We're getting married in November and sent our save the dates about a year and a half agonised then invitations in May this year. Mainly did it early and half the guests are having to travel 2-3 hours to the venue.

Some people say it's never too early, but I strongly disagree. I have received save the dates really early, and lost them and forgotten about them as I don't like clutter in my house. We sent ours out 6 months before our wedding, but I think 6-9 months is reasonable.

We sent ours last month for our July 2015 wedding. We did it a year early because we guests travelling from all around the world. If the majority of our guests were local I would have left it until later. As clairenina said, some people lose them or forget. I think it totally depends on your individual guests though x

We sent ours out about 11 months in advance as it was in the school holidays and we had a few families/teachers coming who go away in the summer holidays and book quite far in advance, so we wanted to be sure to give them a heads up. I'd say send them no earlier than a year before, so yes, IMO it's definitely too early to send them now for a May 2016 wedding; you run the risk of people forgetting.

I sent our save the dates a year before :) I would only send them to day guests though as I made the mistake of giving them to everyone and some assumed they would be there all day instead of evening only.

For May 2016 I would probably send save the dates about August time 2015 and then the invitations early January time. I think you can send them too early as like said above, people are likely to lose them. I would only consider sending a little bit earlier if the date falls inside school holidays so that people won't book holidays with the kids or on a bank holiday weekend etc.

We have decided not to bother with save the dates as everyone knows when our day is anyway so would just be an unnecessary expense. We get married June 2016 and will just be sending out invitations in January 2016 x

I wouldn't send the save the dates until at least the year before (not exactly a year before but sometime in 2015) I think it depends on when you are planning on sending your invites as well. If you are sending your invites only a few months before the wedding then I would send the save the dates more like a year to 9 months before, but if you are sending invites 6 months before then you can send save the dates a little earlier then that.

If you are worried about certain people booking holidays or something then just make sure all the important people know the date before you send the save the dates anyway. We ended up not sending most of our save the dates as they were tiny so just handed them out when we saw people, most people knew the date before getting the save the dates anyway and we still have a pile of save the dates in our wedding folder.. (I blame oh for that though as I made some gorgeous one's up that I was going to have printed as post cards but he wasn't so keen and we ended up ordering these others which were way too small for the post.)
