Ok this might sound a bit odd but we are having a photographer for the wedding ceremony, photos after and then beginning of the evening reception but I don't want him to take any photographs during the wedding breakfast. But now I'm confused, he knows these are the times I want photographs but while we are eating what will he do? Do I just expect him to buzz off to somewhere else in the hotel or do I pay for him to sit and eat with us? It's family ands close friends only so not sure this is what I want to do but what is everyone else doing? Help I feel bad

Firstly love the name of this post about starving them :) I totally didnt even think about the photographers until my mum said that we have to feed them!! lol!! Well not have to, but i suppose its nicer to include them or like Missweedles said give them money to buy something if thats an option. Were fortunate to have 2 rooms at our venue (the bar lounge and then the main room) so will seat the photographers in bar! xx

I don't mind him like grabbing some buffet food at evening and I'll buy him some drinks but the wedding breakfast is 69.50 per head and I think if I'm paying so much money for the actual photography an extra 70pound on top is a lot, especially when we had to tighten down on guests and haven't invited a few people just invited them to the night they may get offended.
    Ohhh I'm stuck

When I go to work, I take a packed lunch. My employer doesn't buy me lunch.
He is doing his job and he is getting paid for it. Ours is a friend, too, so we don't have that problem. But I would just send him an email ask what he normally does in the break and if you need to provide anything for him during this break? ie somewhere to sit...

If I were you, I would check your contract as your first point of call. If it does not state that you are required to feed them, then the choice is yours. There is not really answer correct answer for this question, it is all dependant on the couple & the photographer.

I worked with a photographer in the past, he was rather rude, he expected to be fed, the couple offered to feed me, but did not offer to feed their photographer, he even told the venue that they had forgotten a meal, & tht there should have been a meal for him. The venue clarified it with me, I was unaware of a meal being provided for him & told the venue that at this point they can either ask the couple or leave it down to the fact that i would only be unaware of an extra meal if he was trying to pull a fast one (i was the couples planner), i was aware of every meal selection, every food intolerance & every dietary requirement of everyone eating that day, so being unaware of the photographer (having seen his contract), it seemed to me he was trying to pull a fast one. The venue agreed that thats what they thought he was doing also. The couple were unaware of this until after their honeymoon when they contacted me to make sure everything went ok after the event.

it is always advisable to check your contracts with every supplier to see if they require feeding.

I don't think I actually have a contract? I have it written in email the agreed times for arrival and departure and what I would like etc etc,I also have a receipt for the deposit I've paid but that's it he said to pay him the final amount on the day. Should I have one? Or was this the agreeing times thing?

You should have a contract of some sort, yes; it should set out what services you will be receiving, and when. I would definitely be getting a copy as I've seen people not request one and run into issues later on when it comes to things like when the photos/albums are delivered, who has the rights to the photos, etc. Always wise to have a proper written contract with any big purchase just to be on the safe side.

As far as food goes: most venues will provide what's called a 'vendor meal' which will basically be something cheap and cheerful, usually around the £20 mark. Or, another option if your venue has a separate bar/restaurant is to give them vouchers to spend. In our case we're giving ours £20 each to spend on a meal during the day (which will get them a meal and drink), and then they can just eat from the buffet in the evening.

MarryingRyan: I used to think the same way you do; then I sat down and thought about it.

Our photographers are arriving at about 9am. Allowing for travel time, that means they'll probably eat breakfast around 7am.

They will then be working solidly until around 3/3.30pm, shooting the getting ready and pre-ceremony shots, the ceremony, and then doing the posed/family photos. They'll be on their feet most of that time, and lugging heavy cameras and equipment about.

They're then getting a break for part of the wedding breakfast, during which they'll grab a quick bite to eat while preparing a slide-show of images to show in the evening. They'll get some down-time in-between; about an hour.

They're then photographing our evening reception from 7.30pm until 10.30pm officially, but have said they'll keep taking picture unofficially until they leave.

Yeah, they could bring a packed lunch; but they'll be working a very physical 13 hour day, with only about a 1.5 hour break. I kind of feel the least we can do is provide them with something fresh and substantial, and with what the wedding is costing, £40 is really not that big a deal.

Now, if we were having our photographer for 4 hours, I would probably feel differently; but that's not the case.

I asked our photographer if they would like food, she told me that we're one of the only couples that had offered food and that she usually takes a pack up ! I then contacted our venue and they can make up just the main meal that we're having for the photographer with no extra charge :-) Make sure you ask their food preferences though as our photographer is a veggie ! Would've been embarrassing to serve her with a big hunk of steak haha ! xxx

A lot of venue's cater for the photographers free of charge anyway, so check with your venue, they take them away so they're out of the way as most people don't want photo's of all their guests eating anyway

We haven't planned to feed our photographer. He didn't mention it when we met and it's not in the contract. I can't remember what timings we discussed, but if we do have him stay until the first dance, which is probably the last point we'd need him (assuming we cut the cake before), I would just ensure he had sufficient break time and expect him to cater for himself. He's not a friend, he's someone we've hired to do a professional job. It would be great if any of the forum experts are photographers who could say what they would expect.

We weren't contracted to feed our photographer, but she was such a gem that we wanted her to sit down and join our guests for the wedding breakfast. We'd asked her if she would be ok with that at our pre wedding shoot, and asked about any dietary requirements.

Plus she had travelled from Middlesbrough to Hereford for us (long story) and was taking photos from 12pm- 7.30pm.
For how much we paid for our amazing photos (she was a bargain, compared to others! ), it was the least we could do x

I will not be hiring a photogpraher that expects me to feed them....that being said when I hire my photogrpapher providing we get on well and there are no issues before the wedding I will organise a small meal for them while we eat.

The way I see it though as a rule is that you are paying a photographer a hell of a lot of money. Think about it...you pay your photographer £1000 for an 8 hour day that's £120 an HOUR. granted you have to consider from that they deduct travel costs, insurance, albums, camera equipment etc...but this is all tax deductable at the end of the tax year...so they will take a majority of this home......so the people who are paying because they think that poor photographer is on their feet all day....they can afford to buy a lunch from that hefty sum you pay them.

I work 13 hour days at work and start at 8.45am. I get to my shop at around 8.20am when i have breakfast and sometimes wont get a break again until 5pm....My work doesn't pay for meals for me and I don't get to plan my day in advance either.

If a photographer is experienced they will plan ahead and have little snacks in their bag that they caneat quickly to keep them going.

The price you pay a photographer doesn't just cover the day - it covers the hours they will spend afterwards going through, sorting and touching up - weeks in some cases.

If a builder was at my house from 11am til 9pm, I would offer them something to eat...bacon butters or something of that ilk. Similarly, if I've been working at a clients I do appreciate the offer, and most clients will offer something, particularly if I'm working in a hospitality/catering environment,

I'm sure none of them would expect to join in the wedding breakfast, or have a three course meal, but a bar snack or something would be most welcome.

We offered ours food, they were very grateful but said they usually just bring their own pack ups.

For the sake of twenty quid, and to keep the person who will be in charge of such an important aspect of most weddings happy, I'd at least offer it.

    Xx

    Hi Victoria,

Thanks for thinking about me. I don’t eat during the day when I’m working, so please let Whitley Hall know that I won’t need feeding (although I’ll probably grab a sausage roll or two from your evening buffet – thanks)– I use the time when you and your guests are eating to ‘chill-out’, and check out a few things / change batteries ..etc.

    Many thanks,

He also usually uses the opportunity to talk to the staff for wedding scenes at the time too. Maybe you could just email yours to ask what he does with his breaks to decide from there xoxox

We will be providing the photographer a meal, our caterers will just give them something similar to our main but not a starter or a dessert...its best just to ask the photographer what they are planning to do. Ours said he would bring a packed lunch as our venue is a bit out of the way so he couldn't just pop out and get something but I think for the sake of an extra meal I would rather he was fed and happy, especially as he will be making up our album after the event :)
