Well.... At first glance the street appears lovely, there are the odd few that introduced themselves and we are able to just walk into their house to see them and they us.

However, then you get the kid next door playing with make shift flame throwerers (also known as aerosol cans and lighters). Thankfully this kid has grown up alot over the 4yrs we've been here. We get on with him better than we used to. He even helped me put my eldest new bed together on Sunday, only asked for some help getting it up the stairs! He has been lovely the past few weeks. He helped narrow down the time scale for when our landy got vandalised, think he may have even helped clean it off without being asked.

Then you notice the drug deals happening.... There are 2 houses im aware of, one out the front, o.e out the back (everyone uses the back doors on our street as they face the road.) Then you get thefts happening. Then a flat gets burgled. (all of this is done by people on the street).

Then a dealer gets patted down in front of us and days later someone spray paints our landy for no reason other than thinking on that we "grassed" on them.

    Are neighbours important?
Some of them are, some of them can suprise you in a good way. So of them will find out you black out without warning and will make it their business to pop over a few times a day for a "chat" when really you know they are just checking im ok and haven't fallen into a coma. Other neighbours however.... Need to go to juvy!!!!

One side has just bought the house - renovating it and not moved in yet although they're there every day. We've gotten chatting to them quite a lot as my OH is a joiner and well into doing houses up. Looking forward to them moving in and we'll go round with some beers or wine. As for the other side - they're an odd couple with 2 dogs that bark day and night, sometimes howl (especially when Coronation St is starting/ending!) He's not too bad, sometimes friendly and chatty, sometimes ignorant as hell - she however is a battle axe - doesn't speak and we can hear her shouting at everyone in the house on a daily basis. In short we could do with some soundproofing and then it'll all be hunky dory!! xx

When I lived with my mum nee our nextdoor neighbours really well , there daighter who wer 5/6 years older were like big sisters too me, playing games etc, looking after be at primary. And im still close to them and one of the daughters who reguarly is at home visiting her mum like me.

On the other side we always seem to have had dodgy people , a women who seemed to want to kill her son sn vice versa, and now people who seem to be drugies an are always in an out or prison for one thing or another.

Our neighbours at our current address, we have quite nice neightbours, just had someone buy the house adjoining ours, on other side we have a nice couple who are very friendly and when we first mived in helped us change our tyre as it had a ouncure an we had no idea. Next to them we have a lovely ladie who I alreasy knew due to her doing bowls with my mum an also happens to be landladys sister, an we quite often pop in for a chat, and she lets us borrow anything we need, we currently have her ladder, and she more or less gave us her lawnmower.

Then all around I know most of the people or they know we. My bestfriend from primary lives 2 doors up with her mum. And my bestfriend/adopted gran lives down the road. Aling with a load of other people. I feel so safe here surrounderd by people who I know if anything were to happen.

When we moved in the neighbours on either side introduced themself. We live in a semi detached house and the neighbours joined on gave us a bottle of wine and the neighbours across the street gave us wine too :) A few months ago we got new neighbours in the house joined on to us. They are a lovely couple and we took in a bottle of wine and introduced ourselves. I felt it was nice to pass on a nice gesture. I feel it is important to have good neighbours who will look out for you. xx

The street we have moved into is lovely really. The neighbours are nice, one knocked the door to say hello and welcome and how nice it was to see someone living in the house after it had been empty for so long after building it. My other street was larger, and even though I had a few friends there we all used to keep ourselves to ourselves really.

i loved my old neighbour .. she was an elderly lady who was a sweetheart, we would go round to do anything from changing a light bulb to calling an ambulance when she had a fall ... if we had a bbq we would always take a plate round so that she felt part of it all .

i now have a young couple who are no trouble really but dont really want to know about anything, Mr Lala tells me i shouldn't judge people by my standards as i only get disappointed ... at the moment im off work and on crutches with mr lala working away ( which they know ) not once have i ever been asked if i need anything thing ..

we do have one couple who live 4 doors up who are most amazing people they are the ones who people ask to look after cats houses etc ..but apparently im the only one who buys them gifts for helping me out , As for just knowing names i think there is only 6 houses out of about 50 that i know who they are , there is a chap who lives across the road who has NEVER spoken and we have been here 11 years !!!!!

this is why i want to move ( if only Mr lala can get a job back here ) to a village with a good community feel

The only way we know our neighbours is because our housemate had to round and apologise to the husband as he had caught our housemate having sex in the orchard while he was walking his dog..... Awkward and not the way we wanted to be introduced!! Turns out he thought it quite funny but my OH and I weren't so easily amused!!

We made the effort to introduce ourselves to our neighbours when we moved in. We live in a little close but our house is on the main road and our garden backs onto the communal parking area that everyone uses. We know everyone and speak to everyone. We go round to the elderly lady next door (I say elderly but she acts like a 20 something lady), we have wine with her, walk her dog, she loves our dog. When I had a sickness bug she bought me round a bunch of get well flowers. I've had more flowers from her than I've ever had from h2b LOL. We love it so much, we're dreading have to move when we expand as we only have 1 bedroom. Next door has asked that we don't move because she's had some awful tenants, bless her. We look After her like we would our grandparents, and we love her!! Her and her daughter will definitely be invited to our evening reception and our wedding is on her birthday :D xx

I think it might just be because Im from the Western Isles, but I knew who lived in every house on my particular island, and they knew me. Where I am now in Glenelg, I know everyone in the street, and have been in all their houses and they have been in mine. I think that again is just the way it is here and in island communities. You get a lot more nosiness haha and closeness. We are a friendly bunch!

Ours is an incredibly mixed street. I really don't like the neighbours either side of us. One side is the type who are banging and crashing around at 2am. Has too many bodies in the house and not enough bedrooms and also plays music at 6am in the morning at full blast. On the other side we have the thugs with dumped cars everywhere, the garden is a tip, they have been reported multiple times and one even headbutted the other side of them neighbours for no reason at got arrested! I can't wait to move away from them all! X

I talk to my neighbours either side, one side has two daughters similar ages to mine so they play together in the gardens and we have private gated parking behind so they sometimes play ball out there in the holidays when there's no cars there in the day.
When I lived at my old house I know neighbours three doors either side plus the four houses across the road ... But I have a school across the rd from my house now so a bit different x

Growing up my parents knew all the neighbours down the street and we were in and out of everyones houses, it had a real community feel to it. Now my other half and I live in a falt on the outskirts of London, we may say hello to neighbours in passing but thats about it. It really is ashame though and when we move I really would like to have the same connection with our neighbours my parents did.

Bit late to the party but just going through the debate threads ;)

Neighbours are not important to me. As long as they are nice enough and don't make too much noise or cause any other nuisance, then we will get on just fine. I say the odd 'hello' to my neighbours when I see them but I'm definitely not the type to spend ages chatting to them or inviting them in for coffee or anything like that. I like to keep myself to myself when I'm at home x

Far from important to me, in our old place we was on of 4 flats on our floor, 2 were drug dealers other was a old gent who we got on with and who was sad to see us go!
Where we live now we have one person above us.. Most we've said is hello and asked about the garden and either side us we don't know and havnt even seen.

AIL however has fab neighbours to point one side is invited to most parties and her whole section of the street are all really nice :)

We have lived here for 2 years now and our 'attached' neighbours (we live in a semi detached house) have never spoken to us. The neighbours on the other side always make the effort to talk to us. They helped us out when I accidentally locked us out on the day we moved in. I didn't realise the front door was a slam shut door and left the keys indoors! H2B had to climb through an upstairs window. They can be quite noisy with parties and stuff in the summer (they still have teenagers living at home), but generally they're fine. We had a few issues with their visitors blocking our driveway but that sorted itself out. Amazing what a note on a windscreen can do ;o) And they have 10 cats and 3 noisy dogs :o/

The rest of our street is pretty quiet. The first Christmas we were here we had a few christmas cards from various houses on the street but it didn't happen last year.

I loved my neighbours when I was living in my flat.

The house we're living in now, the neighbours we share our driveway with are lovely and we get on really well but the house joining us (we're a semi detached), she is a miserable moo. I don't have the time of day for her cos she is miserable. Don't like her at all. There are a couple of misery guts on the road who I just can't be bothered with but everyone else is either typical twitchy curtains neighbours who will wave and say hi or just smile when they see you, more of an acknowledgement thing. We're pretty much the youngest on our road though at the moment so not expecting to be friends with them all.

It's nice to be friendly with at least one neighbour but we're so busy I'm not fussed about the rest tbh.

I got to know the neighbours where I was lodging before the wedding, as they supported my landlady through a difficult time. Both of them came out to see me leave for the church. I've got to know the neighbours where we are now too, but don't do much more than a friendly greeting. I have got talking to one of them about her cats a few times (I love cats). It's good to be friendly with the people around I think, and there is some support there. One neighbour is always really good about helping with painting the fence or putting it back up when the wind blew it over.

I've been both very unfortunate with neighbours, but very, very lucky too!
I've moved at least 4 times since I was younger, and when we were growing up in one street, an old couple basically adopted us like grandchildren, as both sets of ours lived at least 4 hours away and never really saw us. We went round there every day after school, and at least once on weekends. They were the greatest people that I ever had the fortune to meet!
Then we moved house, and luckily moved 6 doors down from my best friend, and another close friend. But unfortunately, and very shockingly, we had an alcoholic and drunk husband with their 6 year old daughter move in next door about a month after we moved in, within a couple of years, the abusive Step father had murdered his Step Daughter and almost killed his wife! Terrible, terrible situation :( still upsets me to this day, as we used to play in the garden with the little, neglected girl, and were only kids ourselves when we realised what happened.
The wife ended up drinking herself to death a few years later, then we had a young family move in, who at first we didn't like, but after a while, we ended up getting on with really well.
I moved out of my mum's house last year, and we absolutely love our neighbours in our new street! Our next door neighbour on one side is a policeman and his wife and kids, who we exchange Christmas and birthday gifts and cards with, and the other side just moved in recently, turns out I used to work with the woman a few years ago, and luckily she's a lot nicer to live next door to, than to work with!
The other neighbours all work, walk their dogs, and even have a street Rounders team! How cute is that? It's also a neighbourhood watch area, so we have the usual curtain twitchers, but I'm a very anxious person, so I really like that about the street, as I like having the security of both nosey neighbours, and a policeman next door!
We do Christmas cards for the immediate neighbours, and this year, we will be extending those to the ones opposite us on the street, and a few others, who were kind enough to offer us to park on their drives whilst we were having the curb lowered and ours done!
I think the right neighbours can make all the difference. And the wrong neighbours can make you cry yourself to sleep at 13 years old because they Killed your playmate..
