Wedding Forum - Charity favours yay or nay?...

We have pretty much decided to have charity favours instead of sweets or shot glasses (that was actually our last idea) when we mentioned it to FSIL she turned her nose up. TBH I could care less about her opinion on anything (that's a whole other rant) but it got me thinking. If you were at a wedding and a charity donation had been made instead of a favour, would you feel like you'd been hard done by? I don't want to upset my guests, but let's be honest no ones day is going to be ruined by a lack of sweets at the table,is it?

My friend did charity donations for her favours, I thought it was a lovely idea. Can't remember which charity she donated to, but there were cards at each place setting explaining the different things the donations had paid for.

We did them for c@nc3r r53@rch. It was something that was close to both our hearts as we both lost people very close to us to cancer.

I lost a very good friend this year so mine will be to BHF and his I think will be to the hospice who cared for his nan. You'd have to be pretty hard hearted to take offence at those choices I think.

I agree. I say do it. For us it was more important than spending money on something we didn't believe people would take and keep.

In my experience most favors are left behind. Guests aren't that interested in having some amazing favor so do something meaningful.

OHs cousin did favours for C@ncer and we all got pins which most people immediately pinned to their outfit. If the cause is important to you, then a little less profit in H@ribos will make no difference to your guests. X

If anyone does have a problem with it, its not like they woukd say anything anyway. How awful would they look going "why haven't we got got sweets as favours instead of these pin badges for charity?". x

I think it's a lovely idea and if it's something close to your hearts then why shouldn't you? I wouldn't turn up to a wedding expecting to be given something... if anyone turned their nose up at having a donation made to charity rather than receiving a small gift then that says a lot about them! You're already paying for them to attend the day.. for their meals(s), drink, etc.. xx

We have been talking this week about doing a charity donation instead of favours, the last two weddings ive been too there have been so many favours left on the table, so I thought why not give it to charity. I never actually thought about people being funny about it. xx

To be honest I think a charity donation is the way to go CR and the local hospital that cared for my mum until she passed away were so amazing. I think it is such a nice thing to do. As you say, there are many favors left at themed it's not worth the money xx

This is what we are thinking of doing too, I'd rather the money went to a good cause. Good idea with the chocolate coin IDL :)

Sorry to jump on the thread but I love the idea of charity favors (I don't know why anyone would turn there nose up, especially when you are spending a huge amount of money to feed and entertain them on what is YOUR day, why should they expect gifts too?!) I was wondering how much did you donate per guest? If I were to give "gift" favors this would be something I would cut costs on aiming to do it for about £1 per guest but with only 65 guests I would feel like this would be a pretty rubbish donation so just wondering what others donated?

Strange, I did reply to you mrsd2b but it didn't post. Suggested donations ranged between £1-£2.50 per person. The £1 ones you got a little poem on a card for each guest explaining what had been done. The more expensive ones you got a pin for each person, so they would still have something to keep from the wedding. I do feel the same as you to be honest, we are feeding,entertaining and providing a fair bit of drink for our guests. We aren't asking for gifts or money or anything either.
