Information For Harefield Barn

Based on our farm in the heart of Devon, we offer a true family welcome and a bespoke service with flexibility at our core.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to realise our dream of building Harefield Barn, and to be able to share the outcome of that dream with you!

The initial idea was born when our own daughter wanted to have her wedding reception at home on the farm, but didn’t like the idea of having a “wet flappy marquee”, especially when the weather in this country can be so fickle. So we decked out one of our modern barns, carrying out all the preparations in our shorts and t-shirts during the week beforehand and sweltering in the sunshine. However, a day before the wedding, the temperature took a nose-dive, and although we all had a fantastic day, my gosh it was chilly!

That got us thinking, and Harefield Barn is the result – a purpose built space where you can have the best of both worlds; doors thrown wide to the courtyard and countryside to enjoy the outdoors on a glorious day, but the ability to be cosy, warm and dry once the sun goes down or on the days when the weather is not so co-operative.

We can’t wait to be able to reveal the final result, but in the meantime why not keep up to date with how we are getting on and share in the journey with us via our news and updates on Instagram and Facebook, or get in touch to find our more.

We have been married for too many years to mention and have three wonderful grown up children and three beautiful grandchildren.

We built our current family home on the farm over 25 years ago, and feel very privileged to have lived and worked in such a beautiful area of this fantastic county of Devon. By building Harefield Barn, we are not only able to share this lovely location with you, but during the challenging times ahead for agriculture we hope to be able to provide a secure future here for ourselves and our extended family.

Harefield's sweeping drive leads you past the large area of free car parking to the turning circle at the front of the building. Here your less able guests can be dropped off, or the bride can make her grand entrance. The wood and glass porch leads you into the hall, from where you can access the welcoming bar area, toilets, and on towards the main hall.

In the main hall, the stunning beamed ceiling gives spacious barn like proportions creating the perfect area for your ceremony and party celebrations. Huge windows allow the natural light to flood in and offer panoramic views of the beautiful Devon countryside.

The bar area has comfortable seating, along with a drinks servery complete with fridge and glass washing facilities. There is also a wood burning stove which adds to the cosy atmosphere, particularly for autumn and winter functions.

Extensive glazed bi-fold doors give access from both the bar and main hall to the pretty terrace area from where you can enjoy the amazing views, with an ever changing vista across the valley towards the hills above Honiton.

On the other side of the terrace, The Clock House provides a very special place for couples to exchange their vows as it will be one of the licenced areas, enabling civil wedding ceremonies to take place. The view beyond provides an amazing backdrop for your own personal promises to each other with all your friends and family gathered on the terrace to share the occasion. We have designed The Clock House to be slightly raised above the level of the courtyard so your guests can watch proceedings in comfort, and should the weather prove unpredictable, we can happily move everything from the terrace into the main hall. And after the ceremony; The Clock House provides the perfect place to chat with friends and catch up with the days happenings! Or as dusk falls, why not wander through the meadow to gather round the fire pit for a romantic end to a very special day.

Upstairs, the gallery area, which is furnished with comfortable sofas, allows you and your guests to relax and look down into the hall to watch the festivities. It will also have a ceremonies licence to enable you to exchange your vows, either with your guests watching from below or as an area to hold a more intimate ceremony.

Also upstairs, the Leveret Suite is set aside for the bride and her attendants to use. It has plenty of light and space for hair and make-up artists, along with a shower and toilet. The full height window with Juliet balcony gives wonderful views over the countryside towards Exeter, and is a perfect spot for your photographer to capture the atmosphere as you get ready for your big day. The Leveret Suite gives you the opportunity to make the most of the preparation time with your closest family and friends before your wedding, or take a little 'time-out' during the day.

The large catering kitchen has been designed to give plenty of space for food preparation and has a second external access for deliveries. Your caterers are welcome to come and look at the facilities available.

We have also provided a hardstanding area for catering vans adjacent to the terrace. How about keeping your food really simple with fish and chips followed by ice creams?!

All in all, we have tried to provide the most flexible and user friendly space we can, but if you have your own ideas, why not let us know, and we’ll always do our best to help if

A little more about us ................

DEBORAH
I have recently left work as a Registrar for Devon County Council to concentrate on our new business. Based in Tiverton, I was privileged to carry out birth and death registrations and take marriage notices for hundreds of local families, and in doing so, be part of their lives at such important moments.

My role also led me to conduct weddings both in the Register Office and at some of Devon's most beautiful venues. This experience has given me a great insight into both what is needed of the physical space and the care and attention required to make each event special and personal to the people involved. I can bring all this experience to bear when helping you plan your event, guiding you through the whole process, and even conducting a personal Comittment Ceremony for you if that is your wish.

My background is in administration, working initially as the Partner's Personal Assistant in a local firm of architects, followed by a period working as a Registered Childminder whilst our own children were small. Once the three of them were established into school life, I went back to work during term time in local schools, firstly as a Classroom Assistant and then as a School Administrator.

ROBERT
My father, Arthur moved with his parents and sisters from their farm near Rackenford in 1941, and that farming heritage continues to this day. Arthur married a local girl who had recently completed her training as a radiographer and they set up home at Shute Farm.

I am the eldest of their six children, and in partnership with Deborah and help from son Sam, we are proud to continue that family farming tradition. The farm has various enterprises, including 26 acres of cider apple orchards, and a variety of cereal crops.

Modern farming brings many challenges, and with an ever changing future in prospect, we hope Harefield Barn will be a great way to share this beautiful corner of Devon and help support the agricultural side of the business.
