Hi all...I know this is going to sound really stupid, and I should know better, but I'm a bit lost/confused atm. We have a 6 year old daughter already, but didn't find out that I was pregnant until I was 28 weeks gone. The pregnancy tests came back negative numerous times, blood tests included, so the doctors wrote me off as suffering with stress and depression. This time, I have all the same symptoms again...sort of. The last time, I had periods the entire time, this time (I don't know for sure yet that I'm actually pregnant), I've had a period for one day, that was it.... however, the 1st pregnancy test I took came back positive, the next one came back inconclusive and the next two negative. Personally, I'm convinced I've got a bug, my h2b and everyone else (nurse over the phone included), are convinced that I am pregnant. Any advice, or thoughts, please? I'm really freaking out and don't know what to think or do tbh :( xoxox

I would get an appointment with your doctor if I was you Hun. Tell him what happened last time and maybe ask for an ultrasound so that you can be sure either way? But don't panic just yet (easier said than done I know) xxx

I already have done...she's convinced that she could feel the baby, but the ultrasound isn't for anther 2weeks :( I just want it over with and know what's going on with me. One nurse says I'm pregnant, another Dr says that it's my pancreatitis (or something like that)? I just can't take feeling like this much more. These headaches and this sickness is horrible :( xoxox

I think your pregnant, I don't think you can get a false positive on a pregnancy test. You can get false negatives but not false positives....

Sounds daft, but could you take another test... do it first thing in the morning.

You can't get a false positive. There is no way for a test to read positive with no HCG present, so if it's positive you're pregnant. Can you book an early scan so you know for definite. I had one at 5 weeks with my son as blood tests were inconclusive. x

I agree with the other ladies, you can't get a false positive on pregnancy test, for a positive there must be levels of high in your body for it to pick up on. Have you any idea how far you could be? When you lay down if you have a feel just above your pubic bone, put some light pressure but not too hard if you can feel a firm roundish lump that will be your uterus, you can usually feel this from around 14-16 weeks .but yeah I would definitely go for an ultrasound!! X

You can get false positives if you test before period is due. I'm under gynae consultant due to previous ectopic pregnancies and he has told me under no circumstances do I test until I'm late as pregnancy tests can pick up the hormone changes just before period is due, I've seen it happen so many times to the ladies in my support group who test early only for period to turn up on due date.

Given what the op has said it does sound like she could be pregnant your gp can do a simple blood test to check your hcg leves.

Just too add, if you are pregnant and are relatively far along a home pregnancy test may not detect pregnancy. They have an upper limit for detecting hcg levels. If your levels are higher than around 10,000miu a test may not pick it up anyway. With your last pregnancy it appears that your body doesn't metabolise hcg properly anyway so defo get that scan and know for sure. Good luck x

You can actually get false positive, for example if men who have high testosterone or liver probs take the test it will come up positive. I would say try and get a scan sooner, but with the nhs you might not be able to. Sorry I couldn't be of more use just wanted to point out (as a dr) you can get false positive tests x

I was under the impression that you can get false positives, but it's very unusual.

I would a) make sure you wait until after your period to test, and test first thing in the morning using an early response and b) see your GP regardless of the outcome/result. I'm sure that if you explain the situation and what happened previously that they will be able to request a scan so that you have a definite answer.

    Good luck!

Thats rubbish you have to wait so long for the scan, I'd hate not knowing :( I hope you feel better soon whether you are pregnant or not. Will you be happy if you are pregnant or is it not a good time? xxx

If you have tested too soon it can give out a false positive as the human chorionic gonadotropin is not detected in the very early stages. As a professional, I'd advise you to go to the GP and get professional advice as they may well be able to refer you to the epau for an early scan, especially with your previous history

Just in case, get sarted on the folic acid and vitamin D supplements (and any other vitamins you may be deficient in) right away. Remember to make sure your supplements contain less than 10,000IU of vitamin A (assuming you'll be getting some vitamin A from dietary sources most pregnancy supplements tend to contain around 4.000IU).

Hi there, thank you for your replies everyone. As it stands, we're assuming that I'm not. The colds gone away n I don't feel as rough. I'm having a scan to ease my h2bs mind, but they won't see me until the end of the month at the earliest =/ I just want it all over with tbh. It's not so much a bad thing, but we're not in the best of situations for it at the moment :( xoxox
