Ive got a wedding to go to next friday (partners uncle is getting married) and Im struggling for gift ideas. I dont want to give them money and they dont have a gift list as they have a house together so have what they want already. I have real issues about giving them cash as theyre terrible with money and H2B has had really bad rows in the past all to do with money and this uncle. I dont feel right giving them cash as a gift on their wedding day for them to waste it on crap, even though they say theyre going to take the kids on holiday to america (if you knew them you would know that this will never happen!)

Anyone got any other ideas what I can get them?

What about a gift voucher?? I think u can get gift vouchers for travel agents if that helps, that way they would have no excuse but to use it to travel and take the kids away??

It depends on whether they deliberately didn't do a gift list because they wanted money without seeming rude by asking.

If they would appreciate a gift there's a million things depending on what people they are but if they are likely to fling it in the back of a cupboard because it's unwanted you'll be wasting your money and time :(

I agree with GemmaM89 the next best thing besides cash would be gift vouchers for travel agents, or just gift vouchers for a department store, that way its not something specific they have to use it on.

If they're saying they will use the money they receive from the wedding for a holiday to America then thats what they should do, however if they havent specified about what they will use money for and you dont feel comfortable giving them money to 'waste' then either try and work out something that they'll love, that expresses their character etc or more than likely a gift voucher.

Does your partner have any idea what sort of things his Uncle likes? For example, does the Bride like shoes? Or wine? You could a characteristic wine holder, I got my cousin a shoe wine holder for her wedding as she loves shoes and drinking! Does the bride like candles? Does the groom like cars? Have you looked at those red letter packages you could get? Also depends on your budget as well...

Not sure if thats of any help xx

My budget isnt massive to be honest as we're staying at the hotel as well as paying for our own wedding, and we've got his aunties wedding 4 weeks later! I think the department store vouchers are a good idea though, might look at them.

They want to take the kids to america, its like an unrealistic dream for them? He is unemployed (well he got sacked from his last job because his mouth got him into trouble as it always does) and she is on benefits for being a stay at home mum (Which i have no problem with at all), so I can see why they want the money, but it was the attitude that went with it 'oh just give us the money it will take us to america!' Bearing in mind the kids are 4 and 3 years old too, which i think is a little young for america yet.

I can feel myself caving here and giving cash, but H2B will kill me!

Maybe you could get a "just married" teramundi money pot and they could use it to save their own pannies.

Ah ok thats understandable! whatever you get them im sure theyll understand that you also have a wedding to pay for soon let alone any other weddings to go too!! busy time for you by the sounds of it !! lots of inspiration though :p

Yeh with department stores it means that its still a varied present unlike specific store gift cards where can only spend on either clothes/chocolates/electronics etc department ones gives them a whole variety so if all of a sudden they do find they can afford to take the kids away, you've provided a gift towards new clothes / perfumes / suitcases etc!

Actually, after I came off from posting to you, I went and flicked through a bridal mag I bought earlier, and low & behold the question in the debate was to do with receiving money over gifts.... The Yes was saying that alot of people dont need gift lists now as already live together and have everything and would prefer money rahter than a gift that will end up gathering dust in the back of a cupboard... HOWEVER the No column was saying how (like you and I) dont like the idea of just money as you cant be 100% sure what it will be spent on - household bills / blowing it rather than holiday etc.
They suggest gift 'experiences' for example, if you knew that they were definitely going on holiday that you could treat them to a romantic dinner at the hotel or find out if the hotel holds any deals etc. They also suggest looking at spa treatment days or the lighter priced red letter packages etc. Otherwise things like gift cards cant fail as usually dont or have an extremely long validity and doesnt have to be used immediately, or can be put towards something else.

I know how you feel, I get like that too but the last wedding I went to was my h2b's mate who I didnt know and he just put in some money, if I had known them then I would have told him otherwise!

Or a nice photo frame to put one of their wedding photo's in? But I like the idea of the gift voucher from a travel agent.

Bit tricky really, we're asking for money towards stuff and experiences for our honeymoon, contributions to the air fare etc., but to be honest, we've budgeted to be able to afford everything ourselves, so effectively it's probably donating towards a house deposit. I'd be pretty mad if people ignored this and turned up with tea towels and toasters, we have everything we need, that's why we're not having a traditional gift list! But I like to think I'm pretty prudent with money, I understand why you're reluctant to give them money that will just get frittered away. However, after it's gifted, there's not a lot you can do about it, I mean, how many wedding presents get returned by the couples after the event? I'd probably go with department store gift vouchers, it's pretty difficult to fritter them away, and at least they're more likely to go towards something more substantial!

Btw just been flicking thru newest Argos, they've got a load of gift experience packages, inc a photographic memories one around £35. Yes it's a wedding pressi & they'll have photos but that could be something for family at later date. Also got paint balling etc, also have mega choice packs where give them a choice of 30 diff to choose from... Not as cheap but for 2 is £40.

We got a cute pair of tea mugs as a gift, they're a pair with a message that only makes sense if the mugs are side by side, maybe something simple like this would be nice?

I think department store gift vouchers would be good. Then they can't spend it on rubbish, but if they are actually going to America they can spend it on clothes etc.

I may ruffle some feathers here.... we are asking for money for our wedding presents as going towards our honeymoon spending money however if people give us department store gift cards or anything else i would be slightly miffed.... dont get me wrong i would be grateful as dont expect anything but we cant then use the department store vouchers on honeymoon?! If they wanted vouchers they would have asked for them so think its a bit rude to ignore what they are asking for.

I would maybe suggest a nice photo frame or 'bride and groom' wine glasses or something wedding related so personalised and shows you have thought about it and then give them a small amount of money so best of both worlds then xxx

Thanks for all the suggestions ladies! I know its a difficult subject, but if you knew them and knew how bad they are with money then you'd see my dilemma - they most certainly will just fritter it away on junk! Id be miffed if people bought blue tea towels and coasters etc when we had asked specifically for pink tea towels (although I never would as it wouldnt match my kitchen lol) . I quite like the idea of a photo frame and a small amount of money, or maybe one of the money jars and then a small amount with that too.

Me and my H2B wont get a honey moon as we cant afford it (hes just finished uni and is unemployed at the moment while he applies for the Royal Marines), so we are hoping for travel agent gift vouchers as a gift to put towards a honey moon, either that, or next/debs/john lewis vouchers. Gives people a choice then. But I wouldnt be miffed if people didnt stick to it and turned up with pots and pans lol.

We asked for Thomas Cook vouchers as that's who we booked our honeymoon with. Some people gave us cash which of course was great. There was one cousin who sent us a red heart shaped casserole dish. That was returned as a) it was a funny shape and b) we never make casseroles. So we got a gift voucher from the store instead. Actually, it really annoyed me as we hadn't asked for money and they'd just gone and sent this stupid casserole dish that I didn't want and would never use.

I would get a gift voucher for M&S/Debenhams/John Lewis.

Sorry MeIN but your post made me laugh! I wouldn't want a bloody casserole dish either!

Items that I would be really irritated to receive are those novelty kind of things like mr&mrs or b&g junk lol.
I know I'm ungrateful. like when it's Xmas and you get stuff with Santa on them that you can only use once a year, or even worse if they actually have the year on it and then it never comes down from the loft ever again.

Same with towels/toasters/photo frames/bed linen/ other clutter. I'd rather receive nothing because any of those items will be gracefully returned.

I wouldn't mind if someone gave me gift vouchers because if I couldn't use them, I'd just sell them.

*gets back into box of ungratefulness*

what about a wedding keepsake, there are some lovely things around such as their names the wedding date and location in a frame.
We also had the coOrdinates of Mt Kilimanjaro (our honeymoon) and the date in a lovely oak frame as a gift.
Have a look online on a website (that isn't the high street)

they have some amazing and unusual gifts and they can even giftwrap them too!!!
