Been married 3 weeks and already planning our blessing for next May. Wearing my original wedding dress isn't an option as it is somewhere in Paphos (long story but involves wine and a swimming pool). I want to go for something simply but not a wedding dress. I've been looking at prom/bridesmaids/gown style dresses. I have found 1 I like but my mother and mother in law, think that only a wedding dress would be suitable for a church blessing so now torn on what to have. Would you wear a wedding dress or a different style dress for a blessing?

well it's a church blessing, not a church wedding so I don't think you NEED to wear a wedding dress.

What dictates what a wedding dress is anyway? Does it have to be some variation of white? Does it have to have to have a full skirt? Does it have to have a train? Does it have to be full length? Some people have none of those things as their "wedding dress" but it doesn't mean it's not a wedding dress, right?

    Have what you want :)

I think the 'mums' idea of what I should wear is a long white/ivory gown with a train, like my original one.
I wasn't particularly comfortable in my wedding dress on the day as I rarely wear dresses so the thought of a big dress again with a train doesn't really interest me. The pink one above is something I think I could be happy with as its simple but pretty.

I think if this can be classed as a wedding dress you can have whatever dress you want hun. Its your blessing and as much as parents
input can be nice in the end the decision is yours!

Funny you should say that I was thinking along the same lines. Steve always gets invites to balls and garden partys which he can't turn down (some can be very drab) but I always feel I have to make an effort, so I think this would be quite nice as a ball gown too. xx

My FMIL just got her blessing a few months back and she didn't where he wedding dress, she just wore a short white dress that she got on the high street (was rather short).
I personally, if I was getting blessed after I was married would where something similar, like a long prom/bridesmaid dress rather than a wedding dress, this is only because I wouldn't see it as my wedding day.

They have seen it individually and both replied along the same lines of, its pretty but not for a church blessing, which I think is weird as its mainly a service to bless our marriage not the actual thing. Saying that I would wear this dress as a bride if it was a marriage ceremony.
Its good to have everyone's opinion as I thought I may have been going about the blessing the wrong way. I think it may be more a case of fussy mums.

Saying all this and what I posted a few mins ago ............I did go to a "wedding" and reception here. The bride and groom had already got married about a year earlier, had a registry office ceremony, but they decided to do a blessing in church and had a massive wedding reception and she wore the big wedding dress for the day. It could work.

I do agree though and still think that a nice cocktail/ball gown type dress will be really nice for a blessing :D

We have just been to my H2B's Auntys, 25th Anniversary blessing. They also had a 10th. For the 10th she wore another wedding dress (although I can understand a year after the desire to wear a wedding dress again may not be as strong as in 10 years time) but this time she just wore a lovely purple dress, and this was in a catholic church. The dress you chose will look lovely, and in terms of religious grounds, the different parts of a wedding dress, i.e. the colour and covering of the body etc are all supposed to represent virginity and innocence, something which isn't really relevent a year after getting married, so I should think it would be fine. It's a beautiful dress. xx

I love the dress you've shown and don't think it's unsuitable at all. It's elegant and modest, and if you're going to be comfortable in it on the day then I'd say go for it :) Intrigued as to what happened to your original, that sounds like a story and a half! ;-)

I had actually got changed out of my wedding dress earlier on in the evening so I could dance at the reception. After it was all over we went back to our villa with a few close friends and we sat around our pool drinking wine and listening to music. As you can imagine we were all a bit tipsy and it was the wee hours of the morning. My brother suggested Steve and I do a last dance together, but Steve (and the best man were no where to be found). I didn't know at the time but the men had planned a surprise. A few minutes later Steve walked out onto the patio wearing my wedding dress, my bouquet and dodgy make up. The best man was behind him trying to hold up the train.
I was laughing so hard I didn't exactly see what followed. Next second, still not sure if his best man pushed him or tripped over the train and fell into him, but Steve went head first into the pool. All I saw was a mass of chiffon go diving into the pool and thought he had done it on purpose. Luckily it was the shallow end. He couldn't get out of the pool as with the weight of the dress he couldn't climb the tiny pool ladders. It was so comical watching him make several attempts at the ladder and then trying to hoist a leg out at the side of pool, in this mass of wet ivory material and then fall back in. We were all stood around the pool for several minutes unable to help for laughing so hard. In the end after many attempts at getting out the best man got in and unlaced him out of it. (still waiting for that pic off my sister in law). Luckily my bouquet didn't go in so I'm keeping that forever, as all I can picture now is it flying through the air.
The morning after we gave the dress to my uncles girlfriend (they live in Cyprus). She makes costumes for children's play and told her if she can salvage it she can use it.
My mum and Steve's mum don't know anything about what happened to it as they thought it was beautiful and something to treasure forever (it wasn't a fortune it was £108) and they think I have it stored away now at home. Ahem

lol I can just imagine him trying to get out the pool... Yeah might be best your mums don't know what happened to it. But even if they did find out nothing much they could do other than laugh it off as its too late to do anything about it now... You'll hve to get that picture, and also find out how many kids your wedding dress is on xx

Tbh I felt uncomfortable in the dress all day and couldn't wait to get into a more 'me' kind of dress. I'm not really a dress person. Steve knew I was never going to wear it again and was thinking of giving it away to charity or something so it was his attempt at putting some humour and fond memories into the dress. He's still a bit miffed as his plan was to do a last dance with me. lol

Well as you cant wear the one you had after the pool incident, i think the other one you have picked is lovely and wont look out of place in a church, you will have to think of a good reason why your not wearing your original dress though, we are having a blessing later and im just having my dress shortened for that xx
