My partner wants to wear his family tartan to the wedding so I'd like to surprise him by buying him the outfit for Christmas, and am hunting for bargains but want the real thing. So my question is when buying the Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat what am I looking for? As they seem to range between £34.99-£199 I don't want to just take my chance so would like as much info as possible if anyone's able to help please :) does it need to be 100% wool and should it have satin or just be wool? And is there any other signs that they are a good quality jacket n waistcoat?

Kilt I am going for a 8yard 16oz wool ( hope this is the correct one)
    Thank you :)

the main way to tell good quality is to feel the material

Prince Charlie is the closest to a tuxedo jacket. It is tailored shorter in both the front and the back so as to look proper when worn with a kilt, the tails just the right length and embellished with buttons to match the front. The Prince Charlie kilt jacket is almost always worn with a three-button vest and with a simple black bow tie; a normal neck tie just doesn’t look exactly right with the cut of this jacket or with the silk lapels, though a formal silk or lace ascot is sometimes worn.

I haven't got the foggiest about kilts but is there a shop near you which sells kilts? you could always go and get as much info as you can from them and have a good look and feel of what your buying before ordering anything

I know you want it to be a surprise but I'm afraid to BUY one outright its not going to be possible. The whole outfit will have to be tailored for him specifically and will not be cheap if you want good quality. A kilt looks simple enough but they have to measured specifically for the wearer (eg the kilt length should just touch the floor when the wearer is on their knees. My OH is hiring his tartan outfit whilst his BMAN will be wearing his own which has family bought for him and his requires tailoring for the jacket and waistcoat as well as he is very slim but tall.

I know the sizes he needs as have been and tried them on and have his measurements but the shops quite expensive for kilts and suits so was looking at buying online but didn't want to order too cheap coz of the quality. But I know a lot of online business don't have the overheads that shops do. Have most of it ready to order just struggling with the jacket and making sure it's the right quality without breaking the bank x

That is a tough one. Best advise I would suggest is find out the materials used in the ones you like and see if they match up in the materials info on the webiste
