I'm considering making my own as I make a lot of cakes anyway.. So just asking if many of you are making your own too?! I'm getting married in 2015 so a while yet, but we are just getting few ideas and planning stuff together.

If you make a lot of cakes anyway then I think it is great idea to make your own. I was considering asking my sister to make one as she is great at making cakes or the b2b of my cousin though she doesn't give any future family discounts... :S

It worked out a lot cheaper as we got told would cost us between £500 and £700 and that's going through family friends as it would off been a huge weight of my shoulders when sorting everything else out...but to save that amount of money I think I am better of making my own lol ...think I'm gonna make my own x

My MIL is making my cake. She's started the fruit cake already so it's extra alcoholic :P

My h2b's gran is making our cake. With the help of me and SiL to be to decorate it :). It's more personal and special. Plus saves a good bit of money too :) x

Great Idea, you can make your own cake with full of efforts and love.

I have toyed with the idea but I find it stressful enough making them for other people. To me it's going to be worth the extra ££'s not to have to worry about delivering it in one piece (and not having to spend forever cleaning up all the icing sugar lol). If you're doing it yourself is really recommend doing something you can make in advance, so that you're not worried about completing it the day before.

My aunty has made our wedding cake. We're having fruit cake... If my guests don't like it, tough, it's for me, not them, and most of my family do like it and I want it to keep! It's going to be so laden with booze by the time we get married... it was made 6 months ago and, as a fruit cake should be, is maturing nicely! She made one cake from the same batch for tasting, and it tastes better and better each time!... although there probably won't be much left by the time it comes to my wedding... still there are 3 tiers left and the bottom two are huge! The top one, in true tradition, we're keeping for our first born christening.
If you're making something other than fruit cake, Make sure you plan your schedule in the week leading up to your wedding carefully to allow you time to do it and not rush plus have some contingency time. Also have a backup plan, such as buying pre iced wedding cakes from M&S and having something you can easily apply to decorate it as you wish.
You will save some money doing this, but be careful you're confident you can acheive this. Cake makers are paid a lot because if they get it wrong it can almost be "disasturous", certainly it could spoil a wedding fay. You are paying for the premium of a top quality professional cake (hopefully) and it to be acheived on time and to save you the hassle. If you are making a huge cake, consider the ingredients used and how much icing, as this can be expensive too!
But go for it!
And we lived happily ever after!
