Ok, I'm getting married in 2012 and my partner and I have deciced on a small budget of £4000. We are having our reception at a lovely country pub but it has been discussed that maybe we just get our guests to choose what they want from the menu and pay for it themselves keeping the costs down. We then would only need to rent the pub out so that no members of the public come wondering in during the speeches.
Is this too cheap or do you think this is a good idea. I;m not convinced myself and may need to put my foot down if needed.

I think this would be ok if you really had no money but for me, personally, I think if you invite people to a wedding, you feed them if at all possible.

Perhaps you could have a buffet to keep costs down?

Yep I agree with the others hun...could you not cut costs elsewhere? £4000.00 is a reasonable enough budget... there are girls on here doing it for less! I would personally look around and find a possible venue that you dont have to pay hire fees for (I did) or perhaps consider a 2 or 1 course meal instead!!!xxxx

did you see four weddings on monday the couple who had the fancy dress wedding went to ben & jerry dinner and asked all the guests to pay for the food, they went bowling!!!
l think a buffet from the pub for your guests would be a lovely gesture, £4k is a good amount to spend on your wedding, as vintage lass has suggested could you perhaps cut the budget down else where to allow for the buffet, plus speak to the pub owners people will be buying a lot a lot of drink from them so perhaps you could strike a good deal from them!!! xxx

Thanks guys, after extra discussions and me having abit of a 'bridezila' moment lol we are expanding ideas shall we say. Hehe i'm so spoilt I always get my way. If I went to a wedding and had to pay to get fed I would not be very impressed, thats what I am thinking lol

Were on a budget of around £1500 and were having a registry office wedding with a buffet. The reception will be held in a nice country pub too and we've got the upstairs function room to ourselves so no public will be allowed up there :)

It defo can be done on a small budget hun :) xx

    £4000 is a great budget :)

Vicz to be truthful I agree with you, I would be left speechless (doesnt happen very often trust me) if i were asked to pay for my own food at a wedding, unless it was a verrrry close family member. I think a buffet is definitely the way to go... then if people still feel they need something more substantial they can order off the menu without you having to tell them to ;) xXx

I would go for the buffet too! although my budget is £5000 and we've managed to feed 36 people give them 3 drinks and total for venue was £2860! that included buffet for 80 people at night! it's definately worth shopping around and dont be afraid to haggle! our venue said they would rather get the money from the bar than have any empty function suite!!

hey hun, i agree, i wouldnt want to spend the money getting to a wedding, buying a gift and new outfit then having to pay for food too, a bbq or buffet or even a picnic could be a nice way to keep costs down x

I would go for a buffet too you can always decide what food you want yourselves or add some bits like gateauxs/cheesecakes to cover a desert x

Buffet is a great idea, I have managed to get my venue for about £3000 that includes room hire (I'm having ceremony, reception meal and night do there), 3 course meal for 45 and tea and coffee, drinks package (4 drinks each) for 45, and evening buffet for 100. So you should definately be able to do you wedding for £4000, it is out there you just have to find it. Dont forget to haggle we are in a recession and the companies need your business. I saw on four weddings a couple that had their reception in a pub that did 2 4 1 on meals and everbody was suitably impressed with the food.

how about a big BBQ if the pub has decent gardens? or a hog roast? I have priced one for £800 to feed 120 people! But a buffet would be a lot cheaper.

You may find that if you get the pub to do the buffet that they won't charge you room hire or will discount - thereby improving your budget! Its worth asking! Def think you should feed people! xx
