Just been looking through some Wedding magazines I've got, namely of real brides and their days. One thing that struck me was the majority of them are holding horseshoes with their bouquet.

Are these essential? Have found one I like online, but not sure if they're meant as a gift rather than the bride to purchase.

I never got one but my mil handed me one after the ceremony. I thought there was something about a female member gave it to you.

The luckiest horse shoe is supposed to be one from a hind hoof of a grey mare

I didn't have one, only because I don't like the look of them. They do lots of different ones, and even personalised ones if you want one.

    I never bothered having one.

My parents had their wedding cake in the shape of a horseshoe.

I was given them as a gift. I had one from MIL, two from friends and one from our friends Lurchers :)

I wasn't given a horseshoe but my mum and her partner gave me a chimney sweep before we set off for the Church. I thought it was a horseshoe when they gave it to me, but the chimney sweep was great. Basically exactly the same idea it's meant for luck

It's meant to bring good luck and is given to the couple after the wedding. I wouldn't buy one yourself but if it is something you really want maybe mention it to your mom/MIL

I didn't have one, it wasn't something that mattered to me. I don't think it's such a well known tradition as some others, so it's not something that guests are likely to be looking for.

30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

I didn't buy and for the wedding but I got given 3 horseshoes on my wedding day. I held them round my wrist for a while but as one of them was a real horseshoe it got heavy. So enede up giving them to my mum lol! I'm sure you will get at least one on the day. X

Unusually this is something my OH had heard of but not me.
Must be a less well known tradition so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I think it was much more common in the 60s/70s :)
