I have just spoken with a venue I'm interested in for my blessing in 2014. We were talking about entertainment options and she said they offer silent discos. Apparently it is very popular now for weddings. I did ask what is a silent disco? and she said - "You all wear headphones" Am I too old to get the concept of this. All I can find on the internet is that its used at festivals, clubs etc, but increasingly popular at weddings. I'm curious to know if anyone is having a silent disco or has ever been to one? If so what was it like?

The idea is that each individual can choose what music they dance to with hilarious results for onlookers who do not have headphones on. I've taken part at Isle of Wight festival but personally I wouldn't have it for my wedding as I don't think the older guests would be very impressed.

Oh my gooodness, have NEVER heard of this but so want to do it now! Not for a wedding tho.

So you are all going at different speeds?
lol my older guests would probably not join in unless they were drunk. I imagine the old older ones who didn't join in would be quite happy though that they could talk to each other without booming music in the room.

omg what a wierd thing i've never heard of this. it would work well with most of my guests but i'd feel it doesn't have the socialisation aspect

I know someone who had this for later on when the music had to be turned off so that people could stay on and dance.

haha such a strange choice for a wedding I think, would definitely take away from the togetherness of the occassion don't you think?

Very strange choice for a wedding, think I'll stick wiht a normal DJ, although it could be good for a house party when you dont want to upset the neighbours xx

I have been to one but would never have it at my wedding! It can be a laugh to begin with but becomes very boring very quickly! xxx

I guess like Mel said it would be good later on after a normal disco as some venues want the music turned down or off completely after a certain time, also people may have had a fair bit to drink by that time so would probably be more inclined to look daft.
Its bizarre but I think I'd love to give it a go in a club.......if I was still of a clubbing age. :-( lol

They did it on big brother one year and it was hilarious to watch ;D Wouldnt have it at my wedding tho, nobody would interact with each other would they, they'd all be off in their own little musical worlds ;)

Wedding wise I think the only way it would be really good is if its later on and maybe for around 30 - 60 minutes and all the non dancers voted on the best silent dancer with a bottle of bubbly as a prize. I think that would be fun. Not sure how practical it would be from the dj's point of view or price.

I wouldn't do it, but thats because i prefer to have music as background noise and it also prompts people to get up and dance when they hear there fav song being played

I am obviously too old lol! How would people talk to each other?People might as well bring their ipods. I can see it might be a bit funny for five mins but i don't get how it could work for any longer unless all your guests were really antisocial xxx
CommentAuthorLegoWife
I was thinking the same thing, you can't talk to anyone it'd literally be a silent disco. Doesn't sound much fun at all.

It's brilliant, I used to go to this special festival for kids who look after a parent or someone and the last two times I went they had a silent disco, its so funny and a great way to cater for different tastes, you'd have a fav song come on and you'd just go up to your mates and tell them to change the station (It works on a wireless radio frequency) and absolutely anything can be played, but the phones may mess up your do xx
CommentAuthormym72
I can't see it being very good for weddings as you might as well just tell the guests to bring their ipods/walkmans etc. A wedding is a social event and if everyone just had headphones on they might as well be at home. It's as bad as watching teenagers in the pub, not talking to each other but just sat/stood around playing with their mobile phones - so wrong lol.
CommentAuthormym72
Stevie_Dee - just read your post. You're definitely the right age to go clubbing. I'm 40 and we still go to clubs!! lol

They had a silent disco on Big Brother last night, I thought about this thread. It's definitely fun in the right circumstances, but I can't see my Nanny and Great Aunties digging it much, especially with all the tinny sounds coming from the headphones. I can't believe this is being offered for weddings but then I suppose my h2b wanted a bucking bronco so stranger things have happened.

I went to the silent disco at Kendal Calling festival and it was brilliant! So much fun, everyone looked so silly but everyone still got involved, now and then everyone would all sing a popular line of a song and move in unison, and just to mix it up, they had 2 channels to pick between. I haven't heard of them at weddings though but I think it would be a quirky idea for it! x
CommentAuthorVickie
Surely a wedding is about mixing and having a laugh with friends and family not sticking on headphones and listening to what you want.
I have not heard of this before until this thread but it seems a bit mad for a wedding. It reminds me of the cd headphones you got in woolies, lol.

doesnt sound like my idea of fun, i would be way to embarresed to stick on some head phones and dance around when everyone else around whos not dancing cant hear anything and im sure alot of people would feel the same way not to mention they would probably mess your hair up if they are the big headphones im thinking of. i think music gives an atmosphere at events and without any music i think it would be a bit dull. nice idea if there are alot of older people there who dont like loud music but not my cup of tea haha i could just imagine trying to shout to a friend on the dance floor while still having head phones on thinking no one can hear as the music is load and everyone in the room hearing every word lol x
