My h2b is quite shy and initially said he didn't want to do a speech so we would leave it up to our BM and my Dad. My Dad is also quite shy and has said he doesn't really want to speak in front of a crowd. I'm cool with this.

So I have written a speech and also asked my Grandad to do one, along with our BM.

Not sure if my speech is a bit boring though..... Thanking people for coming and those who have played a special part in our day....blah blah blah.

    Any tips?

Oh dear, I won't be much use as am no good at speech writing. But generally the old "short and sweet" rule is worth bearing in mind. I think a few heartfelt words thanking people for their contribution will always go down well. People will know you really appreciate it and really mean what you're saying, which is a big part of it. Plus, you're the bride, they'll have to clap like mad no matter what you say! ;)

I wrote and delivered a eulogy once, a wedding speech is an infinitely happier setting for a speech but I think some of the same rules apply. Write your speech from the heart. If something isn't heartfelt or is cliche cut it out. Sometimes it helps if you write a rough outline for the speech and then fill in the gaps. Don't just write something for filler, fill it in once you know what you want to say. Last thing keep it short, no one likes 30 min speeches.

I may just get rid of the one I've written!

Have had a card specially made for h2b with a poem it in that I have written so don't want to be too gushy in front of people.

I would like to make a speech but really don't know if I will have the nerve. H2b I'd so laid back so I may well have to make one instead of him x x

Could you google some examples of speeches just to get an idea of how they can flow. I know there ate best man books that have sections about speech writing, you should be able to use some of those tips. Mainly though write it from the heart and write as if you were talking otherwise when you come to read it out it might sound stilted.

I definitely agree with the short and sweet rule. My cousins speeches went on for ages at his wedding. The FOB started from when she was about 12 and went through the years of things that had happened (far too much!) Tbh, I would expect to say thank you to everyone and a couple of personal things to you and that's it, no need for a huge speech x x

I agree Kirsty and i shall stick to that however our bestman is 'an actor' and loves the sound of his own voice so it could be epic lol!

Definitely, keep it short and sweet.

I would maybe have one personal anecdote in there, then what it means to you to get married, then thanks to everyone and perhaps specific people who have really helped or contributed.

We were at a wedding yesterday and the speeches went on for over an hour (there were only three people talking, too!) and I just felt it was a touch to long.

    Xx

    That's what I was like! And I needed a wee, too :-/

They were good speeches, but went into far too much detail. I think we will be trying to keep all of them to around five minutes xx
