Hi ladies, sorry for the long and maybe TMI post!

I've been reading a few articles/blogs about this recently but was just wondering if anyone here could share any advice or have experienced anything similar. Basically I have been on the pill (Microgynon 30) for the last 6/7 years since I first got with hubs. I'd say for the last 3/4 years or so I've been really grumpy and moody, completely unmotivated, tired all the time and have had reduced sex drive. Even average every day jobs just seem like such a challenge sometimes, like washing up, cooking dinner, walking the dog, cleaning the house, and my general mood has caused some problems between hubs and I.

I've never really been able to explain why I feel this way - there's no pressing reason why I should feel like that, I just feel like there is a cloud hanging over me all the time. I'm very happy with my husband, obviously we are relatively newly weds, we've just bought our first house together, my job is going great, our family and friends are well and healthy, etc etc. I've been taking the pill for so long that I just think I've come to accept that feeling this way is "normal", when in reality it's probably not - taking hormone pills for every 21 days out of 28 for 6/7 years straight surely has to have some affect on your body.

J made a throw away comment this morning that coming off the pill would probably benefit me and help me lose weight - as I've been trying to lose weight recently and have been struggling despite eating healthy and exercising. It is something I've been thinking about lately but not to the point where I really considered come off it, as it has worked for me (after having a bad experience with the injection) and is convenient, I know J doesn't really like wearing condoms (although he said he would if I wanted to try it) and it's easy to just come off it when we do want to start trying for a baby. But now I'm thinking it might be worth coming off it and seeing how it goes... It would be so nice to just go back to being "me" again. At the moment I feel as though some of the best years of my life are being stolen from me when I should be loving life and having the best time ever.

So my question is, has anyone else come off the pill and if so how did you find it? I know that it can take around 3-6 months for your hormones to balance back out and return to normal, and have read that you can often experience pregnancy symptoms at first like headaches and nausea, but is it worth riding it out?

    xx

Hi flossie, so sorry your feeling like this. I came off that pill for similar reasons and I felt so much better even after a month. Yes you can get pregnancy symptoms but it really is worth riding it out. I agreed with my partner that I would come off it until I felt more normal and then go and speak to the nurse/dr about a different contraceptive (condoms make us both sore, sorry for tmi).

I'm now on the hormone coil as the new pill failed us and I got pregnant lol. (Best thing that ever happened to us!) My advice would be speak to your hubby and make a plan with him, then speak to a family planning nurse/dr when your ready to go back on something. They will be able to help you work out what would be best for you to go on to after and they wont push you to have anything you don't want.

Hope your feeling more your normal self soon. Best of luck x

    hi Flossie,

I have to say I had the exact same problem when I was using it plus some other side effects. I was struggling to do daily tasks, was tired ALL the time. Like you have said I was grumpy and angry and niggly.

I went in for all sorts of blood tests, checking my thyroid and checking for early menopause and everything came back clear time and time again. Until I had the thought that it could be my pill (the same one you are using).

I used up the last pack and just stopped using it, within a month or two all of the symptoms were gone . And i do mean all of them. I had the contraceptive rod in for a while but I reacted even worse to that but that's my personal experience so currently condoms are my only option as I'm not sure I want the coil.

I would definitely give it a go of coming off though x

Thanks for your responses ladies, it's really reassuring to hear I'm not alone in feeling this way and that you have both had positive experiences coming off of it. I have spoken to hubby again this morning and he is keen for me to come off it and see how it goes.

I'm not sure I would be interested in any other forms of contraception to be honest - hopefully in the not too distant future we will start thinking about trying for a baby anyway, so the longer term methods like the coil probably wouldn't be the best option. Hubs has said he is more than willing to just use condoms - always seems like such a faff but it's not too much of a problem really is it - especially if I turn back into a nice wife and not a horrible one all the time!! :-)

    Hi Flossie,

Yep this does happen I've swapped different types of pill, I used to take microgynon 30 and I'm now on gederal. When you come off it, its a bit weird as your body fights back a little bit, you might have a heavier period a bit more pain than usual but it is worth it.

I tired the mini pill after microgynon works exactly the same just a little less hormones in it maybe that could be an option for you.

This was really interesting to read I'm on Microgynon have been for 10 years almost and never attributed it to my grumpiness and low moods/sex drive etc but reading this makes me think maybe I should talk to my Dr about it. I tried the coil and didn't it like and have always been good at taking the pill but maybe it is time to try a different one.

Thanks for sharing Flossie and I hope you feel more yourself once your body get rids of it x

I just want to concur with the other ladies - I was on Microgynon 30, gosh it was before I had kids, so was probably 15 years ago and it was a major contributor to my poor mental health at the time - to the point I flunked college as I was so emotionally unbalanced. Dr's took me off and I got a lot better. They did however put me on a different brand of pill and 5 months later I was pregnant with my eldest as that one just didn't work!!

I have avoided the pill since, and have opted the last few times for the implant for convenience - but due to how it makes me feel I will be having that out soon, and will not be having it again.

And as great as contraceptive pills etc are, I do think our bodies benefit massively from NOT being pumped with hormones.

So yes I think it will be good for you (especially as they do not really recommend long term use of the pill anyway) and hopefully you will find the benefit of your own natural rhythm :)

Hey, I too was on pill cerazetta and came off it for about 2 months in Jan- I did lose a bit of weight but also cut out carbs- I did however get my sex drove back in a big way and just couldn't get enough- oh was like I think you need to go back on the pill as was in overdrive- so I agree that you need to find a pill that is right for you as they do cause different things in different people xx

I started on microgynon and was suicidal, came off that then various pills later, generally they would be fone for about 1-2 years then start getting suicidal but stated gaining too much weight so went on the mini pill (tried two of them I think) and totally lost my sex drive, didn't even want OH touching me for a hug or anything! I thought what is the point on being on anything if I can't bear to be touched so now I am not on anything - we don't use condoms as they make us both sore but good old fashioned withdrawal (we are not bothered if we get pregnant). Now that I am 4 months from my wedding though we are being super careful as don't want to be pregnant on my wedding day unless it is very early - just a personal choice.

So I would say yes come of it but as others have said speak to your OH and then your family planning nurse. And don't listen about your can't get pregnant after coming off the pill, my friend a pregnant the next month so just be wary.

    Hope you sort it x
