    Hi all,

We've been looking at suits and wondering whether to hire or buy? I quite like the idea of buying the suits in the sales (looks like similar cost to hiring but added bonus of keeping suit) but runs the risks of not getting the sizes we need.

Also, are you paying for all the groomsmen or are they paying? If you are asking them to pay how do you ask?

Sorry for all the questions xx

My OH is buying his suit. We wanted something he could wear again, esp as we will likely have a fair few weddings to attend over the next 5 years, and we wanted something that fitted properly, and that was good quality; neither of which we found at hire places. He's also just going for a regular lounge suit rather than anything fancy like tails, making it easier to buy one.

With the groomsmen, we're just asking them to wear a grey suit, which 3 out of 4 already have, and the one who doesn't would have bought one for the wedding anyway (he also has several weddings coming up so needed to buy one to wear anyway). We're providing the ties and obv the button-holes.

If we wanted a specific or matching look though we'd have paid, like we did for the bridesmaids.

Basically I think it depends on the look you're going for. If you want a very formal look, you'd probably be better off hiring; but buying allows people to get something that actually fits. I do think though that if you want them to match you should pay, or at least contribute a certain amount eg you can get a decent suit for about £80, so you could offer to give them that, and if they decide on something more expensive they pay the difference.

I was going to buy in the sales but then met a rental guy at a wedding show and who offered me a really good deal. For every 4 suits (incl. waistcoats and cravats) we're getting one free, so we're getting 10 suits for about £550. We're paying for the suit hire but also want to keep control of what the boys wear - so far 3 of OH's 5 groomsmen have turned around and said 'I already have a suit, why do I need to wear a different one?' so we figured it would be less hassle all round if we just pick something out and then tell them to go in and get measured.

My groomsmen offered to pay for there's, such is very kind of them, we thought about buying but the kind of suit we want is specific and to buy would be 3x the cost of hire and is not really the kind of style you would wear again (regentsy)

We've hired suits for H2B and the two best men, so that they will all match. We'll ask the ushers to wear their own suits, as I'm sure they will all already have at least one smart suit, and then we will provide ties to match the colour scheme.

we were going to use suits already owned (hubby was best man's best man) but then we went to another wedding where the groom etc were in tails and Dan loved it so much we decided to hire tails for him, the best man and FOB. The ushers/FOG wore their own suits and we gave them ties to wear.

We're hiring ours. OH's Mum wanted him to buy but we didn't really see the point as he doesn't wear one for work an he's highly unlikely to need it anytime soon. We've got 6 suits including cravat and waistcoat for £675. We got a discount for booking early. The hire shop we went to were brilliant and convinced H2B to give tails a go (it fits in with our theme and the guy said if he went for a lounge suit he wouldn't feel like he was getting married). We're hiring them from the same place as H2B's Sister. They went for lounge suits and it turned out to be more expensive than the tails. We think it's possibly because we got our early booking discount.

Ours are bought...from river island as h2b wanted a more skinny fitting suit and there's not a huge amount you can do with altering a hired suit as ultimately it goes bk and has to fit someone else so we wanted something that fit perfectly. The groomsmen are buying their own at ours x

I really wanted my h2b to buy rather than hire. My dad and brother have bought from Sltrs - a 3 piece for £89 - I reckon it would be in that region to hire anyway.

Ours is quite informal, mso the boys are going to be in black waistcoats, white shirts, red ties. My male attendant is in black waistcoat, red shirt, white tie. OH is in black waistcoat, white shirt, red and white tie. We've bought the waistcoats and ties, so they only need to provide black trousers and the shirts.

We were going to hire but the ones h2b wants are £105 to hire and for £150 we can buy them. We only have h2b, best man and 2x dads to get so have asked them to pay the diff between hiring and buying. They have all said yes. They all said they'd be spending more if they were just there as guests abs this way they get a 3 piece suit for £50

thank you all for your help, think we will probably buy (and hope we can all get the same suit in the sales - will try a few of those shops you recommended) , now the problem is all the guys agreeing on a suit colour i wanted light grey (theme is yellow and mint) with white shirt and mint or yellow tie which H2B was happy with but now his dad says doesn't like light grey and wants dark instead! Argh!!!
