There has been much discussion on speeches today so thought an official thread would be a good idea so to have them all in one place for you to discuss.

So if it is a bride, groom, best man, father etc give your ideas here.

Will follow this with interest. My OH doesn't like speaking in front of people either and if I know him like I do, he'll leave it until the last minute!

its 2 weeks until our wedding to the day and my partner has dropped on me that hes not doing a speech. he wants to drop the speeches completely but the others have already put a effort into doing theirs. i also feel like we should at least say thanks and hand out the gifts. i know hes shy but 2 weeks before wedding this is stressing me out. i have said about me talking instead of him but have no idea what to say or if i should say anything in regards to him not doing a speech, im worried how it would come across. i dont particularly want to do a speech but really dont want to abandon all the speeches when i know the effort already put in by others and that it would upset others to say no at this stage. any ideas on what i could sa

Sarah, speeches are not a must. My step dad hates doing them, I did not even think about asking him to do one as I knew he'd be uncomfortable, so if you feel comfortable doing it, then you do it on behalf of you both.

Speeches should be personal to you and your families. If you don't feel comfortable then don't have them!

My friend didn't have speeches and they weren't missed, I've been to other weddings where the speeches and gift giving took over an hour. Both were perfect for those couples.

We decided to have speeches but kept them minimal. We gave the gifts privately in the morning before the wedding.

My husband said a short "thank you" to everyone and said how stunning we all looked. I stood up and said a short but heartfelt toast to absent friends (mentioning my mum, uncle and husbands aunt who we lost).
My dad stood up and said "everyone Leasa loves is in this room" and he sat back down.

Less than 5 mins and it was over!

Do what is right for you and what your wedding party is comfortable with...just remember that long nervous speeches get boring and people will get restless. It might be better to just say thank you, and get on with the celebrating.

My h2b hates the idea of doing a speech with all eyes on him (he's only just coping with people watching him saying our vows). When we set the date I said I would happily do the speech on the day (I did the speech at my sisters wedding instead of the best man). However I do keep trying to drop not so subtle hints that it would be nice, when we do the thank yous and present giving, if he can at least say, out loud, that I look pretty and he's happy I'm now his wife, but he doesn't respond so I guess I just have to wait for the day!!

At my first marriage my Step-dad was adamant he wasn't going to do a speech, right up until the day. Then after the other speeches (groom, best man, father of groom) he decided actually he will. He did it all completely off the cuff and it was the best speech out of all of them!

My new H2B is very shy and a bit of an introvert so we've decided that we're going to say a few words together to thank everyone for coming etc, we're then having other speeches as optional as my son is determined to say a few words, and the best man might have a thing or two to say, but it is totally fine if no one wants to say anything either.

I will be doing the grooms speech on the day. My fiancée has a fear of speaking in public, her dad will be doing the father of the bride speech, and her 2 besties will be doing the best woman speech.

Although I'm nervous about speaking in front of all those people, I can't wait to tell them all how we met (she hated me and the feeling was mutual lol), and how much I love her and wouldn't be where I am without her!

    That's lovely Emma!

My OH gets very nervous but I said it woukd be nice for him to say a few words :-)

He's hinted that he might do something like a pre recorded video or done thing- I am happy with what ever he wants to do and knowing me I'll probably jump up,and see a few things on the day!

Have you seen the funniest "lost best man speech"? It's fab! If you've not seen it go on U Tu83 and search Best man's video stunt steals show at footballer's wedding (it's from 88C N3w5).

Hi, I will be doing the traditional "grooms"speech on the day, I have soooo much I want to say, a couple of funny stories, and plenty of people I want to thank. I have just timed my speech and it's 10 minutes!!! I'm worried that this is too long to go on for, as we'll still have the father of the bride, plus our best women speech. I've cut out everything I can bare to cut out. Do you think that this is just too long to expect the guests to listen ?

Usually at family weddings we've done a sweepstake on how long the speeches take, but I think this is taking it a bit far lol

I think if you're throwing in a few funny stories too it should be fine. We went to OH's cousins wedding last year and she made a speech followed by her lovely new wife and between the 2 of them, it took around 10 minutes but it was so lovely listening to the stories etc that it didn't matter how long it took.

I agree, keep the funny stories separate if you can to keep it going.
