Can anyone comment or give me some advice on this one, I have recently got engaged and unbeknown to me my father has been acting very strange my mum has managed to figure out what it is! He has a phobia of giving a speech at our wedding it's not that he doesn't want to it's because he has a phobia and just can't do one? I wanted to know if there is anyway round this I was thinking my sister who will be chief bridesmaid to give a speech on behalf of our family? Will this seem weird on the day if my father doesn't do a father of the bride speech?
Any advice would be much appriecated.
Thanks

do you think he could record some thoughts which you could play at the wedding. or my friend ones did a presentation that took clips from loads of different films to say what he wanted to in his best man speach which was really cool. there is the really simple answer of asking an uncle or brother to do it and you dad could tell them what he would like to say. you could get him to read a poem if he thinks he could manage that

i think you needto find out what it is that scares him ....is it standing in front of people ......talking out loud ..or something else ? He can go and get coaching to get over his fear .......
My dad doesn't want to do one either so we aret having speeches easy solution!

My H2B cousin's dad didnt want to do one either as he was very nervous and also has a stutter. The Father of the groom did it instead. Alternatively the mother of the bride could perhaps do it?
My Dad is the same and he didn't do a speech at my sisters wedding (it was either he didn't do a speech or didn't come!! as it got to the point it was that bad!!) so i won't be expecting one at mine! They just had the BM and the Bride and Groom who thanked everyone for coming etc x If your dads anything like mine i would just give him time and don't put on the pressure! ( a speech isn't the b all and end all anyway as long as he's there!! x) Think my dads biggest fear was getting too emotional in front of everyone as he is very shy and reserved xx

My Dad WONT say a speech, so i asked my grandfather and he gets too emotional now since my nan had her stroke, so to include all my brothers they are each saying a few words instead :) xx

My dad is nervous about giving a speech, but to make matters worse, my H2B is shy and doesnt want to give a speech, so Im going to have to do it... not only that but his brother is the same and he doesnt want to give a speech either... i wouldnt mind but he is the best man!!!!

it's my grandad giving me away and he has already said he wont do a speech, my h2b is that shy i'll be surprised if he will luckily his brother is the best man and he is brimming with confidence! Our day do is only close family about 30, so I thought my h2b could say his thank you's and best man and I say a word or 2 and I thought it might be nice if one of our children read a poem.
I guess it hasn't helped that I've hired a vidoegrapher... no pressure then!

My dad, Df and the best man all don't want to do a speech so were not having speeches - simple as that for us.

We're not having speeches either - same thing as Ryans Mummy - so just easier not to do it all. Maybe say a few words when everyone for the evening reception arrives, but just a general 'thanks for coming, get partying' kind of thing!

Thank you for all your replies and advice, I spoke to my Dad the other day and he said he has been worrying for the last 30 years that this time might come where he would have to give a speech for either mine or my sisters wedding! he is much happier knowing he doesn't have to give a speech! I don't mind either I suppose the best man will have to come up with something really good or like some of you have said no speeches, my H2B is also nervous about giving a speech!!!
Thanks again x

I like the recording it idea, or the film one sounds really great but maybe hard if not technologically minded! (Like me).
