when I look at the pics. I have since tried on the 1st dress again and another to get the thoughts out of my head and now it has reassured me and I am so in love with mine 😊. Xx

I did this exact same thing even to buying it when I only went to try them on! Wouldn’t change it for the world! I loved my dress! 🥂 you’ll look amazing! Xx

I also bought mine unexpectedly and was worried I might see something else but just to reassure you my wedding it a week away and my dress is still perfect for me. Even better now it has been taken up etc :) xx

Yes I wanted something simple as we were only having a small wedding ending up falling in love with a blush pink princess gown with train and diamonte back. I worried constantly it wasn't right once I had brought it but felt amazing on the day!

Same thing happened to me.... I had planned 3 days of solid shopping but bought the 3rd dress I tried on so was finished by 2pm on the first day. I love my dress and like you keep looking at pictures to reassure myself that I made the right decision but I have to admit I feel a bit 'robbed' of the experience as it was so quick and keep thinking that maybe I should have tried on more dresses just for fun but I know that it's the dress so seems a little pointless x

I said I didn't want want white or strapless & kept loving dresses with all over lace. My dress was white & strapless with no lace whatsoever! I knew it was the one when I put it back on for a 2nd time and didn't want to take it off!! x

Yes me! I didnt like mine at all on the hanger but my mum convinced me to try it and i loved it! So bought it 12 months before my wedding. Ever since all ibe done is to panic that ill hate it on the day, but i tried it on again recently and fell in love again. So dont panic, if you fell in love with it you will again as soon as you have it on x

I know how you feel. I tried on and fell in love with my dress nearly a year ago before we’d even found a venue. It was exactly what I wanted but not a classical bridal dress (its black) which some people I’ve told are very put off by.
I love it but sometimes have a wobble thinking will I love it in the future and think back to when I was a child wanting a beautiful, white princess dress then I look st the photos taken when trying it on and think ‘yup that’s mine’ x

I wanted a dress with a huge skirt and always hated the mernaid / trumpet style x turns out those looked fab on and the others made me look like one of those toilet roll holders your granny had years ago lol ! Xx

I brought a dress the style i really thought i wanted took it home and still went shopping the weekend after to look at a few more. Ended up with a completely different style and took dress 1 back! Once i had paid for the 2nd one i never looked gor another dress it was defiantly the one! X

My daughter did exactly the same 18 months before the wedding and she has hundreds since but not as beautiful or classy as the on she bought on impulse

UKbride Administrator
UKbride Administrator 14 Oct 2017

I did exactly the same. I went shopping with my Mum and bridesmaids, just to get in the wedding atmosphere and see what it was like to try dresses on! I ended up buying the 4th dress I tried as it was on offer too. We hadn't even booked a venue at this point. It was the best decision. I got married last Saturday and I loved the dress just as much as the day I got it. Like you, I kept wondering if I was a bit hasty and kept looking at photos, but I am so glad I did it! Go with your gut. Xx

UKbride Administrator 14 Oct 2017

Omg! I did the exact same thing! First time i ever went dress looking was with my mum, my nana and my sister, it was a last min girly trip out for the day. I thought lets have a girls day and start getting excited and getting a few ideas of what i do and do not like. The dress i got is actually a dress that i fell in love with over the internet that was no where near where i lived and i searched and searched. I went to this show of the hook and it was there! The only one and in my size too. It was like fate really. But i still have those feelings that you do too x

I did exactly the same last weekend, had an app at a local shop, went with mum,MOH, grandma, knew the style I wanted was lace but was open to letting them pick a few, tried princess, mermaid, fishtail and ended up with a simple and classy dress, DID NOT expect it and still think have I chose the right one and should I have gone to more shops but all it ends up doing is confusing you the more you try on and look at so I'm glad I've got the dress I have and once the days here it will all be fine x

Exactly what happened to me.. I could have written this myself. The woman in the shop got me to try mine on even though it was literally the opposite of what I wanted in every way!! I bought it last year and get married in 47 days and have zero regrets.. I adore my dress!! Trust your instincts!! If it felt like “the dress” when you tried it on then it is!! Don’t second guess yourself xx

Defo normal. What I got what the total opposite to what I thought I'd want. Mines a 1 off so also had to grab it there and then. I'm still drawn to the style I thought I wanted when I see dresses online! But then I look at the pic of mime and I love it.

UKbride Administrator 14 Oct 2017

Totally!!!!! I had a whole album of screenshots of the ones I liked but when I tried them on I couldn't stand them. My mum was perusing the rack looking for my evening dress as I wanted a long one for the day and a shorter one for the evening. Turns out that the dress she found a Brighton Belle 1950's style was perfect for both the day and night, so now I'm only changing my shoes. It was the first bridal shop we visited and I was in and out within 45 minutes lol. Only booked and pain deposits on the venue and registrar last week but had to have the dress I wasn't going to miss out on that. Xx

Yes my dress is the complete opposite to what I originally said I wanted. And different to all the ones I'd tried on before. We brought it there and then as it's an Alfred Angelo and it was a sample sale. My mum brought it down this weekend for me to try on so we could choose a tiara and see if it needed taking up with my shoes on. And I've fallen even more in love with it. It's perfect but not what I had ever imagined myself wearing xx

That is completely normal hun! This has happened to many of my friends and members of my family. My friend was given a dress to try on that was completely the opposite of everything she thought she wanted and when she came out of the fitting room we all just gasped. She looked amazing and we knew that dress was the one! You know in your heart when you have found the one. Don't doubt yourself hun :-) xxx

My aunties fell about laughing when my mum picked her dress up. She'd originally been after 20's style Jenny Packham dresses and was definitely not a ballgown kind of bride. They burst into tears when she came out in the princess dress because it was the one x

Can u see yourself walking towards your husband feeling and looking amazing?
Will he like it?
Then it's the dress.
Doubts this early on I'd say sounds like a hasty purchase
But good luck either way xx

This was me all over!
I went in to try on a dress I'd seen and when I put it on I hated it. The lady told me to go into the shop and pick some dresses to try on. I has a vision in mind and ended up buying my dress there and then and it was everything I said I didn't want. I didn't want a veil but I bought one, I didn't want lace or flowers or a champagne and ivory dress yet that's what I bought. I had a.stress 6 months before the wedding thinking I didn't like it any more and had to go back and try it on. On the day, once I put it on I completely fell in love with it and was so glad I didn't change it.

I'm completely with you on this!! I went to a local wedding fair a couple of years ago with a friend with no intention of trying anything on. It was literally just to get an idea of styles I liked.

The friend I went with coaxed me in to trying some on, and I ended up falling in love with a dress that was the complete opposite of what I'd had in mind.

Now paid for and at FIL-to be's house, I get married in 2019, and can't wait to have it on. I do have to look at pics to remind myself how gorgeous it is though 🤣 it's perfectly normal!! Chin up and good luck xx
